Breslow said this weekend a big part of the build-out will be drafting pitchers -- who usually take about five years to make the majors and establish themselves as big leaguers.

That's basically an admission the Red Sox will be wasting Devers' prime; he's only signed for 10 more years...

maybe we should have been drafting some pitchers over the past several years instead of a zillion SS

Many of us have been running up the white flag for awhile now. Anything is better than nothing. Not signing anyone who is remotely serviceable such as Paxton just seems like a continuation of a nothingness campaign. I'll take it all back if a signing or two takes place to sort of indicate that they really do give a s*** about this year's team. Sadly, and I freely admit, I really am losing interest in them daily. I hardly know the names of these guys anymore.

yep. why learn any of the names when they're going to DFA half of them before the season is over anyway. they're just throwing s*** at the wall hoping that something sticks.

but there will be 1 or 2 low end starters brought in on M/L deals to provide "depth"

I saw a guy like Paxton as a possibility, and we can't even get him.

I would prefer an innings eater over Paxton, but I figured a guy like him is maybe the best we could hope for.

NOPE!

If they fail to add a legit starting pitcher, somebody in that front office (my vote goes to Sham), needs to be publicly horsewhipped. The Sox can sell tickets to it and livestream it and make some money off it, so it'll be a win-win for everyone.

This will really go beyond absurd, if we fail to land a decent SP, and I'm just talking James Paxton level at the minimum, and now he's gone..

There are whispers out there that the Sox are still in on Montgomery. Unfortunately there are much louder voices saying there's no chance of us actually signing him because he's too expensive.

As slow as the Sox have been, they are right there with the rest of the league (except the Dodgers). There are still 27 starting pitchers listed on MLBTR. Granted, they still list Paxton but they don’t list Trevor Bauer.

You could still make a very competitive rotation with these remaining arms.

This is why missing out on Paxton just won’t bother me. Heck I’m more upset about missing out on Aroldis Chapman…

"Right there with the rest of the league" says a lot to me. SAD

Woe is me. Sham, sham, sham! Maybe the Red Sox should just sit out this year since most everyone has them dead, and buried anyway.

Time will tell on Bloom's legacy, but if I was going to grade his drafts right now:

'20 - B- short draft but overall the talent acquired was decent

'21 - C+ aside from Mayer, the class is a little rough especially at the top

'22 - C- aside from Anthony, the class is very rough missing on the 1st and 2nd pick

'23 - B- Teel seems really good, unsure about the rest of the class right now

Are those whispers you think you hear just in your head, because JH probably has earplugs in.

The draft is not the problem. Stop beating that drum.

Not sure why the Sox (and numerous other teams) not spending heavily in free agency is some sort of tragedy…

Isn't that how some cooks see if spaghetti is ready? Sox marketing 101: whatever crap sticks, pour some hot sauce over it, and sell it -- dumb fans will lap it right up.

They did draft Ball, and Groome, but neither worked out.

Of course you would think that way. You cheer for the owners' wallets.

A member of the most inciteful Red Sox forum on the net has to be reminded that the best players always play short -- which means they can play anywhere!

And the average throw from SS to 1B is twice the distance from the mound to home plate.

So the big question is: why hasn't Breslow brought in an expert at converting shortstops to starting pitcher by now?

Tom Thumbuphisarse said he meant they were going to "press all levers." PRESS this.

tragedy? really? what the Red Sox choose to do or not do is somewhat shy of a tragedy. Their choosing to not sign players that they desperately need if in fact they have the money is just stupid not tragic. Maybe they don't have the money that we think they do. If that's the case I'll tip my hat to their worthy efforts to make us competitive to date. Pedro talked about the culture that once defined the Boston Red Sox. It's gone. Sadly gone.

Take it easy. Some people crack jokes to deal with their helplessness. Others enjoy arguing -- even if they've advocated for months for big money free agent signings or trades for actually talented ballplayers.

Ultimately, these Red Sox are all big leaguers, and if we chose to, we can watch or even attend big league games to cheer for them.

They may change the color of their shirts, or get tattoos we feel mar their appearance... but in the end, they're our Red Sox, and we'll still love them.

The owners and front office are counting on us.

I get that. I also think that you d maybe we value these players more than they do and press for immediacy.

Both Snell and Montgomery would be upgraded. But does it make sense to go all in for these guys or maybe wait a year and go all in for Corbin Burnes or Walker Buehler or Brandon Woodruff or Shane Bieber or Max Fried? That’s part of the agenda that we don’t know about but I can’t pretend doesn’t exist.

And despite the lack of action this year, pitchers like Snell, Montgomery, Bauer, Clevinger, and Mike Lorenzen are all still out there so other teams aren’t grabbing any of them either. There are three Cy Young awards still looking for jobs!

It’s not as early as it used to be, but with so many pitchers still available, it’s not over yet…

Seems fair.

Now, grade the IFA signings, each year.

How about the trades for prospects and the Rulle 5 additions and subtractions?

Grissom

Campbell, Weissert & Fitts

Abreu & EValdez

Wink and Gambrell

DHam & Binelas

Whitlock (Rule 5)

I won't ask about Wong.

I see what you did there, Moon -- blending Bloom and Breslow acquisitions, to reflect the overlap... as if no real changes have been made at the top of the org! Nice work...

I like Bauer and Clevinger despite their off-field issues.

I agree in baseball terms, but I don't think the Sox need another PR disaster right now.

We're in the BroomSlow Era.

I did add some Brez trades, and also grading his IFA signings, so far.

While I do think there has been little change in the top FO philosophy since the start of 2019, I am hopeful Brez can and will do better than Bloom under the same circumstances.

It's scary to think he has not been given Bloom's winter budgets of '21, '22 or '23.

This is almost as bad as Bloom's first winter before 2020, in terms of little new spending.

The loss of Betts, Price and Porcello vs JT, Duvall, Paxton, Sale and others is not the same, however, but barely replacing them is, so far.

There's been absolutely nothing since the little flurry of signing Giolito and trading Sale.

While spending more on Gio than anything Bloom did, year one, Bloom lost more from the previous season (Betts, Price & Porcello.) so it seems eerily similar, to me.

One thing I see with this ownership group is that they're pussies, always shying away from controversial players.

I guess I’m as not all up in arms, because not much has been done transition wise, because i didn’t expect it in the first place. We don’t know for sure what the main reason was that Bloom got fired, but just, because he was and an exhausted search was done to replace him, and just, because Tom said full throttle didn’t mean to me all of a sudden the Red Sox were going to be big spenders again. I didn’t expect the Yam Man, Monty, or Snell in the rotation as it appears many did. It’s still not Mar 28th, and the season hasn’t even started yet, but most on here have written the Red Sox off already.
