One problem with spending elsewhere is that many of the best FAs are SSs.

There are precious few solid pitchers without health or long term production issues.

Only Judge and Nimmo look like serious upgrades for our OF, and Judge is a pipedream for Sox fans.

Maybe we can trade for a salary dump that allows us to add a solid SP'er- like with the Marlins by taking on Garcia's OF salary, or take a huge rsik b y taking on Strasburg's enormous contract in hopes he can stay healthy, while getting them to give us some young talent for the effort.

It's a tough call.

So apparently the grass is alway greener.

If people think Sale is unreliable, not sure Strasburg figures to be an adequate replacement.

Strasburg still has 4 years $140mill left on his deal, which is basically Sales’s entire contract jammed into one fewer year. Not to mention, as much as I rip Sale for only throwing 48 IP in the last 3 seasons, Strasburg had only thrown THIRTY!!

I am not sure I can hard pass hard enough on Strasburg. No Strasburg. Not even at gunpoint…

I'm not for getting Strasburg, unless the Nats paid a big chunk or his deal and or included some young players in the package.

I'm not for adding more injury prone pitchers. I just raised his name as an example on how to acquire young talent that is not on the FA market.

There is room for a couple deals.

I'd like to get Snell. I'm not sure the Padres want to trade him, and the 1 year of control is not what I had in mind.

They’llbe much more willing to trade Snell once they come to San agreement with Soto, long term or not. Sox can then extend him on their own terms…

I'm not so sure $16M is all that great, either. I like Snell.

What makes you think San Diego wants to trade him? They're in their window and have been spending freely.

If SD signs Soto long term with their other 2 huge contracts what’s another $16M for Snell?

Pretty much. And if you're going to be paying all that money to Tatis, Soto and Machado, you better have some pitching too.

I don’t think MLB owners casually throw strong $16mill as casually as fans do…

They do have pitching and I suspect they will be paring some salary. Snell is my hopeful from them, but maybe they deal Darvish. They just extended Musgrove so I assume he is their keeper. They also might want to try to keep Cleavinger and have arb cases pending for Josh Hader and (I think) Jake Cronenworth. Plus holes at 1b, LF and CF . And they traded best prospects who play those positions…

No they don’t. No owner does…

You worry about it then, because I’m not. I’m for locking up Bogey, and Raffy, and then going out, and sign Judge, and the Trumpet Man closer from the Mets. If the Red Sox are going to charge those high ticket prices make it worth going to Fenway to watch unlike this year. Let’s go!

I hope you are not "worrying" about all that happening, because you'll be in for a big disappointment.

What kind of eye testing is this?

LOL

I saw all I wanted to see. Bello has lots of promise, but I think he needs more consistency before he can be counted on as a top of a rotation starter.

Way to defend your point about the limitless spending of Padres’ ownership!

Also you should probably prepare to be disappointed if that’s your Sox wish list. Devers and Bogaerts are the most likely, but I’m not even sure how likely they are…

LOL

His eye test is largely limited to checking RBI totals and regurgitating Tony Massaroti talking points ;)

What about a trade for Rodon?

I don't know, it's only one year with an AAV of $22 mill.

You'd have to sign him to an extension to make it worth it.

Rodon has an opt out he’s almost certain to exercise. He’s going to be a free agent.

He is expected to opt out, but he is the ultimate Buyer Beware free agent pitcher whose injury history is as long as all of the other MLB pitchers combined…

That might still put you over the cap and missing 3 starting pitchers….assuming Sale is healthy that’s 3 more needed.

Judge ain’t happening.

JH should be pissed that this is what he’s paying $200M+ for. Think he’s patting Bloom on the back, and saying a job well done?

Reading between some lines from Pete Abraham's "conversation with Chaim Bloom..."

Bloom: “Not every problem is solved by writing a check or making a trade. A lot of it comes from within."

Poster: talksox is fully prepared to pine for free agents, concoct deals on Baseball Trade Values, and see none of those proposals actually occur. But if Seabold and Winckowski make the 2023 starting rotation...

Bloom: "Because of having the flexibility that we have financially, we may be able to use that in certain ways to help our bullpen."

Poster: Can one of those "certain ways" please involve spending on good relievers once or twice? Comment on another forum said Cora and Bloom both want a dollar, but Cora wants it in quarters, while Bloom wants 100 pennies. No one complained about nickels and dimes.

Bloom (when asked if the offseason hinges on Bogaerts and Devers): “Certainly the perception will be that. Emotionally we’re going to feel that for sure."

Poster: Bye-bye Bogey. Too many people discussing X this week are using derivatives of the word emotion -- as in sad emotions. Not one is saying get ready to celebrate.

Bloom: "I can’t say what will happen with Raffy right now. But every player has a right to make choices."

Poster: And every fan has the right to choose not to buy tickets.

Well done, and don’t forget that Bloom is still looking for that third option at the fork in the road. Stay tuned to see if he finds it.

A variation of the old joke.

Bloom was hired to take over the Rex Sox as GM. Dombrowski, who was stepping down met with him privately and presented him with three numbered envelopes. “Open these if you run into serious trouble,” he said.

Well, three months later win totals were still way down and Bloom was catching a lot of heat. He began to panic but then he remembered the envelopes. He went to his drawer and took out the first envelope. The message read, “Blame your predecessor.” Bloom called a press conference and explained that Dombrowski had left him with a real mess and it was taking a bit longer to clean it up than expected, but everything was on the right track. Satisfied with his comments, the press – and Fans – responded positively.

Another 3 months went by and the Sox continued to struggle. Having learned from his previous experience, Bloom quickly opened the second envelope. The message read, “Reorganize.” So he traded key people, brought up rookies and cut costs everywhere he could. This he did and the Fans, and the press, were hopeful about his efforts.

Three months passed and the Sox were clearly worse than before. Bloom had to figure out how to get through another series of severe criticisms. Boom went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope. The message said, “Prepare three envelopes.”
