Look what the average Joe makes!

If the average Joe can afford $10 for a pack of cigarettes and $75 for a tank of gas, they can afford $60 to go to Fenway! A ticket plus a hot dog and a beer is cheaper than filling that gas tank!

People are nuts, because they go ahead and buy that beer no matter how expensive or how watered-down it is.

That's the actual principle on which the sports and entertainment businesses thrive: people are nuts.

Do you really think they water down the beer? I just think they sell lite beer or crappy IPA's. I think the plastic cups probably cheapen the experience as well.

I'm sure you're right. I just threw that in for effect. Also, Canadians are always joking about American beer being weaker than theirs.

Molson is 5.0.

Labatt's Blue is 5.0.

Budweiser is 5.0.

Coors Banquet is 5.0.

Good point on the clear plastic, which in the summer sun warms the beer faster than you can drink it.

As for the keg content at Fenway, we used to call it Charles Light, after the Charles River.

Yep, it's a cultural myth.

If anything, the Canadian beers had a stronger flavor than what US brewers had at that point.

The beer drinking experience greatly differs when having a beer in a chilled glass vs a can vs a bottle vs a plastic cup.

I'd rate receptacles thusly: glass mug with handle, wide-mouth beer glass, ceramic stein, bottle, insulated stainless steel coffee mug (incognito), wooden mug, mouth under open tap... plastic.

Glasses above 20 oz are the bottom tier for me.

Especially ones like: https://www.amazon.com/Custom-Personalized-Bey-Berk-glass-Cambridge/dp/B0956P6TV3/ref=asc_df_B0956P6TV3/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=507812309442&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6874220846075010884&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9012428&hvtargid=pla-1465587228375&psc=1

I have a 35 oz beer mug at home that my wife got to commemorate $1 pizza nights when we lived in El Segundo. It's the most useless thing ever.

That just looks suitable for breaking or at least chipping. I still prefer a handle on pints, for a better grip when having more than one.

Of course you don’t need to fill 3 extra gas tanks if you’re bringing your wife and two kids with you in the car…

The Rays make 82M a year just from TV revenue. My guess is that tickets and in person revenue varies greatly from market to market. Maybe stadium expenses are treated like marketing expenses for the tv show?

Of course it does, and of course all those expenses matter to owners and the bottom line. I am not saying salaries do not affect the bottom line. Of COURSE they do. But ticket prices? those are still going to be determined by one over-riding factor "how to maximize the take at the gate." And that is going to be the same calculation no matter what the other expenses are (salaries, upkeep, operating costs, marketing etc.). That's why, say, here in LA, it will cost you over $50 to get into a Lakers game, whereas it can be as low as $6 for the CLippers in the same venue. Obviously this has nothing to do with salaries (which are pretty much the same), but only with what fans are willing to pay. The reason it costs $300 (is that correct?) to get a monster seat or box seat at Fenway is because if you don't pony up that money, someone else will. (Of course, with a new CBA looming, owners are pushing the 'look what players make today as opposed to you!', to try to deflect attention away from the plantation.)

Empty truck gas tank at 25 gallons X $3.00/gal = $75

It might be very much like their last one.

Neither side seems willing to make a proposal which cedes any ground in the negotiations. All or nothing means no deal, so compromise will be needed by both sides to break the deadlock. A salary floor and a slightly rising luxury tax might be an area for agreement. I wonder if MLB is worried about TV revenues diminishing such that additional spending could cut into their profits.

I'm just responding to what you said above. Your words: "The players don't control the ticket prices, but if ticket prices were directly related to their salaries, how many players would be willing to take discounts so that fans could pay less for tickets?" The answer, of course, is none, just as it would be if you and I were asked to take a pay cut for the benefit of our bosses and clients/customers/students.

(Maybe we're making the same point and are just mis-reading our comments!)

The point I was trying to make is that while owners are deemed to be greedy and unwilling to cut ticket prices for fans, players would be just as greedy and unwilling to cut ticket prices for fans if it meant a salary cut for themselves.

Look what people pay to go to a concert, now.

Talk about sick!

Look what movie stars make.

I really wanted to go see Elton John on his farewell tour. Until I saw how much the tickets were.

Right or wrong, I'm sure this is a big reason why I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for the players in this fight.

Beer tastes like crap no matter what you drink it out of.

Until you look at the owner's net worth and/or income.
