Too little too late.

Not sure why Brasier was spared.

No word yet on who is getting called up, but as these two were DFAd, it could be anyone in the organization.

The bullpen needs a complete overhaul for next season. I would make Whitlock a starter. Keep Houck and Schreiber in the pen , but acquire a good closer ( you mentioned Treinen , who would be good ) . Then fill it out with hard throwing , but maybe not well known relievers. No more retreads.

Okay, Ort and Kelly are called up, and Kelly was added to the 40.

Who gets added to the other 40 man slot?

Tristan Casas?

Frank German?

Enmanuel Valdez?

Chris Murphy?

MLBTR reports...

Sawamura’s contract came with a split option for 2023, with various escalators in play. MLBTR’s Anthony Franco recently looked at that option, noting that the club option had already increase to $3.6MM. Since that writing, it has ticked up to $3.7MM and still had room to climb. If the club had declined that option, Sawamura would have had the ability to trigger a player option, which had reached $1.9MM as of today and could still have grown further. It seems the Red Sox didn’t intend to trigger their end of the deal and are cutting Sawamura loose.

An interesting point on Sawamura that shows how stats can be deceiving.

How is Braiser not DFAed?

All three seem equally deserving.

He's getting paid more than Sawamura and Davis and will be up for his last arb, next season.

I'm guessing he'll be non-tendered.

So is it safe to now say officially from the FO, that this season is over and September/short Oct will be tryouts for some organizational candidates ? If so, why ORT , we have seen his non-stuff ? Kelly is a retread already, though with no MLb experience. When you pass through both the Angels and A's organizations and can't break through, you have a limited future as a 27 year old newbie.

Maybe the bigger question is why makes moves at all now ? This is not a desperate attempt to win the next 34 games. These are moves that should have been made August 2nd, after trying like hell to trade one or both of Sawamura and Davis for literally anything who could walk and talk or read signs.

You do realize the Sox best reliever this year has been a 28yo retread who couldn’t make it in the Tigers’ bullpen and was released after all of 28 career IP?

Not to mention Kelly isn’t some 9 year minor league veteran. He played college ball, then spent one season on the A’s system and 2 seasons (in which he played at 4 total levels) in the Angels system…

Bringing Ort back up is just another example that Bloom has no idea what he’s doing, and hasn’t all year with the BP. Might as well bring Hansel back.

Ort was able to pitch in high pressure situations in AAA. Maybe he can figure it out in MLB if given a longer look.

Davis and Sawamura were both low leverage guys who Cora couldn’t trust in important spots. The bar of being better than Sawamura and Davis isn’t that high. Kelly and Ort aren’t Paplebon, but they could be interesting arms.

Maybe they don’t work out? I would have rather seen this back in early July when there was something to play for.

Relievers are fungible. Run through them until you find the guys that stick. That’s how they got Schreiber.

Why not try Bazardo?

Yes, and that's why our pen was so good this year!

We need high ceiling guys, not bunch of Brasiers. ERA's for relievers is the worst stat. Bases loaded two outs, a double clears the bases but all runs are charged to previous pitcher.

Real test is Brasier can not hold a runner on second in extra inning games. That runner is going to score.

The formula I would love to see is to bring up all the potential starters, Mata as an example and start them in the bullpen. That will limit their pitch count and maybe in year three they can be groomed as a starter.

I too don't want to see bunch of guys from the beer league.

This pen was stagnant. They held onto retreads like Brasier and Davis for too long IMO.

The important thing is, Sawamura and Davis are gone.

The next step is to stop pretending Kelly and Ort are permanent additions. One or both could be demoted next week. And then back in two weeks.

And the Sox still have one open 40 man roster spot if they want to add another reliever…

Who’s pretending that Kelly, and Ort are permanent additions? I’ve seen enough of Ort if it’s only for 1 day. As 700 would say a ham, and egger.

This is the problem with relievers, they're probably more volatile than any other position. With a few exceptions, a lot of guys look like an 8th 9th inning guy one year, and then they look terrible the next. This is why I think scouting over money pays the biggest dividends in the bullpen.

Guys that stick like throwing spaghetti against the wall? Bloom’s been doing that for 2 years now.

That would likely be Frank German from the Ottavino deal, but he's struggled the last week.

It’s a dead season. Throw everything at the wall. Sit everyone you don’t want hurt.

Play all bubble roster players to get a better read on who to keep and who to boot.
