Once Houck left the game and the BP guys have been excellent, the Sox hitters are trying to get them back into the game. First time in a while

Connor Wong cannot deal with the sweeper . He looks ridiculous on that pitch

In a year or so Wong will be the back up, and Teel will be the starter.

Now that I see that Kenley is available to pitch tonight, my question is why was Martin not used to start the 8th inning? Of course, these dumb ass announcers never brought it up.

In a very winnable game when the score was 7-6 after a very good comeback by the SOX, Cora doesn't use his best reliever. This is just another reason why I'd love to see the fool fired.

Yet another way to lose. Have your starter go down 7-0 in the first 3 innings, come all the way back only to have your 8th inning marginal guy and his follow up, give up two more runs, then have 2 guys K with 2 RISP in bottom 8.

The Rays have to laugh coming into Boston

When the Rays play the SOX, Cash will always out manage Cora.

Lots of ground ball singles tonight by the Rays. Attention Red Sox: hit the ball when guys are on base and something good might happen.

Maybe McGuire will be the backup; at least he can hit.

MLB catchers rarely hit well.

Before tonight's game, there were 44 catchers with 180+ PAs in 2023.

8 were over .800

16 were over .745 (including the 8 over .800)

#23 Wong at .707

#26 McGuire at .698

Team Catcher OPS

2 over .800

8 over .740

The middle teams:

.705 MIN

.694 LAA

#18 BOS at .687

It appears I'm the only one questioning why the SOX best reliever wasn't used tonight. Of course, I'm obviously not a member of the Cora cult.

It doesn’t matter any more.

Weird splits for our catchers in 2023:

vs RHP

.749 Wong the RHB

.639 McGuire the LHB

vs LHP

1.000 McGuire the LHB

.533 Wong the RHB

There certainly is an anti-Cora Cult.

He gets on base more often, too (.314 to .292,) but Wong leads in SLG: .394 to .365.

OBP is worth more, so it's pretty close to a tie, for me.

Only 5 Sox players had a higher SLG and more PAs than Wong.

Only 7 Sox players had a higher OBP and more PAs than McGuire.

Of all the Sox players with 180 ABs...

Wong placed 8th in OPS

McGuire 10th (Ref is 9th.)

One more loss and the Red Sox clinch their second sub .500 season in a row. For all of the fun that these owners have provided with 4 world championships, there have been a lot of sub .500 seasons without fun or competition. I remember a time when the Red Sox went 20 seasons or so in a row playing winning ball — with cheap ass management. There is no excuse for sub .500 seasons with their purse strings.

Modern management theory is that you don't "chase wins", you don't use your best relievers when you're losing (unless it's a must-win game).

I do understand why this approach can be frustrating.

Does anyone here think managers might make different bullpen decisions, depending on whether they actually have a good team or bad team?

For example, if you have an offense like the Rangers -- who have scored over 100 more runs than Boston -- you might bring in your best reliever in a close game, with the confidence to catch up.

But if you're the skipper of a tanking club that is 0-for-Kajillion with RISP this month... maybe you don't chase... wins...
