Baseball Trade Values gave righthander Luis Castillo a surplus value of $41.2 million and the package of Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo, Levi Stoudt and Andrew Moore a combined surplus value of $63.1 million:

This Seattle fan was surprised the Mariners would trade both shortstop prospects -- Marte and Arroyo -- in a midseason deal. Baseball Trade Values would have approved the trade with Arroyo out of the package.

This is a pretty big overpay coming out of left field with a team still pretty well locked out of being a division winner. I’m stunned actually. The Reds made out like bandits here, especially if Arroyo progresses.

An equivalent package from Boston per BTV would have been Casas, Yorke and Mata…

I’d have done that, if we felt an extension could be reached.

Mariners made a nice pickup getting Luis Castillo.

The Cincinnati Reds have now traded two of my fantasy team's players -- Jesse Winker and Luis Castillo -- to the Seattle Mariners this year.

With a 28-man roster that includes Castillo, Winker, Julio Rodriguez, Ty France, Robbie Ray, Logan Gilbert, Marco Gonzales, Eugenio Suarez*, George Kirby, Cal Raleigh and Jarred Kelenic, my fantasy team is not all that competitive in a 10-team mixed league.

But it's a fun team for this Seattle fan to follow.

* Winker was a keeper from last year's fantasy team but Suarez was taken at the fantasy auction after his trade to Seattle

Your nuts

Castillo is to old for near ready ML prospects (Casa) not to forget his next contract will be an overpay because of such

Mariners gave up two beer league pitchers and 2 young A Ball prospects who could still flame out

Perfect example why the Reds suck. Castillo was a late bloomer they should have extended him years ago when they knew what they had or at least gotten a better return those years

When you sign a player like Moustakes for 4 years 66 million 5 years past his prime, this is what you get!

I said "jacko" not STORK.

I couldn't be STORK, if I tried. Too convoluted and twisted to emulate.

Hilarious that you think you would have to try. Like Buck Owens used to say. All you have to do is Act Naturally.

Do you even read what you write? Castillo doesn't turn 30 til the offseason. He's been a 4WAR pitcher for the last 4 seasons, especially when you plot out his ridiculous 2.4WAR in 12 starts during the pandemic sprint. He has one more year of control after this one. Castillo is an ace/very solid #2 with more than one year of control. You definitely deal whatever you can to get these guys. For the Mariners, their best prospects were in A ball. Marte happens to be the #18 prospect in all of baseball this year. Arroyo was in the 60's. If the sox wanted him, they'd have to give up Casas. Proximity is no longer the biggest factor in prospect for star player trades. It's projection and the Reds got a haul

Like I say, STORK just spews stuff and doesn't let the facts get in the way.

I agree--of course. But he seems to enjoy doing so, and we should be grateful he has just 506 posts in 6 years. Plus consider his moniker.

Like Berrios is better than Castillo?

Lol

And yet his predictions are about as accurate as moonslob's with all of his "facts"......

Way to modest for you, and as the saying goes if the glove fits you must convict, and in your case a perfect fit.

That's your second response to the same post. It's almost like you're trying to start something.

Trying to start something? I’m not the one who stared something in the first place, but glad you are sticking up for your buddy. I don’t believe you made the same comment when something was started in the ist place. Very interesting.

moon was talking about STORK, so I'm not sure how that was starting anything with you. Yes, it's very interesting indeed.

I never said this particular instance had anything to do with me, but I was commenting on here just like everyone else does.

Again, you boys need to do your homework!

Berrios was younger and a more proven track record and could have been had for a flawed ML prospect

Castillo older with a small sample size. I bet Seattle will give him 5 years 125 million and at age 33 he will be washed up

You boys b!tch about the Sale deal and want to deal a power prospect bat for a 30 year old arm that will command at least 22 per season , no thanks

Trades made like the above sets you back due to incoming players age and projected salary.

Cashman is no dummy!

He stole AB from Bloom and KC, those are the deals you make. Not a 30 year old from the Reds

Back to the topic at hand….

The Mets want JD and Vaz. The Sox want their #4 prospect. Who blinks?

Vientos is #4 or is it Mauricio?

Allan kid is intriguing but might be an injury concern going forward

Luis Castillo, who is 17 months older than Jose Berrios, has posted 16.5 fWAR in 792.1 career innings while Berrios has posted 15.5 fWAR in 959 innings.

The midseason trades involved comparable Top 100 prospects: Double A prospects Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson for Berrios and Single A prospects Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo for Castillo. The Mariners added longshots Levi Stoudt and Andrew Moore to seal the Castillo deal.

Time may tell whether either or both trades were overpays.

Or not.

On paper, the deals look similar pre hindsight, but in know way does a Duran and some lesser pieces match up with what ended up being given.

My own opinion is that posters like Swi's Ghost , MADSTORK, JDavis and a couple of others bring something different to a sometimes boring forum .A little controversy , humor ( maybe not funny to all ) and a little tweaking and ball breaking ( mostly lighthearted) . Nothing to get all bent out of shape over. Personally, I never put anyone on ignore. And , except for posting something really egregious, disgusting or clearly offensive , I don't think anyone should be banned. As for the rest of you , my advice would be , lighten up , have a little fun with it all and please don't take yourselves or the forum so seriously. Just my take. You don't have to like it , and I'm sure some won't. Have a nice day.
