I’m not up to “like” but I’m not quite at “hate to the point of panic.”

Like I said, sometimes he just knows something about these jalopies. I’m more in the “let’s see how this plays out” phase…

I am not panicking, but I am not liking and they are all 3 broken down jalopies.

I will say I don’t think anyone is dazzled.

The only highlight to me is it looks like they intend to keep both Houck and Whitlock as the high leverage guys in the bullpen. But even that’s not as certainty…

Rule 5 Draft Cancelled.

Lock out in place.

@KyleAGlaser

Just got it confirmed: As a result of the lockout, there will be no major league portion of the Rule 5 draft. There will still be a minor league Rule 5 draft.

According to the Miami Herald, the Red Sox thought they had a trade done for Pirates catcher Jacob Stallings, but the Marlins sweetened their offer to get him. Very interesting.

Man!

I've made over a dozen BTV trades for Stallings.

He's supposed to be one of the best defensive catchers in MLB, and apparently he does well with maximizing the results of the staff,

The lockout apparently includes a blackout on current content at MLB.com:

You may notice that the content on this site looks a little different than usual. The reason for this is because the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the players and the league expired just before midnight on Dec. 1 and a new CBA is currently being negotiated between the owners and

All the speculation on potential Sox moves came to naught, with only a few head scratcher moves and none of which appear to make the Sox better. According to Bloom, we pursued a number of FAs and trades but were outbid, which makes me believe we weren't that serious. Maybe the plan was to make a strong bid in 2023 all along. Now we have a lockout, which could last until the Summer. There really will be little to talk about until the lockout ends unless of course we want to argue with each other over trifles. Time to go on vacation.

I think they give one of them a chance to start, I just don't think they are willing the assume the risk of both of them being in the rotation. My guess is Whitlock becomes a starter because of the upside he shows there.

We might have come real close on some signings. Word is, we cam real close to trading for Stallings, but got outbid at the last moment.

The rumor that we were a finalist on Baez gives me hope our budget is not set at below the old tax line, but that remains to be seen. There is evidence that indicates we will not be spending large, this year, too.

Bloom says we are still looking for pen and RH'd bat additions (probably OF or 2B), so maybe a splash will happen, later.

All-in-all, it does appear we have not gotten better, and at the risk of sounding like a Bloom apologist, the optimistic view can be summed up like this:

We lost ERod, but ERod was not all that great for us in 2021.

We lost Ottavino- same as ERod.

The other losses can be viewed as addition by subtraction, but the depends on how well our new additions do.

IP/ERA in 2021

158/4.74 ERod

137/4.87 Richards

114/4.74 Perez

62.0/4.21 Ottavino

37.1/6.03 Andriese

25.0/3.60 Robles

24.1/ 3.70 Rios

20.0/4.95 Workman

+ over 30 IP from various scrubs

We can expect more IP from Sale, Brasier and Houck- maybe more from Whitlock, Taylor, DHern, Davis and perhaps Pivetta. Then, we added Wacha, Hill & Paxton.

PA/ OPS

572/.816 Renfroe

271/.567 Marwin

168/.957 Schwarber

136/.497 Cordero (the same OPS as JBJ)

127/.597 Santana

82/.549 Chavis

64/.915 Iggy

48/.843 Shaw

+over 50 PAs from scrubs

We added JBJ and look to add a RH'd bat.

The offense looks worse, on paper. The staff looks hard to gauge, based on 2021 numbers.

I thinks so, too, but maybe the first choices going into ST'ing are: Eovaldi, Sale, Pivetta, Wacha and Hill. (Wacha might be used in long relief.)

I don't understand why it was cancelled.

I'm clinging to a rotation of Sale, Eovaldi, Pivetta, Hill and Wacha as the plan.

I still think this team needs to add at least one more reliever (Archie Bradley? Oliver Drake? Trade candidate?) and a starting LF (Bryant? Conforto? Eddie Rosario?) and maybe a LHH 1B to pair with Dalbec (Brad Miller?)

Now that I have mentioned those names, all of whom are good fits, I think we can all agree that none of them will be signed once the off-season continues...

And not at least postponed?

The problem with cancelling the Rule 5 draft is it really doesn't enhance the owners' agenda (and arguably hurts it) since the MLBPA never really cared about those unprotected minor league scrubs trying to steal their jobs anyway...

A shot, yes- in ST'ing, but if Wacha and Hill look good and ready, I think we may start Whitlock in the pen.

Yes, I think Talksox poster guessing success rates are going to be pretty low as long as Bloom's here.

And let the usual attrition take care of the rest.

Whitlock's innings would have to be limited no matter what they do.

At this point, I think the whackier the scenario, the more I am likely to embrace it as realistic...

So maybe we trade Bogaerts for some guy who was very overpaid in 2021 but has upside, plus 2-3 prospects...

What's his max likely to be?

If we look like we will make the playoffs, they may want to "save" 10-20 IP for that.

I'm thinking 130-145.

Xander and Raffy for Mookie and Price

Going into spring training I don't really think there's ever a set 5. You have a few guys you know will start and most teams have competition for the back end of the rotation. Hill/Whitlock/Wacha are all going to be competing for that 5th spot, and the way things work out you need more than 5 starters anyways.

I think the Sox want Whitlock to be the guy but they're building depth. Injuries happen, guys regress, so you can never have enough pitching.
