A classic lesson in how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. This is why 78-84 may be a reach in 2024

It may end up being a certainty.

He had last night off.

You are correct, he only saved the opener, so belatedly in much agreement with you.

So he brings in Joely Rodriguez, a bum, and warms up a guy with a career 5 ERA in the minors to replace Joely, and then decides to pitch to one of the best players on the planet with a base open?

Absolute master class of stupidity

idgaf what anyone says. This loss is on Cora.

I didn't like Cora when he was a player, less as a manager.

Hopefully, Cora will be gone after this season. Why he's considered a great manager by so many, I've never figured that out.

And why the actual f*** is Bernardino in the minors but JOELY RODRIGUEZ ON THE TEAM??!?

Rodriguez is 32 and for his career has a nearly 5 ERA and a negative WAR…

That f-up was also Cora's decision.

At least the BRUINS won tonight. 101 points for a team that, before the season started, wasn't even picked to make the PO's.

The SOX were also picked not to make the PO's and they won't. Having an idiot like Cora as manager seals the deal.

Just because Joely is a lefty doesn't mean he's good.

He isn’t good at anything. He was horrendous last year and he for some reason essentially got guaranteed a roster spot? WHY?

The reason this one hurts more is because the Sox finally got multiple clutch hits in an inning - Pablo, Reese, Masa - then still blew it.

Cora had a base open with JRod up, but didn't want to force Slaten to face his first MLB batter with the sacks drunk. Abreu bad e, but looks overmatched at this level (pulling his head on every swing = not actually seeing many pitches).

Can't blame it all on Joely, with Raley standing there with only a batgrip in his hand when his hit blooped just fair. Then he hustles to score the tying run with the infield in and Reyes throwing home; doubtful Pedroia could make a better peg. However, Bernardino deserved to make the club -- and a crap team doesn't get to use options as an excuse... here's an option: keep your best players in the majors.

And forget about getting any prospect of value now in a trade for Jansen. It's obvious to the industry he's too old to avoid pulling muscles just waking up.

i don't give a gotdamn if Joely is a lefty or not. dude sucks ass. f*** him. nothing but s*** from him every f***ing time he gets in a game. and f*** Cora for not using Jansen instead. paying him $16 million to sit on the bench while this POS gets in the game. damn. now i see Jansen has a "stiff back". yeah, probably from sitting on ass all spring. Even if Jansen is unavailable, that would mean Martin is the closer now, correct? Why use him in 8th inning of a tied game?

To keep the game tied?

Keeping it tied becomes pretty irrelevant if you are going to rely on Joely Rodriguez and Justin Slaten to protect a lead.

But overall, this team has a lot of issues. There are multiple players who probably shouldn’t be in MLB rosters on this team. Pivetta and Crawford combined to allow 2 runs in 13 innings and Red Sox went 0-2. The Red Sox two best relievers are turning 37 and 38 and both are already battling injuries.

This could be a long season.

Cora lost the game last night. His fascination to put his worst arm in high leverage situations continuous. Also, this staff is already thin with zero depth (plus Devers unavailable) and you sit O’Neill who is kind of hot “to rest him” and put Abreu instead who sucks in the OF in the 3rd game of the season is simply ridiculous to say the least.

Last night reflects your 2024 Boston Red Sox Baseball moving forward. Thin and limited staff and poor management.

Baseball can be random.

Luke Raley ignited the Seattle comeback with the broken-bat bloop single that barely stayed fair.

Luis Urias followed with the hardest-hit ball of the night, lining out sharply to second baseman Enmanuel Valdez.

exactly. If those other guys are going to spit the bit, let them do it earlier so you don’t have to burn Martin.

If Joely and Slaten suck, that's on the front office, IMHO. Brernardino probably should have gotten the nod over Joely. Not sure what Joely has done to impress them. In ST games he gave up 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

I don’t believe in burning your best available BP guy to turn the ball over to slugs. That is why the best BP guy is your closer.
