All at the same time AND had enough to build a decent roster around them?

I'm not defending JH. I wish and think he should spend more, but the reality is, he seems to set a mark and stick to it.

I'm not seeing why he'd spend more on top of keeping these guys.

If you truly have a strong farm system, you can spend less on FA. Therefore, you can keep a few of your in house guys at a premium and use your farm to supplement your holes rather than overpaying via the FA market. They just spent like 30M on the bullpen. What if that all came in house instead? Tampa is able to cheaply build pens from year to year.

We didn't have a strong farm, and we probab ly don't have Mayer, if we kept Betts and had a better team in 2020.

Or.. if you have a strong farm, you can spend more on an individual player, because you can have more minimum wage players keeping the payroll at the desired level…

It seems like you need to have a strong farm, first or at the same time to make large and long deals work out.

We didn't after 2019.

Our farm is better, now, but maybe not quite there yet.

I'm not even sure upper management even sees it this way. They may be totally done with large and longs after getting burned with almost all their last ones.

So we all agree:

$400M to Betts

$300M to Bogey

$350M to Devers

Maybe the rest of the roster is filled with Webers, Andrieses, Marwins and Santana's but hey we have our beloved stars to root for as we lose 90 games, every year.

Not sure it would have to be that way, but it very well could have been had JH kept the budget like he has the last 4 years.

Or the Red Sox could just let their stars go play for other teams, and still lose 90 like it looks like they will in '23.

At least it won't cost as much in paying high salaries to players fans might want to come cheer for.

Interestingly, 2012 and 2014 were the only times the Sox have lost 90 games since 1966…

Another feel good story. Makes me feel better we didn’t lose 90 games last year.

What does 2020 pro-rate to?

Or amateur-rate...

Amateur. 2020 was just a feel-good season to distract people from everything else…

The goal is to have a strong farm so you'd figure it out eventually. At some point, a 10 year deal involves faith that your system will cover shortfalls at other positions via the farm. I guess Bloom and Co doesn't believe that they will be able to develop the talent needed to field a successful team in that manner.

No, they'll still spend up to the luxury tax, but on mid level guys that nobody will lining up to buy jerseys of.

If they played a full 162, Springs and Mazza would have been 1-2 in the CY voting. They just needed a normal ST.

Yeah like you haven’t already ordered your Chris Martin jersey…

The Red Sox continue to express their desire to extend Devers. But what if they can't? Has anything changed since Chaim Bloom said the Sox weren't contemplating dealing Devers? Bloom said no. 'He is at the center of everything we’re trying to do'

All they are going to get is a comp pick. :(

Well, we might be far enough out at the deadline that trading him is a no-brainer.

If the Sox are healthy and compete next year, is it worth one year of Devers plus a comp pick rather than trading him?

Even at .500, they'll be within shouting distance like they were this season... You'll see.

If history tells us anything at all it's that Devers can be signed for less money right now than he will demand once he hits the open market.

We as fans know it and the FO knows it. Their unwillingness to sign him now speaks volumes about their longer term plan.

I think the Devers can be signed for less money right now ship has sailed. Maybe a year ago, but certainly not now.

No.

He can be signed for less now than as a free agent, but not less than (or equal to) what it would have taken 9 months ago…

What is their longer term plan in your opinion?

It will still be less money than what it would be in November.

I don’t see that happening unless signings go up even more next off season. Raffy has seen what Bogey could have signed for last offseason, and what he signed for this offseason, but now the big money is blowing in the wind.

@BeyondtheMnstr

Red Sox All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers will not entertain extension talks once the season begins, according to The Boston Globe’s @alexspeier.
