Assuming that Bloom has a five year contract (do we really know?), he either has to go soon (now or just after the season ends) or he has to be extended. He cannot be allowed to be the CBO as a lame duck. He could wreak all sorts of havoc in that status.

Yes, he does have a five year contract.

Is there any precedence for this havoc thing of which you speak?

I don’t think Bloom is that decisive to wreck any havoc.

IMHO the mistake last year was going over the CBT in the first place. What was the point of that, when you're in the middle of a 5 year plan?

It's both. He went over early and couldn't get back under when he had a chance to.

If you're going to go over for one year, go over by 20M, not couch cushion change.

Would you trade Mayer for Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff? Baseball Trade Values accepted that swap (though Brewers wouldn't). It also accepted Burnes and Devin Williams. The point is that Mayer's value is so high as a prospect that dealing him -- not promoting him -- just may be the fastest way to improve the Sox.

I'd strongly consider a move like that.

Henry has stated in the past that it doesn't make sense to have a CBO going into a final year of a lame duck contract...

Henry told WEEI.com in an interview earlier this season he generally didn't believe in bringing managers or baseball operations personnel like Dombrowski into the final year of a contract. It was either extend Dombrowski beyond 2020 or cut bait – Henry chose the latter.

If the plan was always to not go over, this year, going over last year made no difference.

Wrong!

Wouldn't higher comp picks and more draft pool money have made a difference if you're trying to rebuild a farm system?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

Yes, in the long term, but I meant in this year's spending choices and level of players.

I should have qualified my statement.

No telling what is going to happen with Sox management. Your guess is as good as mine. John Henry seems to be more reclusive than ever. We will find out soon enough.

If Bloom is fired, I do think it will be before the postseason begins. But the biggest factor is whether or not Henry is actually disappointed in the job he’s doing so far…

The old JH of 10-15 years ago would be disappointed, but who knows with this JH of today.

I think others in the organization are intentionally keeping him out of the public eye considering his behavior at the winter event. He's a guy that tends to say too much.

Larry Lucchino is no longer running the Red Sox.

Personally I have no doubt he's very disappointed with the 2022 and 2023 W-L records. And when that starts to show up in lower ticket sales as it did yesterday, that magnifies the disappointment.

When JH made a guest appearance on Felger, and Mass he said that Lucchino ran the Red Sox. Now he doesn’t, and I’m not sure that’s a good thing.

We should probably do the same with you here at talksox.

I'm not sure his disappointment is all that profound because I think he decided to cut back on payroll and specifically to stop buying starters with longish contracts who then fold--like Price and Sale.

And I say that because I think the ending of the movie Moneyball--when John Henry tries to hire Billy Beane for over $10M/year to build a Sox team the way he put together the 2002 A's--is a true story.

However, I also think JH listened to his guys back in 2002 and went the traditional Sox route of buying talent, mostly pitchers, but also David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, from other teams to fill out the ranks/talent from the Sox farm system. And it worked--4 WS in 16 years!! Among those 4 was the 2018 Sox, put together by big spending DD and the best Sox team ever.

But, as I've already said too many times, I believe 2019 was a huge disappointment for John Henry, so he canned DD and brought in Chaim Bloom from the Rays system, the one that this year has the 27th largest payroll in MLB and the 2d best record in the AL and the 3d best in MLB.

About attendance. This year so far the average is 32,889. In 2018, the greatest Sox season ever, it was 35,747. That's a drop of 2,841 or 8 freaking per cent. And don't forget the covid pandemic that shortened the 2020 season and held Sox attendance down to 21,300 just 2 years ago.

Lucchino took (and invited) a lot of flack ... but the team could use that combination of baseball and baseball business acumen.

Bloom blew the trade deadline two years in a row. He should have sold off last year and this year. He could have gotten some useful prospects both years. Instead, he hung on to guys and Sox didn't win anyway. Paxton is a prime example. He could have sold high on him. Now, he is useless. Fire Chaim. The Sox need to clean house and fix the roster. They can't win with 6 DH types. The defense is horrendous. The base running is horrible. The situational hitting is terrible.

Last winter, Bloom signed Kike Hernandez to a 10 million dollar contract and promised him that this season would be much better. Turns out he was right. Kike is now on the first place Dodgers and things are indeed better for him. On the other hand ..............

Hitting is way, way more important than defense or baserunning. Yesterday was an excellent example of weak "situational hitting." In game 2 the Sox were 0 for 15 with RISP.

I disagree slightly. Bloom and the front office should have made a decision - either sell (like you said) or go hard after Verlander/Scherzer/(insert reliable starter here). The choice of "let's see if this team that has not put together a real surge all season will put together a surge when Story and Sale return" was the worst of all worlds.

Ramirez was already purchased when Henry took over, and David Ortiz was the greatest "non-tender" scrapheap pickup in baseball history.

They have 6 DH types? News to me. Defense definitely needs to improve though.

If John Henry is not very disappointed with the last two seasons , then he is completely out of touch with millions of Red Sox fans.
