If they are going to be doing deals, it will be to help clear the 40 man for next offseason. This could help as Quintana and Bell are on expiring contracts. I'm just not sure if it brings enough long term value for Bloom.

BTV accepted this multi-team deal:

To BOS

RHP Bednar

SP J Quintana

C Rodrigues (prospect)

1B Josh Bell

To PIT

Duran

Dalbec

Downs

Gonzalez

Jimenez

Milas (C prospect from WSH)

To WSH

Jordan

We get a decent rental SP'er in Quintana, a solid RHP in Bednar with several years of team control remaining, a solid 1B rental in Bell and a possible catcher for the future in Rodriquez.

We give up more than Bloom would likely do, but this deal might make us top contenders, if other players are stepping up their game and one of Sale or Paxton are contributing. It allows Whitlock to return to the pen along with using Bednar is a pen role. Bell gives us a reliable 1Bman for 2+ months.

If Hang’em Chaim can get bednar from the pirates, that would be a tremendous win for us!

It would also clear room for rule 5 protectees and future FA singnees.

Many are calling for Bloom to pick up 1 or 2 stronger relievers by the deadline, though sooner would be better. But you will only pop a good pitcher off a team that is not competitive and that will cost prospects or multi-year controllables. OR you could find a contending team with an injury issue that would want X, JDM, Eovaldi (expiring contracts). It will get interesting.

You can only trade with teams when they’re selling.

Unless you plan to blow them away, why would even the tankingest team deal now when there may be better offers on the table later?

June trades do happen, but not all that often.

Sometimes deals are made where both teams are in buying mode, but share different needs.

With sale, Whitlock and eovaldi returning next month, we are pretty set at starter for the back half of the season.

Two killer relievers would be nice and desperately needed.

But really, I see Hang’em Chaim focusing on trading for potential impact guys on expiring contracts. (Ala schwarber)

Potential return versus a few months of payroll commitment.

Bloom is looking to add relievers. The issue is that many of the other teams are kind of stuck in limbo right now. They don't know if they want to be buyers or sellers, so Bloom is having a difficult time finding teams to trade with. He is not going to pay a fortune for them though.

Regardless of what kinds of players Bloom chooses to add, he won't from the long term plan.

I'm not sure the money owed whoever we acquire will be an issue. We are over the tax line, already.

I'm also thinking many posters will be disappointed by how few players we acquire at the deadline or the quality of the 1-2 guys (maybe 3) we end up getting.

Unless others get injured, the return of Kike, Sale, Nate, Whitlock and Taylor (I wouldn't count Barnes totally out, either) will squeeze the current roster out of any and maybe all marginal, replaceable players, as it is. Pitchers doing very well, now, maybe be moved from the rotation to the pen. OF'ers starting or platooning, now, maybe be sent to the bench or AAA upon Kike's return. (JBJ is not going anywhere- like it or not.)

I'm thinking we might trade for a 1Bman and a solid RP'er- maybe 2. We may end up trading for someone like we did last season: Schwarber, Robles & Davis.

Here is how I see a totally healthy 26 man roster, and I'm not even counting on Paxton at the deadline:

SP1 Eovaldi

SP2 Wacha

SP3 Pivetta

SP4 Sale

SP5 Hill (Whitlock/Paxton)

Closer Houck

RP2 Whitlock

RP3 Strahm

RP4 Schreiber

RP5 Taylor

RP6 Brasier

RP7 Sawamura

RP8 Barnes/Diekman/Winckowski/Seabold/Danish (DFA/Trade: Robles & Davis)

I do see a need replacing these bottom pen guys like maybe Sawamura, Barnes, Brasier and others on the bottom line, but maybe not 2 slots, and as much as many posters dislike many guys on this list, some have trade value. We may end up trading some pen depth and then upgrading the pen in other moves. Quantity for better quality.

Now, the everyday 13:

C Vaz & Plawecki

1B Cordero & Dalbec platoon

2B Story

3B Devers

SS Bogey

LF Verdugo

CF Kike & Duran

RF JBJ (Kike?)

Utility: Arroyo or Refsnyder (Both out of options)

Do we trade or DFA Arroyo?

Might we part with Duran to get a solid RP'er (hopefully more than a rental?)

Cordero & Dalbec have an option remaining, so we could trade for a 1Bman, and not lose one in the system, but one would be demoted- maybe both, so we can keep Arroyo & Refsnyder on the 26.

This team is stronger and deeper on paper than the 2021 trade deadline team. I'm not sure it will be so easy to add just 3 players. We added 5, last year:

Schwarber

Robles

Davis

Shaw

Iggy (after the deadline)

DH JD

I would like to see the Red Sox acquire J.Bell without parting with a top prospect. It would be great if the Red Sox could acquire Bell for J.Downs and K.Crawford, but I suspect it won't be that easy. Even though he has limited value, it would make sense to move J.Downs at the trade deadline--give another team the opportunity to fix him.

Wilson Contreras because he’s a massive upgrade at Catcher and yes Josh Bell who is a massive upgrade at 1b ...Thad ward and Nick York likely the price to acquire both guys with maybe a low level lottery ticket attached to both deals .I would absolutely trade for Wilson this weekend. As far as Vaz he’s more than just a meh catcher ,he could play some 1b LF and C for the remainder of the season or you package him and Bobby up for BP help .

I’m glad you’re not our GM….

I think you overvalue what it will cost to get 2 months of Josh Bell…

How is Robles still logging innings ? Is this on Cora or this idiot GM ? I’m calling it on this idiot GM .

The GM doesn’t put relievers into games…

He does keep him on the squad though.

Yes. And he needs to stop doing that, although it wasn’t the question.

And Cora is the one who puts him in…

I realize, but Bloom is involved. We shouldn't expect Cora not to use the pitchers Bloom has given him.

True.

But right now Cora appears to have a “f*** It” squad that he uses together consisting of Robles, Danish, and Diekman. Apparently his logic is why waste even a semi-effective reliever if one of these guys is going to blow the game anyway?

But Cora, particularly with his usage of Houck and lately Robles, is far from blame-free with this bullpen..

Even one of those two would be more than tha Nats would insist on.

Bullpen better last two games. Not the hitting.

Would the Red Sox have any interest in reliever Ken Giles or first baseman Carlos Santana of the Seattle Mariners?

Are they even healthy?

I’ll say no, even if they are.

For how much money?

He’s got 2 arb years left.

You do t trade money to get Soto. You trade Mayer, Casas and more.

Soto has already turned down $300M+, so that would be a big no to me, which was my main point, and not that the Red Sox would have to trade a haul to get him.

Too big for me, too.

No way I trade that much for just 2 years. I thought you might, since prospects are worth nothing until they play in the bigs.

Cue: change the question.

Ken Giles, who has surrendered one hit and no runs in four appearances since his activation June 20, was mentioned as a potential trade target in an Over the Monster podcast last month:

https://www.overthemonster.com/2022/6/10/23162366/the-red-seat-podcast-early-trade-targets

ZiPS projects Carlos Santana with a rest-of-season wRC+ of 113; to date Red Sox first basemen have posted a wRC+ of 81. Santana has played in 58 games this season and in June posted a cherry-picked .323/.450/.492/.942 line in 80 plate appearances.
