Just an aside but I see the Yankees have gone into a real swoon. I blocked the Yankee fan who used blue coloring on his fonts but I'll bet his troll like posts have changed in tone of late. The Rays are holding the vaunted Yankee bats down again tonight.

Bad enough that they thought he would help them in the first place.

The fact that he is the 41st best player on the Pirates shows just how bad the Sox were in 2020.

We hear a lot of criticism of how badly our offense is doing. Imagine having these numbers from all your batters with 70+ PAs (17 of them):

OPS, listed in order of players by most PAs

755

767

563

726

819

740

704

724

649

714

475

788

627

477

499

584

548

This is the Tampa Rays. (.681 team OPS)

Now, how about the Yanks? (14 players with 70+ PAs) .761 team OPS

1.061

798

825

729

690

640

644

807

621

723

609

1.138

621

526

Now, the Sox (before tonight): 14 over 70 PAs (.719 team OPS)

818

714

933

779

713

759

649

578

(Pham is at .831 but only 59 PAs)

Although Springs has turned out to be a lot better than expected.

This is a big part of the "Rays way." So many player have their career years with them, and often they move on to be replaced by the next Springs. Sometimes, they can trade them for the next Springs.

Mazza hasn't been as good.

If Hang’em Chaim even jokes about resigning this clown, someone in the baseball operations department needs to take a baseball bat upside Hang’em Chaim’s head!

I think the question would be, WHERE are they signing him to play. You need 180 guys in your organization, and that doesn't include IL and unassigned players.

They miss a lot, but hit enough to make an impact.

(Mazza wasn't too bad in '21.)

It was Beeks (Nate trade) that let up the granny, last night in NY.

If our big 3 hitters ever wake up from their funk, the supporting cast has been giving it their all:

14 day OPS

1.250 Dugo

.957 Arroyo

.833 Dalbec

.786 Pham

.784 McGuire

These guys, not so much...

.586 Duran

.584 Hosmer

.577 JD (.670 last 7 days)

.564 Devers (.661 last 7 days)

.523 Bogey (.554 last 7 days

.375 Plawecki

.236 Kike

Our pitching staff has a .496 OPS Against in the last 7 days!

May the DFA Brasier posters be aware:

Last 9 PAs Opps are 0-9 with no BBs

Whitlock 0-9 with 1 BB in 10 PAs.

Sawamura 1-10 no BBs

Pivetta 1-22 w 3 BBs

Wacha 2-23 1 BB

Barnes 2-11 0 BB

(Nothing more than singles for all the above hits allowed.)

Hill 3-18 0BB (1 HR)

Crawford 2-19 4 BB (1 HR)

The Rays have never won a championship . And it doesn't look like this is the year either. They don't like to spend money . But they do like those revenue sharing checks.

True enough!

I'd rather be a Rays fan than half the teams in MLB that spend way more than them.

Personally I wouldn't want to be a fan of any team that's never won a title.

After watching a game at that dump in St Pete I wonder why anyone would want to be a Ray's fan.

Some fans like the process better than the results. Personally I go for the results.

But up to and through 2003, it’s not like 1918 was so recent I could enjoy it.

And winning that first title in 2004 was far and away the most special. It was something I (understandably) thought I’d never see in my lifetime….

Lots of good teams with lots of god talent though from 67 to 2003.

The goal is always to win a championship. All the owners and GMs can do is consistently put together a team that has a real shot. After that , you just have to hope that things break right in the post season. John Henry cannot will Dave Roberts to steal a base or David Ortiz to get a big hit. During the long drought/curse the Sox had several teams that were good enough to win it all. But there were always a couple of plays that went the wrong way. That's life.

I think for fans, yes, the true goal is to watch your team win it all. The secondary goal is to be competitive as much as possible, and when not, at least be a bit entertaining.

To owners and some GMs, who know their first priority is owner profits not winning, the number one goal is probably to make money. The second goal might be to win rings, compete a lot or to give your customer (the fan) the perception that you are good enough to compete.

Some folks have a long history of pulling for the underdog ... in sports and outside sports.

I almost always do. many times my favorite teams have been underdogs, too.

But the comments were about not wanting to be a fan of a team that never won a title. Or bring a fan of results over the process.

I mean, the 1987 Twins - a team with 85 wins and a favorable playoff schedule determined by the old “alternating years” method - got better results than any team Yastrzemski or Ted Williams played for. We’re the ‘87 Twins fandom-worthy?

Yes, and I was a Red Sox fan for 35 years before I saw them win it all. And it was very painful at times.

I'm just saying that given my preference, it's not something I would go through.

I didn't express it very well.

Yaz ran into Bob Gibson in 67, and probably no other team would have beaten him either. The best teams don’t always win.

But now you’re all about system over results. Results tell you the ‘67 Red Sox didn’t win…

I live with two Cubs’ fans. One her whole life and the other just joining the ranks this year. No fans used to embrace their Perennial Underdog status more than Cubs’ fans…
