Getting rid of Kike is the best move that Bloom has mad in a while. Kudos to Bloom and good riddance to Kike.

I had been saying that he had to go since last year.

Addition by Subtraction. They should have gotten rid of him several months ago though.

The only way Dugo gets traded is if we nosedive.

We don't have a logjam.

Cora has done this a couple of times:

Casas 1B

Turner 2B

Devers 3B

Duvall LF

Duran CF

Verdugo RF

Yoshida DH

We've also seen Duvall in CF and Duran in LF.

And of course we've seen Refsnyder start against lefties instead of Duran.

The bottom line is, it's not a strict platoon, it's totally flexible.

Right.

Only trading Verdugo if we nosedive?

Before you commit to that, how confident were you that Benintendi wasn’t going anywhere and Renfroe would be the Sox RF before each was dealt?

As we have seen, Cora is not averse to shuffling guys around to get them in the lineup.

This is for sure and I don't necessarily think that that is a good thing. Playing guys out of position doesn't always work out well as we have seen.

Kiki is supposed to be in the Dodger's starting lineup tomorrow. We have to pay $2.5 million of his remaining contract.

If we DFAd him we’d likely paying his whole salary. I’m surprised LA is even paying a million.

I meant the only way we trade Verdugo at this year's deadline. I could see him being traded in the offseason.

The team has been playing great since the last Jays series, in spite of a crippled rotation.

I think maybe Cora deserves a little credit for that.

But I'm a Cora fanboy, as I've said.

I wouldn't be surprised if he does well for the Dodgers.

But this was a solid move by Bloom.

Duvall has big time power. Kike is an awful offensive player.

No he isn't. He's a utility guy, like Brock Holt. you don't want guys like that starting every day and if they are, somethhing has gone wrong. They can be quite useful off the bench in situations that provide favorable matchups for them. That's how Brock Holt was Brock Holt for us for many years. Guessing that's how the Dodgers intend to use Kike.

That said, getting 2 young cost controlled pitchers back is a good deal, especially if they look like they might be able to earn a few trips to the majors here and there in the next few years. We got utility back from a guy who looks like he might be cooked, so that was a great outcome

I don't think any team in the modern era has been this successful with basically a 3 man rotation and 2 opener/longman slots.

BTW don't let what Pivetta is doing blind you to the fact that Chris Murphy is also being extremely effective in the same role.

It's not totally inconceivable to me that Murphy in particular pitches his way into some honest-to-god starts in the next few months or years. We've seen that Pivetta struggles at this, but Murphy is a clean slate, and it may be worth seeing what we have there. Either way, if the kid keeps this up he's gonna get paid by someone. Successful long men are hella rare.

Hope just one does better than Alan Webster or Rubby de la Rosa!

What some folks forget is that we also got James Loney and Jerry Sands in that trade!

:D

Murphy is our property for years, no?

Not to mention, Webster and De La Rosa were traded for Wade Miley, who was in turn traded for Carson Smith.

It just keeps giving…

Go and get India!

Will cost too much. The strength of the Sox system is 2B/SS so it doesn't make a ton of sense to spend capital to bring a struggling player to fill those roles.

689 OPS since June 1

Dodgers will use him as the 13th guy on the roster. He'll be the last guy off the bench, but someone who can fill a lot of holes when needed and a good clubhouse guy.

1.80 ERA

3.82 xFIP

He's been good in a shorter role, I don't think he can turn the lineup over consistently. He struggled doing so in AAA. I don't see how that could get better in MLB. He's been better in the pen, just leave him there.

Sands was then flipped a few months later in the Holt/Hanrahan deal with Melancon.

No utility guy leads the league in rbis.

Chaim Bloom on the trade deadline: “When you’re in the position we’re in now and you start selling out for rentals, that often doesn’t go well…Our North Star is just . . . continuing to build our core”

He's probably right, much as we don't wanna hear it. I do expect some kind of talent coming in at the waiver deadline but a big deal at the trading deadline is a pipe dream.

Red Sox have added IF/OF Eddy Alvarez (50 career MLB games with Marlins, Dodgers) on a minor league deal. He goes to WooSox, per their game notes.

3.82 xFIP is hardly the end of the world. If his ERA rose to match the xFIP, he'd still be considered an effective pitcher.

I do get what you're saying though, Murphy's gotten some luck and will probably regress a bit.

Sounds like paving the way to return Trevor Story to active duty. Alvarez takes over that roster spot on the WooSox.

They were looking for a LHB to play the MIF spots. Alvarez can fill that need for now.

Story still needs a week or two of AB's just to get his timing down.

The team needs a couple of useful arms. Kike has been one of the league's worst regulars this season. Playing out of position, but the bat has been the failure. Oh well. We will always have 2021.
