But he's way cheaper than Xander would have been. Who cares whether he actually plays or not?

All that matters is JH saved a few bucks.

Xander is already off shortstop…

Obviously you never want anyone to get hurt....

Another non performing contract. Not Henry's fault Bloom signed him.

You were never going to get another team friendly contract from Xander.

Pass on Xander's new deal.

That’s also in large part due to Padres having arguably the best fielding SS in the MLB also on the roster

Xander would be better at SS than anyone on the current roster after Story.

Obviously his contract is atrocious but if FO would have dealt his situation better he could have been here for cheaper but won't go there again as we have beaten the dead horse on this already

You mean the guy they moved to 2B, after signing Bogey?

$140M is a lot of money to spend on repairs, and maintenance for Story Land to be only open for a short time each year.

Story Land is closed all summer for repairs. The moose out front should have told you.

Wishful thinking but maybe the Sox can get Xander back on a trade where Dan Diego would eat some of that contract. Like 100 off haha

They'd still need to find a SS though.

Aren’t the Padres having contract issues and that was part of the reason they dealt Soto and couldn’t afford Snell? I doubt they’d eat part of his deal to get rid of him.

The Padres didn’t move Xander off short because they acquired ARod. They moved Kim off short to second to accommodate Xander. And then after one year, they put Kim back at shortstop and moved Xander to 2b. What does that tell you?

Teams do eat parts of contracts to move players. In Bogaerts case, that $100mill is really just over a third of the whole deal and they’d save a ton of money. Of course they would want something cheap and good on return…

Well, to be fair, the Red Sox could use a 2B also..

I'm not buying the Red Sox defense suddenly sucks as a team at all other positions because they lost their best glove at shortstop.

I'm not buying that the Red Sox defense still sucks because their manager can't wave a magic wand and force professionals to be better at catching and throwing.

I'm not buying tickets, hot dogs, beer and t-shirts at Fenway Park this year -- because Breslow's not buying major league talent -- because Henry's not buying major league talent.

The Red Sox get what I'm not paying for.

We have one. And while he is injured, he’s only out for the month, not the year…

Grissom has NOT proven he can be a regular quality 2B yet

He hasn't proven it yet, but he's a better option than Reyes/Valdez. That's how dire the situation is at 2B.

Posted

I think Grissom will be fine at 2B. It might take until 2025 to realize it, but I have a lot of confidence in him. He should be average or better on D and a plus on O, soon.

At SS, he would need to show he is better than he looked in his SSS MLB career, to date. (Better than DHam/Reyes might not be a very high bar.)

So what? Neither has Valdez. But the difference is, Valdez has had the opportunity.

Grissom has very little to prove as a hitter, posting a 105 OPS+ in MLB in limited action. He also posted a .921 OPS in AAA. Valdez, in a similar sample size, has posted an 83 OPS+ in MLB and a .834 OPS in AAA.

Defensively, while Grissom is an unknown, Valdez has set the bar pretty low, considering he could not catch a cold if he was naked in Norway. There is an extremely good chance that, while he may never be an all Star, Grissom is a big step up over the current situation...

I'm really sad for the Story situation from the human side of the equation. I followed him closely during the offseason and ST. Hated the contract, but dude put his heart and soul into being productive for this team in 2024 and look at what happened. It's a freak injury to boot.

I'm not so sure the 236 PAs in MLB by Grissom has "proved" he can hit well enough to be a plus, but that part of his game does look promising. His OPS+ in 2023 was 78, so maybe he needs to adjust to the adjustment pitchers made with him after 2022.

E Valdez has actually had LESS opportunity than Grissom, in the bigs. (187 PAs and an 83 OPS+)

I think we can safely bet on Grissom being the better defender. The hitting aspect might need to be determined on who will be better.

I like Grissom, but his sample size is too small to know anything, for sure- same with Valdez.

I was really excited about watching his defense, this year. I also felt his hitting would improve to the plus side, over the season. This sucks for us fans, but it must be killing him, inside.
