For sure. If I was relatively near .500 and had hopes for next year, I'd consider claiming him.

Like the Cubs…

No, approx 3M this year (whatever is remaining) and full 12M next year.

How about Yoshida for Taylor? No money added.

Yoshida has a .847 OPS since April 16.  He’s showing us he can hit.  Why are oeople trying to offload him?

Because he got off to a slow start.

Not with me.

I'd like to use the savings to spend on pitching and think we can get an .850 OPS with an Abreu-Ref platoon at DH in 2025, so no drop off. (Anthony in RF.) Abreu would also make for a solid 4th OF option.

Spend his $18mill on pitching?  So another Giolito?

Hopefully we add the "savings" to the existing winter budget and do better.

Better luck might help, too.

I've heard that gag before!

I get the line of thinking by some to offload some money.  But I’m tired of curtailing my wishlist to the mindset of a mid market team.  This is Boston, not Cleveland.  I think we need to either trade prospect capital for an Ace, or buy one this winter.  Preferably both.

yoshida is fine, he keeps hitting he might be very tradeable by the next deadline when the outfield gets very tight.  (Hopefully)

Add.  Even if you could decipher the Sox budget from the last few years, on paper, they have the money to spend on pitching this offseason with seemingly no other holes.

are they going to spend $60 million on a catcher? A SS? A 1B? Or a CFer?  No need to, go get some pitching.

I have my own budget.  I can spend it on some tickets and a jersey, or I can go out and buy a nice new whiney pitch fork.

balls in your court Mr. Henry

Yes, indeed.

However, if go by the idea that JH is setting a firm winter spending budget, I would think any money Brez saves would/should be added to the net balance.

(I don't think they did with Sale, since they ended up spending less in '24 than '23, but maybe that was part of what Brez had to work with on day one.

There's never really been anything wrong with a dedicated DH.  If Yoshida can post an .825 OPS or thereabouts, he's probably worth the $18 million.

I don't like to have to always keep an eye on the budget, whenever suggesting moves to improve the team. I agree, we should not have to be this restrictive, but facts are facts.

Of course, if JH is going to pocket the "saving" we might get by trading Yoshida for someone like Taylor, then I'm firmly against the idea.

If Brez is handed a budget and told, if he cuts here, and can spend that much there, then I'm looking at ways to improve pitching without taking a big bite out of the O.

If we can replace Yoshida's bat with Anthony or Campbell, and play Abreu-Ref at DH and 4th OF, there is a chance the O improves or stays even.

Brez is going to have to connect on his winter moves. No more Gios.

He'll have to do better on his deadline deals, if he doesn't, and again, no more Paxton Sims & Garcias.

He did well with O'Neall and Criswell, and maybe the Dugo trade, but we need a real good success rate, especially if JH if tight-fisted, again.

Best chance for the Sox is to have a healthy Devers raking. That's obvious, because...

.... what do the three AL Central teams destined to make the playoffs have in common with the Red Sox: all have decent starters, offenses led by a few stars, and a good closer (except for the Royals).

The difference is that Cleveland, Minny and KC all get to play the White Sox more than Boston does -- so the Red Sox need to be better than their nearest comp to make the postseason. Problem is, they're not right now...

... but can they be in September? Is there anyone they can call up who could make an impact that might mean three or four more wins???

Hopefully Craig used up a lot of his bad luck this year.  Yikes!

Can't believe his very first first-round pick broke his ankle -- before the draft!

This franchise has really acquired too much of a taste for acquiring damaged and distressed assets.

They do get the White Sox for 3 more games.  KC and Minny are both done with them.  Hopefully those are the Sox 3 needed wins.  Might be easier if the AAA Sox shut down Crochet for the season by that time…

If only Boston had traded for Crochet a month, he'd be done by now.

Only when the unloaded asset performs elsewhere.  We are very fair and consistent on that point. 😎

Great pitching is tough to come by. I don't see a Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens clone out there. A guy who will go deep in games and you feel pretty sure will get a W.  Do you really want to go all in for a simply good pitcher like Corbin Burnes ?

So the Sox should dial back the search for pitching until a future Hall of Famer hits the market?
