Devers is a cornerstone of this organization and should be extended. Hang’em Chaim just needs to sign the kid and end the suspense.

It might be the right time, but I think we'll make him a fair offer, before he gets too worried.

Not me. I don't want real sports to be like fantasy sports. I want to follow human beings and see how the same humans do year to year. Thus even after players are gone, I will tend to follow their careers (like Mookie, Boggs, Roger, Lester, Manny [OF COURSE!], Ellsbury, Eck ... ).

I totally agree. I also realize that the clock won't be turned back anytime soon but I do think that not having players to follow for an extended time has led to a certain amount of disinterest in professional sports in general.

Wish we could go back to the good ole days when players like Tiant, Lee, Lynn, Burleson and Fisk we allowed to retire on the team that brought them up...err... wait a minute...

With some of those players it very possibly could have happened if the team was not being mismanaged at that time.

But how come there's money than ever in MLB if there's less interest?

I know exactly what you and others are saying, I really do. I hated it when Mookie was traded, and I wish we would keep Bogey and Devers. But it's a two-way street, because these guys want enormous amounts of money to stick around.

I saw an interesting piece about how disappointed Chipper Jones was with Freddie Freeman for bolting to the Dodgers after the Braves made him a pretty substantial offer.

It should have happened.

My point was it seems like there is some sort of hint of nostalgia about keeping our best players longer, like we used to do a better job, "back in the day."

I was just pointing out that there were periods where it was much worse than the last 2 decades, but of course, before Curt Flood, there was a long period where more players often spent their entire careers with one team.

Good points.

You know me: I was the one saying offer Betts $400M/12 and am currently the leader of the "Dever Forevers Fan Club," but you are right. $30M a year is a lot for any one player. In theory, spending $10M on 3 is much less risky and allows for shorter term deals. However, that feeds into the revolving door concept and the lack of long term attachments to to favorite players on our team.

It's like a lose-lose scenario.

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

You're exactly right, and you can go back even before free agency. Reggie Smith being a prime example.

George Scott, too. (Wow, both happened to be black.)

Man, the Dodger player budget looks sick!

16 players over $7M lux tax dollars.

10 are over $12M.

8 over $17M.

5 over $21M.

4 over $27M.

3 over $30M.

Well, come to think of it, the ill-advised jettisoning of top talent all started with that Ruth guy.

Smalls: “Who’s that?”

Ham: “What?”

Narrator: “I had no idea who they were talking about.”

Ham: “What did he say?”

Bertram: “What, were you born in a barn, man?”

Yeah-Yeah: “Yeah, yeah. What planet are you from.”

Narrator: “There was no way I could let them know.”

Squints: “You’ve never heard of the Sultan of Swat?”

Smalls: “Oh, yeah. The Great Bambino! Of course. I thought you said The Great Bambi.”

Babe Ruth in Boston was nothing but an old-timey version of Big Papi: three rings. Give me Harry Hooper, the greatest winner in Red Sox history, with four World Series rings.

Ah, forget it; Hooper also batted lefty. Chaim knows we need a righty-swinging outfielder -- someone who can actually hit, before Opening Day.

Dustin Pedroia also has 3 World Series rings. That’s also the number of games he played in 2018…

I was only speaking for myself but I think it has something to do with the strange times we are living in. More traffic than ever before as the price of a gallon of gas continues to rise. There appears to be a lot more money out there than we have ever seen before. As Fenway continues to for the most part sell out, what is the cost of a ticket? Only in America i guess.

The money baseball makes is directly tied to fan interest. The price of gas is not based on the volume of traffic (although if it was, more traffic would mean more expensive gas)…

My point was to simply say that there is an incredible amount of money in this country and much of it seems to be wasted. Prices of anything tend to go up or down based on the simple theory of supply and demand. Works for baseball as much as anything else.

There’s still a massive difference in people “wasting money” by commuting to work and spending it on baseball games. Was your point that people who didn’t like baseball games were wasting money going to them anyway?

MLB made a record $10billion in 2019. They still have interested fans…

I’ve theorized all along that the Sox would get a RHH outfielder to platoon with Bradley and to, well, just be an actual fourth outfielder on the bench.

Pham signed with the Reds. The better remaining outfielders on the market (Conforto, Goodwin, Eaton) are all left-handed hitters. Certainly (with the exception of Conforto) they could be good backups, but not platoon partners.

It looks like Bradley will start more than even I realized…

I think Duran hit lefties in the minors pretty well, so maybe he plays vs some lefties.

(Yes, it would have made more sense for our 4th OF'er to be a LHB'er.

Yep, Bloom finally splurges on Story at $23+M per, but won't sign another legit righty bat to replace Renfroe's -- not for a guy like Pham who costs $7.5M (what the Reds just gave him). That's a similar amount to what some data valued Renfroe would also fetch (more than double than last year), and why some speculate Bloom traded him in the first place.

I'm not exactly sure what my point was now I guess. I would find it unlikely that most people going to baseball games don't like them first of all and secondly i guess that much of the traffic I see on the roads today has nothing to do with commuting to work. In general I guess I wished that more people realized how fortunate we are to live in the country we live in thus the expression Only in America.

No, it isn't, especially now that the child tax credit payments have stopped.

No doubt for many a benefit like that was very welcome I will say though that I know many and I mean many people who received some of the "free money" being floated around who actually tried to send it back to the government because they simply didn't need it. More to the point I was implying that with gas and oil prices being what they currently are there are many families struggling in the northeast. Watching the huge amounts of money being dumped into the entertainment world doesn't impress everyone.

Oh well though life goes on and I'm ready to get back to baseball. Our lineup with the addition of Story has some great potential.
