Wacha and Lugo were not legit targets. ERod was on the Sox' radar, but the other team made a better offer. Gray has a history of ass against the AL East. The inaction may come back to bite them, but the guys off the board right now aren't the problem IMO.

Gray has good numbers against the Yankees and Jays, bad numbers against the Sox, Rays and Orioles. He wouldn't have to pitch against the Sox. So that's 2 AL East teams he has struggled against. Some of that could be randomness. And with the new schedule we're not talking about that many games.

Bottom line: not nearly a good enough reason to pass on him.

Well, you should be happy then. This is why we don't have Betts, or Bogaerts, or (going back) Lester. And because the RS are so firm in this theory which they share with you, that too explains the many last-place finishes.

The Red Sox were cheap for not paying Lester, but then they turned around, and spent more than twice as much for Price. Not paying a future HOF in the prime of his career was criminal, and Bogey should have been handled better too long before he had a chance to opt out, but i wouldn’t put these bunch of FA (Snell, Monty, or Gray) even in the same class.

I have to admit that I thought JH & Co. would feel enough pressure to make a quick signing this offseason. Boy was I wrong!

I don't think "quick" will matter, if we make a big splash deal, at some point.

Glasnow just signed a 4yr/$110M extension. How many would have done that? Good pitcher, but more fragile than Sale.

He's good enough, but yes, to fragile for what we need.

BTW, is there any signing you think was worth it, this winter?

He got the going rate. More importantly, the trade was contingent upon the extension. Red Sox front office forevers take note...

The trades & extensions are becoming rarer and rarer. I'm not sure the Glasnow trade is a sign of a swing back to that tradition.

I will say, I'd love to get Burnes, but am worried about doing it without an agreement on an extension, and if the extension is like what Yamo gets, I'd rather have Yamo, Mayer and Tell than Burnes.

Wrong.

True. Snell 2 CY. Lester has 0.

Porcello has 17 less innings than Glasnow since 2018. Porcello has been retired since 2020............. Sale has 10 more innings than Glasnow in the same period.

So hes' effectively about as fragile than Sale. Wonder who gets more IP in 2024.

The extension would be more like what Nola got: 7/172, but with a with a higher AAV. Yamamoto is getting 300M because of his age.

That would be a tough call. I would say Sale gets more innings in '24, but Glasnow gets more innings over the next 4 years.

Fair point

So, which do you prefer?

Yamo at $325M/10

Or

Burnes at $180M/7

Imanaga or Stroman at $145M/5

Mayer

Teel

I prefer closed brackets. I don't understand what Mayer are doing in there? What is option B exactly?

Duran for Burnes is an overpay according to BTV.

Damn, I meant to type Snell. I shouldn't be drinking on the job like this!!

Lester was a better pitcher, but as you pointed out before the years between Snell’s two CY have not been very good.

Snell had higher highs IMO, but is just inconsistent. If you are into rollercoasters, he's your guy. I'd be more comfortable with a guy like Montgomery that can at least give you innings.

Mayer instead or Duran likely gets the job done.

(I should not have included Teel or Anthony.)

I agree.

Do you see Snell as significantly better than Imanaga?

Snell is a proven upper-level MLB pitcher.

Imanaga is expected to get something like Senga did.

Senga is another guy on a reasonable contract the Sox bypassed. The list keeps growing.

Senga was a year too early. No doubt he would have gotten more this year, so that contract he signed last year looks pretty good now. Agree on bypassing by the Sox.

If the Sox had really been aggressive the last 2 offseasons we could have had Eovaldi, Eflin, Senga, Gray or ERod, all for $80 mill or less. This is what I don't understand. They're basically penny-pinching themselves into s***** rotations.

But supposedly they're bypassing all these lower-cost options to blow the works on Moto - a guy they have a 25% chance of signing, realistically speaking.

Realistically… it’s more like 0%.
