If this is a deal for depth purposes and they are still going after Burnes or another healthy pitcher who is good via FA or trade, I like this signing. If they’re signing ANOTHER guy coming off a major injury and expected him to make a big impact, I’m not a huge fan, at least for the 2025 season. The contract could be a bargain in 2026.

I was going to type my disgust, but my pride as a fan will be on the IL until mid-summer, when I'll really be disgusted.

Well, as far as Sandovals go, this is actually a bargain for Boston. The Red Sox are only paying Patrick $18 million not to pitch for them. Remember, they chose to pay Pablo $48 million not to play for them for three years.

Exactly. This is another dumpster dive. Their needs haven't changed a bit with this signing: at least one more very good hitting RH bat (read: Hernandez)  and at least one more high quality SP (Burnes would be fine).

Get out your purse Henry-or sell the team!

It does seem a tad ironic that they're so into these pitcher reclamation projects, but gave up on the 2024 NL Cy Young winner.

Cut Brez some slacker.

Patrick is under 30, a veteran of teams that stink, and just two years ago led the AL in shutout (1).

And on bb-ref, two of his Most Similar Pitchers are Boggs and Kingman (tommy, brian).

When they moved Sale, I understood that they had simply been too frustrated with his constant injuries.  But lately it seems like thats all they want.  Even Crochet has had one TJ.

I suppose this bodes well for anyone eyeing Walker Buehler.  Unless the Sox think he isn’t injured enough yet.

To be fair, Sandoval was signed by one GM, released by another, and should have never been in Boston in the first place…

No one knows if Patrick will be any good when/if he comes back from Tommy John this season, but my favorite part of this contract is that the Red Sox will be paying him over twice as much in 2026, no matter what.

Actually 3.5 times as much.

Sandoval is a Sox Type 2 signing.

Type 1: Add or extend a pitcher with a long or recent history of injuries: Sale, Nate, Whitlock, Richards, Kluber, Hill & Wacha

Type 2: Add a pitcher you know is out for a few months, hope they come back at the end of year one but always ends up being year two, if that: Paxton, Hendriks & Fulmer

Type 3: Add pitchers who seem to have no major injury history, but once they join the Sox, BAM! Thornburg & Giolito

I'm sure I forgot someone.

It was revealed that Patrick Sandoval had the internal brace surgery and not the full TJS. That makes it more likely he returns, this year. He was surprised the SFG non tendered him, as he had 2 arb years left, where maybe he'd get $12-15M, and not what he got as a FA.

Here is the story...

Getting non tendered by the Giants must have been surprising indeed.  Turns out it was a clerical error, they had him mixed up with Pablo. 😉

Actually I had to look it up myself to confirm that Patrick's entire career has been with the Angels.

No wonder SF didn't tender him this offseason!

Sox didn’t sign Thornburg; they traded Travis Shaw for him…

Alas, if moon's first sentence said addition instead of signing, 'twould be a perfect post.

They also included Dubon in that trade. Dubon now has more bWAR post trade than Shaw.

If it was perfect, he'd have included Carson Smith in his post.

Yes, I meant to write "additions," and I missed some, of course.

Sandoval was a real good pitcher and is not old. I had to look it up to confirm he will still be just 28, through the season. I've mentioned I'm sick and tired of these deals, and I'd rather we spent on Scott than Sandoval, but Patrick did have a 122 ERA+ from 2021-2023 with an FIP of 3,72, not bad for a guy with a 4.0 BB/9.

As a reference, here are some other ERA+/FIP over their last 3 years:

125/2.90 Crochet

121/3.79 Buehler

117/3.66 Houck

109/3.71 Whitlock

99/4.14 Bello

97/4.31 Crawford

96/4.39 Giolito

It's very plausible that Crochet and Buehler become our #1 and #2,

DD always seem to have a few other guys thrown into every trade.  It's like the man was allergic to trading for a player with anything short of handing over at least 3 guys.

Buehler's best year was the best of them all. Best fWAR seasons since 2017 in MLB by rank:

28. Buehler 5.6 in '21

44. Giolito 5.2 in '19

48. Buehler 5.1 in '19

64. Crochet 4.7 in '24

95. Giolito 4.1 in '21

125. Houck 3.9 in '24

145. Sandoval 3.7 in  '22

222. Buehler 3.1 in '18

We have 5 SP'ers who have had a 3.1 or better fWAR season. Buehler 3 times and Gio twice. (Gio might have been 3 times, if you project 2020 to a full season.)

Other good seasons

2.0 Giolito '20 (short season)

2.4 Crawford '23

2.3 Sandoval '23, Houck in '21

2.0 Bello '24,

We have 7 SP'ers who have had a 2.0 or better fWAR season since 2021, or the last 4 seasons. None are post prime. None are dealing with a current injury, except Sandoval.

I went back 8 years, since none of our guys are past prime enough to think it impossible to repeat a season completed at a younger age. (Past injury might have made it near impossible to do so.)

Dubon would have been useful over the past few years at 2B. They probably could have got the deal done with a lesser prospect. DD just didn't really care and wanted Thornburg.

I'm surprised Dubon still has one arb year left. That trade seems so long ago,

It's what happens when you trade a guy with options a year ahead of the Rule 5 draft. He's been gone since 2017! He's bounced around a little, but has found success in HOU.
