Maybe making room for a big splash signing.

Maybe for a Rule 5 selection.

Most likely Rule 5.

A DFA to accommodate a Rule 5 player needs to be done prior to the draft. A DFA to accommodate a free agent or trade acquisition can be done afterwards…

Pepen is reporting that Bogaerts will go back to the Sox with the best offer he gets.

This confirms my theory of what the Sox would do back over the summer.

I think it's a bad idea for the Sox to wait around for Bogey though.

If he is truly insisting on staying at SS for the full contract, he may be the last guy signed.

Yes, we can't wait it out.

If they are 100% serious about resigning him, I think they will have saved money by waiting around.

Well, it shouldn't stop them from making some moves for pitching...

I get a feeling there will be no "major spending" on pitching. Maybe a trade. Maybe a $10-15M x 3 or 4 year SP'er and a RP'er at $5-8M a year.

I'm not seeing how we spend the $90M some of thought we'd be spending.

It might not be a bad idea for the Sox, but it will absolutely be annoying to the fans…

Why? Nearly all the names you had listed as targets are still on the board, aren't they?

We aren't signing Judge or deGrom- probably not Turner, Nimmo or Rodon.

We might still be in on Correa or Bogey.

Like I pointed out before: I don't want 9 x $10M contracts, this year. I don't even see 9 big holes in the 40.

I suppose there are 6 x $15M contracts out there, or if we sign Correa, 30-15-15-15-15, but what does that mean?

Correa

Conforto

Contreras

Nate

Hill

and a couple RP'ers that equal 15 together?

I guess I'm just letting the defeatism that is widespread on this board, and apparently even more so on sports talk radio take hold of my soul.

As long as they continue to spend elsewhere and do still bring back Xander, it's not a problem.

Without any action, there's just nothing else to talk about except "Sox lose #1 interest Abreu and Eflin stiffs Sox."

Not seeing defeatism, but instead there's understandable skepticism that comes with being fans of a last place team. Most really just want something to be optimistic about.

Last place sucks, whether it's the great AL East or Vitellius' Feast (if gluttony and gambling are your hobby).

Meanwhile, we await the upcoming Winter Meetings and imminent moves teased by the Red Sox PR department.

So far this week, two players Boston had reported interest in reportedly weren't interested in Boston enough.

It's not exciting but it's a good signing.

This is reason for optimism, a legitimate reliever -- seven years in the Show and zero starts -- acquired when he was actually good... 0.527 WHIP in 26 games for LA down the stretch.

Here's why it's not exciting: fans won't yell and scream when Martin enters the game because he doesn't walk batters. Career high BB in a season is 6.

Red Sox just got more watchable. And all this for Barnes money... Now Bloom just needs an ace starter for Martin to relieve before the closer comes in.

Good to see a little spending on the bullpen. Martin is a tall righthander who will turn 37 early next season but should be an improvement from most of the guys we have been watching. He pitched very well for the Dodgers last year.

Looks like a good signing, but at 37 who knows. I think they still need a few more arms for the pen, and I still say they need an actual closer, which I know the Red Sox are probably not going to get.

Agree that more bullpen help is needed. I don't think Martin has closer's stuff, but he should help.

We need bullpen help, but I don’t get why they signed him for 2 years.

Bloom is trying to make up from last year’s signing of Streakman.

Probably because they had too to get the deal done. Someone else was either offering him much more AAV or a little less than the Sox offer on 2 years.
