I want to believe, but remain skeptical. I can confidently say that he's fast, but doesn't have base stealing instincts. The larger bases aren't going to really help him IMO.

Kinda like Jacoby early on.

Fast seems to be his only good trait, but won’t do him much good if he doesn’t know how to use it.

Nope. It's only good when he's running 1st to third or something similar. Station to station? He just doesn't seem to have the baseball instincts to me. He's got the tools to look great in practice, but he's definitely missing something that can take him to that next level.

Incorrect. Ellsbury knew how to steal bases even in the minors. He came up and was stealing bases that first postseason.

2006: 41

2007: 50

2008: 50

2009: 70

Duran

2021: 18

2022: 25

He had bad instincts as a runner. He was picked off, often and ran into many stupid outs, hence the "kinda like" comment.

First 5 seasons: 39 CS and countless thrown out trying for an extra base.

Vince Coleman was caught stealing 39 times in 85 and 86 alone. Did he have bad instincts?

Rickey had 38 in 79 and 80. Did he have bad instincts? I don't think CS are a good measure of instincts.

I can tell you that Duran's lack of SB's are a bigger indication.

Are you honestly denying Jacoby’s bad base running instincts early in his career? The guy ran into more outs than I can remember. I’m not talking just CS.

In no way am I saying Duran should be compared to Ellsbury as a base stealer- just the poor instincts and only earlier in Jacoby’s career.

BTW, Jacoby had bad instincts on D early on, too. Not nearly like Duran, though.

So far the only thing Duran has shown is the ability to hit AAA pitching…

He's pretty good at that.

What kind of living is a FT AAA'er?

Most people see him as the last guy on the 40 man roster, so you're not alone on that.

I think we all need to remember to ignore ST stats though.

Yeah I'm not even factoring in his spring training stats. I just don't think he's a major league quality pitcher, and he doesn't have any upside with his age. I am honestly shocked he's still around.

Yes, I'm denying your biased faulty memory.

2007: 1 BsR (33 games)

2008: 9.2 BsR

And he was much better in 2021 than 2022. We'll see what the new swing does for him this season.

LOL moon says he watches every game, so I'm not going to argue on this one.

Of course one could always look at Ellsbury's baserunning metrics on FanGraphs if they wanted. Maybe compare them to Mookie, who has always been considered a super-smart baserunner.

Players not on the 40 man get $700/week. Guys on their first contract on the 40 man get $46k/year. If they get called up, they get a prorated portion of the MLB minimum $570k.

Mookie only had one season with a BsR better than Jacoby's 2008.

Man, $700/week is not exactly rolling in it.

I believe moon watches every game. I believe Jacoby ran into some stupid outs, which moon remembers. I believe that his overall baserunning ability made up for the stupid outs and then some. Memories from 15 years ago are going to be a little faulty. That's just the way it is. Trust but verify.

It's depressing. It's why MiLB guys need to be added to the union IMO. I will not get onto a soapbox about it though.

I don’t think Moon is any super scout anyways even if the 1-2-3 Kid had a perfect memory.

What exactly are you arguing for?

It's not like Paxton wasn't rehabbing and ramping back up all last season. He didn't suffer a major setback but rather a minor injury at the end of the season. With a normal offseason, I'd expect him to be right here. It's a good sign.

Trainers out to see Paxton and he's coming out the game. He was grabbing at his right hamstring.
