Talks break down all the time, I just view contract extensions a little differently. There's no team out there bidding against us, and it's not like he has years of success under his belt and more of an incentive to pitch good for 1-2 more years to bet on himself. This is the time to get it done.

If I was a guessing man, I'd guess the framework of an extension is predominately agreed upon between the two sides but they are hammering out the years. 5 years and then what? an option year or two? I'd really like to see some option years at the end of an extension that only buys out ONE of his FA years.

I think these kinds of talks break down enough to think this is not a slam dunk signing.

Talks with players with several years of control are more likely to reach a deal than with vets with 2-3+ years of control, for sure.

Players are seeking security, in case they get hurt or turn out to be not as good as many expected. Teams get added years of control at reasonable prices. It's set up to be win-win. I get it.

Yeah, I think the ideal scenario is to lock in one more year, plus a team option for a second year.

Just some fluff to try and counter the bad news on Gio.

I doubt we extend Bello or Casas, this year.

I read that the only hold up on Bello is a routine physical and that the terms have been agreed upon PER AN INDUSTRY SOURCE.

Apparently it’s 5 year deal and it’s done, conflicting reports about being announced this weekend or within the next few hours.

Assuming it starts after this season they gain ONE year of control? They really don’t wanna sign any pitchers into their 30’s so they? I hope there’s a few option years attached.

Why 5 years? That doesn't buy out any FA years.

2 additional years of Bello would be ideal.

Do you agree or disagree with my ideal scenario?

ARB years plus 2 years of control after is ideal. Agree.

@bradfo

Triston Casas said he has not re-engaged in extension talks with the Red Sox as of yet. “I don’t know if they’re trying to finalize (Bello), but there have really been no talks, no developments, whatsoever”

Hmmm...first "nothing enticing", now this. Next thing you know we'll have Casas being cast as disenchanted with the organization...

Trade bait! We already have CJ Cron!

For what it's worth regarding Casas, here's BTV's guide to what they think an extension should look like.

Triston Casas: 8 years, $92 million ($11.5M AAV, through age 31)

Casas is another player who displayed lots of talent during his rookie campaign last year, producing 1.7 fWAR and hitting .263 with 24 home runs. For an extension to make sense for the Red Sox, however, he’ll have to make some large strides in the field, as he was one of the worst defensive first basemen in baseball. One option Boston may explore longer-term could be a move to DH. Defensive questions aside, an extension could still make sense if Boston believes Casas will continue to elevate his offensive game.

Sounds great, to me, even at $95M/8. Add a 9th year option at $25M with a $5M buyout, making it $100M/8.

That's BTV's value though. Why pay him 11.5 AAV now when he's not getting that in ARB until year 3 at least?

So you get the more back-end post control years.

Right-hander Brayan Bello and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a six-year, $55 million contract extension that includes a seventh-year club option for $21 million, sources tell ESPN.

The Sox lock up the 24-year-old into the 2030s

They gotta extend Casas at all costs...

@BOSSportsGordo

Triston Casas was talking on the broadcast about his big breakfast and pregame protein shake, and says he feels light before the game.

@karlravechespn: “What about that makes you feel light?”

Casas: “The trip to the bathroom right before the game.”

:D

Tanner Houck told @bradfo that he has talked to the Red Sox about an extension, though nothing is imminent.

Someday the sun will implode.

Houck's extension would obviously be pretty small. We'll see.

Maybe Crag is more forward thinking than Bloom.

Ten games in and the Sox are playing .700 ball. Dismiss ST all you want, but the only teams with less losses are the Orioles and Dodgers -- expected contenders.

Starting pitchers all look at least decent, especially vs. minor league bats. Pitchers are always ahead of hitters early, but any sample size helps when searching for shreds of hope. Besides Devers, the Sox have zero home runs from their projected roster (which has barely played part-time, so far).

Defense looks "normal" with a big league shortstop and centerfielder. Really hoping they go west with Rafaela and his righty bat. Really don't like Story hitting third; as much as he's legit with the glove, his swing-and-miss is also legit (and has nothing to do with injuries). If either Ceddanne or Grissom can take off and spark rallies, there may be a scenario where Devers and Casas bat 2-3...

@tylermilliken_

Red Sox lose to the Braves 3-2 at JetBlue Park. Now 8-6-1 this spring.

.250 record since the 5GG curse.

His on-field interview on the Sunday night game last year made me a fan (I believe that's where a dumb-ass interviewer asked about his mother, who was dead!). But this confirms my support!

Abreau starting to come to life as rafeala eyes a return to Worcester

I think Rafeal would be eyeing a spot on the big league roster. Not too sure many athletes are gunning for a spot on the minor league team.
