But they're so clean-shaven on the outside.

It's more important to present a clean image than to be a good person. /s

Padres getting both Soto and Bell from the Nats. Beat the Dodgers to the punch. Talk about a team going all in !!!

@JeffPassan

The package going back to Washington for Juan Soto and Josh Bell, sources tell ESPN:

- LHP MacKenzie Gore

- OF Robert Hassell III

- SS C.J. Abrams

- OF James Wood

- RHP Jarlin Susana

- one more major league player

That's the only holdup right now to the agreed-upon deal.

Padres just can't let Snell go?

I still remember the article I read where A-rod went to his girlfriend's home and peed on her rug. Now there's a class human being.

This will not stand, ya know, this aggression will not stand, man.

I think he will prove to cum in handy for the sox

Just remember, your initial reaction last night was indignation at fans making jokes about McGuire:

And some of them are very weak attempts at being a stand up comic.

Once the outrage machine sputtered you had nowhere else to go.

Shame!

Shame!

Shame!

For at least two weeks now I have whined as much as anyone about this Sox team--poor defense, poor baserunning, untimely hitting, lousy pitching, you name it.

So, yes, you can can make a case that Bloom is at fault and maybe should be fired.

Nevertheless, consider the following--

1. We don't know what JH's guidance is, but can be pretty sure it's not to spend a lot of money for quick fixes. As I've said countless times, the Sox are currently paying Sale, Price, and Eovaldi--all hired by DD--$63M this season, for which they have contributed a grand total of +.9 in WAR.

2. The Sox have been hit especially hard by injuries this year, especially the rotation of Sale, Eovaldi, Wacha, Hill, and Whitlock (now back in the bullpen). But I think Kike's absence has also been felt because last year the outfield overall was a combined plus in WAR and this year it's minus. Also, more recently, Devers and Story, whose WAR's even now are 4.3 and 2.1, the 1st and 3d best among the lineup players.

3. Despite the above, the Sox are at .500 and definitely in the hunt for a wild card. And they play in the AL East, which has by far the best W-L record in MLB, which means the Sox play 4 X 19 = 76 games against teams which all (including the Orioles) have winning records.

4. And the little matter of the 2021 season, Bloom's first full season after taking over as GM. That team lacked the glorious boys of summer that made 2018 so spectacularly good--Mookie (WAR 10.9), Price, Sale (when he was good), Porcello, Kimbrel, JDM in his best season ever (OPS 1.031), et al. Nevertheless, last year's team won 92 games, beat the Yankees and their ace in the wild card game, beat the Rays (100 wins, most in the AL) in the ALDS, 4 games to 2, and finally lost, 4 games to 2, to the Astros.

Yes, how soon they forget.

A little over 4 hours left to see if Nate and/or JD will be changing uniforms.

I’ll admit it - mixed emotions…

Harder for me to see guys like Vaz/Xander/Betts go. JD and Nate were brought from outside the org, added lots of value, but I never saw as franchise guys.

SD has been trying to trade him for years.

Seems obvious to me the Sox are going to get a prospect back as well to take on some salary. Will see soon.

Is SD absorbs 90% of Hosmer’s deal it’s a very good move

Again only if Boston is on the hook for very little

I still move Martinez! Casas looks like the real deal here since returning to AAA

Free up the DH for both Casas and hosmer

JD was great but to old to warrant any extension with Devers and XB looming

Make a deal Bloom I’m gaining confidence by the minute

Here is the thing about being reluctant to trade prospects: .There are plenty more where they came from. Latin America is a hotbed of baseball. Kids down there play ball the way U.S. kids play video games . There is , and will be , a steady stream of good , young prospects coming along every year. Right now , there are plenty of talented 14 and 15 year olds working hard for their big chance at a good life. You never heard of them as yet , but you soon will be calling them " prospects ".

I think the McGuire jokes have more than run their course. They have been beaten to death. Time to let it go. ( No puns intended ) .

And it's one guy making all the jokes.

I am disappointed with the lack of moves by Bloom at the trade deadline. We neither added excellent prospects nor filled holes in the lineup. Eovaldi and Martinez are still with the club and become FAs next season. The most we did is to get some outfield help and first base help. Is it because Red Sox players were lightly regarded, too expensive of something else? This is a pattern for Bloom of not improving the team but sitting on the sidelines. We did lose out best catcher and did nothing to replace that loss as who we got is lightly regarded. I give Bloom a D for this trade deadline.

As someone who is not invested in the Padres, I can say good for them. If it's not going to be the Sox winning the WS, I will pull for them.

That said, if I'm recalling correctly, I believe I heard that the Padres traded away 29 of their prospects in the past few days including many of the top ones. I may very well be mistaken on the numbers, but their farm system took a big hit. While I understand that one of the reasons for developing a strong farm system is to use the prospects in trade, I would shudder if this were the Sox. The Padres also added a good amount of payroll. I will be interested to see how this affects the Padres a few years down the road.

There are times when a team has to 'go for it', but I think the going for it can sometimes be taken to an unnecessary extreme for something that is not even remotely guaranteed.

I am happy to see that both remain with the team. :)

J.D. has been a big part of this team for five years. He deserves more respect than he gets on on this site.. Same for Eovaldi.

Agreed.

Padres fans are excited about Preller now, but they could sour on him really quick. If they don't re-sign Soto or get a WS in the next few years, this is an abject failure.
