Who here wasn't exhausted watching JD flail away at low and outside two-strike sliders. He's obviously enjoying a change-of-scenery, and it can't be because the NL West doesn't have access to the same book on him that we futile fans do...

Career high 31.3% k rate for JD this year. He's looking ok right now, but I don't know how long he'll be able to keep it up.

Home OPS at LAD: 753

604 OPS in Aug and time on the IL.

Turner has almost caught him in OPS+ (125 to 124.)

He's now just .012 behind in OPS.

wRC+

127 Turner (T28th)

126 JD (32nd)

124 Casas (T37th)

Turner has been as advertised. He has done well, hit in the clutch, and is having a good season, worth the signing.

So far it's all working pretty good of late for Chaim, Reyes, Urias, Turner, Wong have all been contributing. The staff is coming through for them too.

This list of ow cost additions that have failed or failed badly is a long one under Bloom's tenure with the Sox. It was an area he was supposed to be good at, but even the best have plenty of failures.

Here are some lower cost players who did okay or better for us, considering the money or cost in acquiring them being rather low.

Pillar (FA)

Arroyo (Waivers)

Munoz & Puello (FAs)

Pivetta (trade)

Whitlock (Rule 5)

Renfroe (FA)

Ottavino (basically for nothing)

Y Rios (for cash)

Schwarber (A Ramirez trade)

Robles (trade)

T Shaw (Waivers)

Iggy (SEPT FA)

Robles

Schreiber (Waivers)

Refsnyder (FA)

Wacha ($7M bargain)

R Hill ($5M bargain)

Strahm (FA)

McGuire (and dumped Diekman)

Tapia

Bernardino (Waivers)

Reyes (for cash)

Urias (trade)

Players Bloom acquired who struggled with us, but then improved after leaving:

Springs

Perez

TBD

Z Kelly (FA)

W Abreu/ E Valdez (Vaz trade)

C Rosier & M Ferguson (Groome trade)

W Mills (trade)

Nick Robertson (Kike trade)

Barraclough (MiFA)

Jacques (MiRule 5)

I'm sure I missed some.

I'm sure some feel a name or two don't belong on this "Okay to good" list.

Just like that, our 2B slot seems to be okay for 2024 with Urias and Reyes. Hardly cost much at all, although urias may make more than $4M, next year, on his final arb year.

He did well with the Dodgers in the playoffs.

He also has a higher career OPS in high leverage than not. (.854 high)

Turner is no fluke.

2023: .845 OPS

1.095 High Leverage

1.070 Late & Close

2022: .788 OPS

.861 High Leverage

.956 Late & Close

Career: .833

.854 High Leverage

.801 Late & Close

Just don't get me to admit it's a "sustainable skill."

Spotrac shows that he has a 4th ARB year as he reached Super Two status.

Urias has a history, but Reyes shocked all of us. Hell, he sold to us by the A's for peanuts!

JD could have played some LF when Turner was DH’ng and Turner could have played 1st when Casas was slumping and some second base when we were rolling out garbage to that position. They could have both been in the lineup for many games and had ample time to rest their old bones. They could have passed on Yoshida and put that money toward pitching.

I really don’t think $7 million dollars extra was stopping them from getting better pitching if they wanted. They could have done much better than Kluber for about what Kluber got.

They just made a s*** decision on who to add to the rotation this last offseason.

Agreed. It would have been interesting had we bid a little more and gotten Eflin, but then again, he got hurt.

There is no guarantee we'd have done better by spending a little more, or even a lot more.

$10M/1 Kyle Gibson

$12M/1 Clevinger

$13M/1 Syndergaard

$7.5 x 2 Seth Lugo

$8.5 x 2 J Lyles

$9.5 x 2 Smyly

$20M/1 Kershaw

$12.5x 2 Heaney, Manaea & Stripling

$13M x 2 Quintana

$6.5Mx 4 Wacha (with opt out)

$17M x 2 Nate

$13M x 3 T Anderson

$13.3Mx3 Z Eflin

$21M x 3 Bassitt

$17M x 4 Taillon

$18M x 4 TWalker

$15M x 5 Senga

We were never going to sign Verlander, Rodon or deGrom, but 2 of 3 gave nothing.

Figure out how many of these deals ended up being good ones? Some started out great, but now the guy is on the IL.

What were the odds of hitting gold or even silver or bronze?

How many of those did better than Kluber?

Every time I compliment Bloom, the Sox immediately turn to s***...so with that said, Fire Bloom!

That seems to be our M.O.

We do good for a while, and we start believing, and they fall flat on their face.

They do badly, and we come to within a millimeter of giving up, and the rip off a 4 game win streak.

(Does this mean we now win 4 straight?)

Barring big turnarounds, both of Bloom's big dollar acquisitions, Story and Yoshida, appear to be busts.

Wow! Calling Yoshida a bust already if he doesn’t turn things around? I haven’t even gone that far.

This is the mark of a .500 team. This has been said all season long.

I know, I seem to be leading the way on this, and believe me, I'm not happy to be doing so.

Everyone was all excited even the players after sweeping the listless, hapless Yankees, but it was, and is the same team that lost 2 out of 3 to Washington. The Yankees at this point are actually worse than the Red Sox were last year.

He has turned it around with the bat before, but he’s getting more exposed in the OF. Not to graceful leaping at the wall the other night, or going after the ball that got stuck in the light. To me bringing JT back is a must, so they could be stuck with him in the OF for awhile.

It's not just that. He has stopped drawing walks and is striking out more. Reportedly he's wearing down from the travel schedule. None of this points to better things ahead.

We've been above .500 way more than at .500 or below, but your point is well-taken. It's the same for teams barely better than .500, too.
