Trading Vazquez shouldn't be a surprise for any fans who have been following the Red Sox since last winter, when Bloom showed he was ready to move on from Vazquez when it was disclosed there was a deal discussed for Stallings (who instead was swapped to Miami). They weren't going to resign Vaz, so at least they got two lottery tickets for him before he left.

I'm not a big Bloom apologist, but at least he's showing he's not just cleaning house, after adding a new catcher and outfielder. If indignant fans could just shut up about the new guys' character flaws -- oh, the horrors -- they'd see that.

Vaz is fine. He was a decent catcher with some highlight moments, but ultimately he's replaceable. Let's not pretend they just traded Varitek in 2003. It's up to Bloom to find the replacement.

People complain over and over again that baseball players are too chummy and they hate it when players yuck it up on the field. However, when you have a guy like Pham who actively says he'll fight the other team, the same people get pissed off about it.

You can't eat the whole cake and then be pissed off that the cake isn't sitting on the counter later on.

Umm, it was a fight over fantasy football and a joke gif joc sent to him about his FORMER team. Give me a break....

On one hand you say it happens all the time and then you say normally it happens in the clubhouse.

Bottom line is players don't normally get blindsided by reporters with the news of a trade during warmups on the field while in uniform. Players don't normally sit through the whole hitters scouting meeting before the game when they are being traded to that night's opponent.

Sheesh.....

You're completely misinterpreting my comment. I went back and read what I wrote and you know what? I blame myself, I worded it wrong and would like to reiterate and clarify if that's ok.

A guy can get traded at any time. When he's in the shower, at home, asleep, eating lunch, taking batting practice etc etc etc. During this time of year when we see trades happen during a game we usually see the guy get up in the clubhouse and hug everyone....its why we call it "hug watch".

I don't think it's reasonable for a G.M. to have his eyes glued to where every single player is at every moment while they're working the phones with other G.M.s Bloom likely had no idea Vaz was about to be interviewed, IDK maybe he did, maybe he intended to inform him and someone was on their way down to talk to him but it was too late. It was unfortunate, but that's the business of baseball. Trades happen when they happen. I don't think the Sox did anything malicous.

Google "Luke Voit Tommy Pham."

Pham's first issue wasn't Joc. People have always gotten uppity over him.

And Verdugo was at a party where Buchholz took a laptop and erased Oil Can's overdue tapes while videotaping Yaz smoking a cigarette! OMFG!!!

I'm surprised Jay Groome's dad didn't make an appearance.

Lest we forget the should-be-forgotten Julio Valdez, the worst Sox perpetrator of all time…

If this is Bloom's way of being GM I'm longing for someone else to fill his chair.

Welcome to the world of second tier baseball.

Was it OJ's private investigators (still searching) who ran into Ugueth Urbina with a machete?

Now there is a true piece of s***.

What would you have done differently at this moment?

What would you have done differently at this moment?

We're missing Devers, Story, JD had back issues, Wacha, Hill, Eovaldi for a bit, Kike ever coming back?

In April/May, we're complaining about $7M for Vaz and now he's a MVP.

We can resign him when he becomes a FA. His value had peaked. Perfect time to trade him.

Bloom also got rid of Dieckman's $4M salary for 2023.

Let's just wait and see what transpires today.

PS...I'm agreeing with you.

Getting rid of Dreckman is just and absolute win. Did the ChiSox really eat all the salary?

It's the GOG factor, man, and it's heavily represented here.

Grumpy Old Guys.

Hey! Stop with the anti-GOG comments! Don't forget: we're a protected class. Plus, a lot of us are emotionally scarred from our hippie days!

So you are saying that pham has a history of violent behavior or at least violent taunts.

Got it, thanks.

At THIS moment? There's nothing that can be done. Vaz has been traded. Period. End of story.

A few days ago I'd have been looking at who the team could have possibly kept with the intention of remaining competitive and Vaz would have been near the top of the list.

I also would have been considering the RIGHT way to let someone know if they'd been traded.

Bloom failed on both counts.

Bloom has been the poster child for the GM who is always the bridesmaid and never the bride - but his teams make money. That may be the benchmark for the owners but it fails miserably from the point of view of those fans who want a WSC.

He might actually make a pretty good platoon with Duran/Verdugo next year or even this year going down the stretch. They got him for next to nothing.

You say GOG, I say old men yelling at clouds.....semantics.

"Hey, you, get off of my cloud!"

Ahh... the old "we can resign him when he becomes a FA" statement. Let's see, where have I heard that before?.... Hmmm...Lester?... Betts? Ya, right. Pfft.

If we're going to try to predict the perfect time to trade someone let's let the entire left side of the IF go too. Neither of those guys are going to be worth more than they are now, JH can save millions, and we can land a few minor leaguers who probably will never pan out. But if they do pan out we can trade them for MORE minor leaguers, and so ad infinitum. We can regress from being a 2nd tier team to being the equivalent of the Twins. Or the Rays. /s/

Am I the only one who sees a pattern there?

I understand why they did it, but this move truly makes me sad. Above every other player, Vaz was the one who cared the most, was the most invested in staying with the Red Sox, and wanted to win the most, IMO. Plus, I've just always been a Vaz fan. I'm sure that Vaz will turn the page and soon be very happy with the Astros, but it was tough for me to watch his 3-second pregame interview.

He also could be back in the off season as he won't be terribly expensive

Finally a sox fan who is being honest and not wearing the rose colored glasses.

What they did to him was sad yet many posters on here tried to defend it.

Apparently, not only are the ChiSox eat all of Dreckman's salary, they are also sending the Red Sox either a PTBNL or cash.

Say what you want about the other two trades, this one is an absolute win.

The question is what makes so many old guys become grumpy?

Why would anyone want to go back to an organization that hung him out to dry like that?

Low testosterone. Unhappy with how their lives turned out.
