Some teams don't care about spending . And some do. That's the difference between getting one of the best closers of all time like Jansen or a ham and egger like Robles.

Huge differences all winter long.

Clear spenders.

Clear tankers.

Clear do-nothings.

Let's see if the Sox land Trevor. That will change the Story of this off season.

It will change the genre to a mystery novel.

Current state per my best guess

C: Vazquez

1b: Dalbec. Presumably Casas at some point.

2b: E Hernandez? Arroyo once hurt himself catching a throw. I think he’s good, but there are legitimate durability concerns. (But he might fit in with a platoon with JBJ.)

SS: Bogaerts

3b: Devers

LF: Duran? Conforto is still available!

CF: JBJ, with Kike stepping in vs LHP and Arroyo taking 2b.

RF: Verdugo

DH: JDM

Rotation: Eovaldi, Pivetta, Hill, Wacha, Houcklock.

Eovaldi’s health is paramount here.

BP: Houclock part 2, Barnes, Brasier, Diekman, Strahm, Taylor, Sawamura and maybe Davis? Pretty left-handed bullpen here. D Hernandez doesn’t fix this. Maybe Seabold?

Not sure who is joining Plawecki and Arroyo on the bench, but an outfielder might be nice…

Hey I'm back.

Um, did you forget James Paxton?

The Red Sox added a proven starting pitcher who can bolster them for the 2022 stretch run and perhaps beyond, signing lefty James Paxton to a one-year deal that includes a two-year club option for the ‘23 and ’24 seasons. The club did not announce financial terms, but a source

The Braves don’t care about spending?

They let one of their most popular players walk away in free agency over barely more than they just spent on Jansen.

(Also interesting side note, the Red Sox have outspent the Braves in free agency this off-season.)

That is interesting, considering the Sox haven't even paid anyone as much as Atlanta did to Eddie Rosario -- a mere $9M AAV for the NLCS MVP. But at least Bloom leads all chiefs in stockpiling pitchers who either weren't in the majors the past two years or are recovering from operations.

Actually I believe Hill is getting $9.5mill…

Meanwhile, an average righthanded hitting outfielder like Tommy Pham still seems to fit the Sox... but he made $8.9M last year, and would have to take an Ottavino paycut to prove he actually is better than JBJ in a big market (like he claimed a few years back).

I was thinking more about position players, like when they traded Beni because he was due for $6 or $7M, and just traded Hunter because he was due Beni bucks. And now I need to walk my dogs, Beni and Hunter...

Pham was also horrible last year. Although some of that can probably be attributed to getting stabbed in the off-season.

I do think Pham would be a smart short term depth piece. Right now, it looks like Duran is starting and that will be great of he hits. But what is the contingency plan if he doesn’t?

You don't think Verdugo-Kike-JBJ is the projected opening day outfield?

Opening day? Who knows? That’s one game.

Do you think that outfield plus Arroyo at 2b is expected to start 140-150 games?

Now if the Sox actually do sign Story, that outfield alignment looks more likely…

Biggest one being who starts at 2b.

I have my doubts that Gold Glove winner and fan-favorite Yolmer Sanchez is going to emerge as the starter…

Yolmer was my son's first favorite player because he wore white goggles on his baseball card.

He seems like a reasonable Plan B. Or does he have one of those "opt-out by a certain date if not on the big team" deals?

To me, that is plan A, despite the flaw of the fragile Arroyo playing 2B, everyday.

Duran or Dalbec in LF, when Kike plays 2B. Verdugo in RF & JBJ in CF is the rest of plan B.

Let the old saying "he's asking for $____" be laid to rest.

Maybe he WAS asking for too much, and no one would pay it, so his agent advised him to take a deal like this one. He can opt out after 2022 and try again.

We've spent over $41M LUX Tax on 6 FA players (Paxton, Wacha, Hill, Diekman, Strahm & Robles) and JBJ.

We added another $16.4M taking Vaz's option and extending Barnes.

Then, the arb raises.

We've spent, this winter, but like last winter, it's been sread out over many players (almost all pitchers.)

I had hoped we were looking beyond continued farm and lower 40man roster slot rebuilding, but sadly, it appears we have not... yet.
