A Cy Young winner would help, for sure.

Mind you these Sox are doing their utmost to make even the loss of one a non-factor as far as making or missing the playoffs.

If a butterfly farts in China...

Knowing our luck, Sale would have stumbled on a pebble on Fenway's mound and missed 25 starts.

"We all just have to be better at our jobs," said Fenway's head groundskeeper.

"We had some interest in hiring a top geologist to take care of the pebble problem... but such a move had to make sense.

"Instead we've pivoted to one of those used landscaper suck-trucks we found on eBay -- with the big vacuum hose for clearing leaf piles off lawns in the Fall...

"... it's in the shop right now, but we're told it should be ready by next trade deadline... after a sufficient rehab assignment at a pickleball court."

There is no way Mayer is winning the job out of ST without playing AAA. At the very least, they are super two-ing him. C'mon man!

Or he’ll be gone.

Marcelo Mayer and Wilyer Abreu (total - 94.1) for Tarik Skubal (95.1)

Thats actually a good haul for Detroit, although they may insist on a pitcher.  If necessary, iI’d add one in - almost any one…

Give them Fitts and Wikelman.

Either Fitts (4.3) or Wikelman (2.7) still works on BTV.  I’d happily give up either.  I’d begrudgingly give up both, but I’d still do it…

i'd do that in a second.

Skubal has 2 years of team control. That is what worries me most about trading 5-6 years of Mayer and 4-5 of Abreu, but Skubal looks like the real deal, and maybe we could extend him.

If we do nothing else to improve the "2 year window" of Skubal, I'd think hard about saying no.

Sign Burnes AND trade for Skubal, and I'm 100% behind this trade suggestion.

Sign some other top 4-5 FA SP'er with Skubal, and I'm fine with it.

Call Campbell up to the 40 and 26, and pray Story stays healthy.

Wikelman is garbo. I'm giving him up just to get him off the 40 man.

How soon until Campbell is a better prospect than Mayer? Is he the 2b of the future anyway?

What if Romero is the future SS for the BoSox? Is he a top 100 guy at some point next year?

Nobody's giving up an ace starting pitcher for an injury-prone prospect who hasn't even played in the majors yet.

The best the Sox may get for Mayer is a Larry Andersen-type pitcher -- except there are no other Andersens available with a second e in their last names. They can probably get Shaun Anderson -- with an o -- a 29-year old pitcher from the Marlins with a career -1.7 WAR; at least he's a big leaguer (sometimes).

Facetiously, if Boston is going to trade a top prospect this winter, we all know it will be Kristian Campbell. He bats righty, has no set position, his swing is unnatural, and most importantly -- no one in the Red Sox org ever hyped him as part of the future core that will save! this! franchise!

Hey, no one said you have to play for a franchise to save it.

You mentioned Larry Andersen - once called the “most important player in Astros history.”  I doubt it was because he wracked up 7.8 bWAR in his 5 seasons there.

Mikey Romero will crack the top 100 next year.  Book it…

I could see them trading Campbell, but it doesn’t work on BTV right now like Mayer does.

And it never will.  With no set position, Campbell is unlikely to project any dWAR numbers that help his surplus value…

Makes it sort of unlikely Detroit wants him for their only pitching prospect that actually worked out…

Maybe if you want Matt Manning or Casey Mize…

I'm a little worried that Campbell may be better suited for the OF, but if the guy can hit, I'm okay with an average or slightly below average defender at 2B, at least for a while.

I was mostly against the idea of trading Mayer, and I'm not so sure his trade value is all that high, due to so many injury concerns, but I'm really liking Campbell more and more.

Yes, with Romero (and later Arias) in the pipeline, we may only need Campbell to play 2B for 1-2 years. (Maybe Meidroth could win the 2B job, someday. This also begs the question, who goes in the OF, if Campbell moves there? (Campbell to DH/4th OF in 2 years?)

Rotowire has him ranked as #9 overall. 🤗

That's why they are getting Fitts, Mayer and Abreu.

Crazy thought here - but a fantasy website like Rotoworld MIGHT NOT CARE about defense…

I think Detroit demands Anthony and tries to grab another top 4 prospect with him, but for just 2 years of control, I would not give into that demand.

Trading Anthony also means we don't trade Abreu, so who is the second best player traded with Anthony? DHam? LOL. Montgomery, Arias, Cespedes and Bleis are too far away to have great trade value. Perales is hurt. Meidroth, Sandlin & Fitts combined might not be enough to sweeten the Anthony package enough for DET to say yes.

I know. You mentioning the dWAR issue just made me think of the Rotoworld ranking and how it overinflates his value.

Agreed.  You call Greenburg.  I’ll call Breslow.

He’ll probably be a very valuable fantasy asset someday.  Especially if he never gets a set position and has multiple eligibilities

We don't know, if he will be bad on defense, so maybe someday, he shows he can and his value jumps over Mayer's.

If Mayer is traded, who cares? He'll play for us. Romero & maybe Arias will be ready when Story's time is up.
