I felt this was deserving of its own thread. Wakefield was a great teammate, great player and did a lot for this franchise. The Red Sox unfortunately just announced on Twitter he unfortunately passed due to cancer

Prays for his family and hopefully his wife can beat this terrible disease

RIP Tim. He will always be immortalized being on that 2004 team that broke the curse.

Gave himself up in Game Three of the LCS, to rest the rest for the Greatest Comeback in Baseball History, then won Game Five in extra innings -- when nobody could hit him... or catch him.

Tito appropriately gave him the Game One start in the World Series; none of the five Sox pitchers were on that day, but the bats pulled it out.

Wake was at his best (and worst) in the '03 LCS, with two good starts and Ws, and a loss -- only because he was supposed to be Scott Williamson an inning earlier.

I just herd the news, and very sad. Tim was one of those few people that you didn’t hear anything bad about, and that is hard to do.

Some people liked to criticize the knuckleball, despite the fact that it was hard enough to catch the pitch, let alone hit it.

He was a true battler.

Not many pitchers gave 130+ innings for 17 straight seasons and all with one team (ages 28 to 44.)

He gave over 140 IP in 16 of those 17 seasons.

150+ in 13 of 17.

180+ in 9.

He ended up with a 105 ERA+ for us.

3 seasons:

1995-1997 (608 IP)

118 ERA+

2001-2003

126 ERA+

Incredibly, he had a 106 ERA+ in a 4 season stretch from 2005-2008 at ages 38-41.

A great humanitarian he was the best of men. A real role model. I understand his wife is suffering from cancer as well. This is the saddest of stories.⁸

The first man on the most beloved team of my life ... the 2004 Red Sox ... to pass away. And of course, he is one of the N-1 members of that team, for whom this news breaks my heart.

Great Red Sox player, great husband and father. As opposed to many on this board, I enjoyed his commentary on Red Sox broadcasts and post-game. He knew the game and he knew the Red Sox. Its a shock because, as far as I know, this was not known by many people. Rest In Peace Tim. Red Sox Nation will miss you but never forget your contributions.

Taking one for the team in game 3 and eating up innings so others could rest (and didn't he give up a scheduled start in game 4 to do it?) is what I'll remember him for.
