I think this has to be a low scoring game for the Sox to have a chance. The Sox bats for the most part have been having a slumber party for the last week, or so against not your best pitching staffs, and Cole is a lot better than that. Of course this is a lot different atmosphere, and Cole has been knocked around a little bit lately, so anything can happen, and probably will.

Sox also hit much better at home.

I think way to much is being made of how many pitchers, and who is on the roster. This is a one game playoff, and not like the last 6 games of the season when a lot of arms in the bullpen were running on fumes, and could only go 1 inning at a time. If EO can’t at least get into the 6th inning I think the Sox are in trouble. Whitlock being back is huge, and good for a couple of innings, so I don’t see a lot of pitches being used in this game.

Agree--obviously. It's just one game and 12 pitchers is way, way more than enough. Also agree on the value of Whitlock and love that Taylor is also on the roster, but I also like having Pivetta and ERod handy.

Or let me put it this way. I could be wrong, but I think that with the return of Whitlock and Taylor and the availability of Houck, ERod, and Pivetta, the Yankees big advantage in the bullpen diminishes significantly.

I want Eovaldi to go 5 or 6 or more innings only because I think he has great stuff. But, if he needs to come out early, I don't think that's a disaster.

Shaw will be one PH vs. a righty. But who is the next bat off the bench? Arauz? Duran? I'd think the former would play D after the latter pinch ran for Arroyo (not saying his leg is still iffy, just that Duran is faster). Maybe Wong is here for extras in case they pinch run for Vazquez -- despite his SBs.

If it's in extras, I'd pinch run for Vaz because he may be the worst baserunner on the team.

But he leads the team in stolen bases!!!

And his 2021 success rate of .667 is the same as Mookie Betts's 2021 success rate.

I don't know which part of this conversation is the saddest:

Vaz leads the Sox in SB's or Mookie has a .667 success rate.

We hit .852 off him, this year, as a team overall.

.964 at Fenway in 3 games (72 PAs), including 5 HRs and 4 2Bs.

I'd quote Meatloaf, but he hired Phil Rizzuto to rap on one of his records.

Ned Martin might note the board's loquacity today is but a mask of pre meditation.

Bucky Dent will be in attendance. Must be nice to be a professional TROLL. He should be booed beyond belief.

I'm also inviting Mark Bellhorn, Orlando Cabrera, Curtis Leskanic, Brock Holt, Eduardo Nunez and Steve Pearce.

NY papers are writing that the pressure is on the Skanks as opposed the the Red Sox who just happen to be oh you know.. the HOST of the WC game with a nationwide fan base. The reasoning? Because the Yankees always win. This courtesy of the NY Post. Yes folks... “the Yankees always win.” Just in case you need a reminder of what entitlement means. Met fans actually have to deal with trash like this in the same city. Lol.

The pressure is on the Yanks because they were expected to win the division and are now fighting for their lives in a WC game. The Sox weren't considered viable contenders.

There are so many good jokes to make but I don't want to get political... instead, how about a fact: there is not one single kid in my son's entire elementary school that has been alive when the Yankees won a World Series. Many of his friends are Yankee fans who only know their team has lost its last game of the season, every year they've watched.

It’s hilarious isn’t it? My son is in Elementary school too and wears a sox hat. The other day he told me that a Yankee fan heckled him and said “why are you a Red Sox fan? Yankees are better.” My son simply replied with.. “I like the Red Sox”. This is out in California where both teams are very well represented with fans. I run into Sox fans out here on a regular basis. But the entitlement is outrageous. How can anyone question why that team is hated so much.

Not sure whether a WC game could be considered as PO time but it certainly feels like that regardless.

Sox were better in the h2h match up. Time to prove it. Let's go!

I'm fine with the list because it's only 12 pitchers--way more than are needed for one game--and because I think Richards, et al deserve the honor of being on the roster.

If Cora uses as many as six relievers, I would expect to see Whitlock, Houck, Pivetta, ERod, Sawamura, and Taylor. I would not use Richards, Ottavino, or Davis, but might use Barnes and/or Hernandez.

Sawamura and Hernandez on not on tonight's roster. They could and probably would be on a potential ALDS roster.

As would Sale and JDM , displacing some the irregulars , for the ALDS , if and when....

It all depends on which Nate shows up. We need at least 6 strong

In 2008, I was wearing my Sox hat in the Target in Manhattan Beach. A rando was walking behind me and said "do you hear the footsteps?" I looked at him and was just confused. He said "do you the hear the footsteps?" "Uh, what?" "The Yankees, we're coming for you." Shut the f*** up nerd.

I dated a girl from Brooklyn in 2003 and not once did anyone say anything about my Sox hat. But move to CA and people won't shut up over it.

Half the people that wear Yankees apparel don’t even watch baseball. Ask them a baseball question and they get a weird look on their face like you’re invading their space.

You're right. I assumed they were and did not carefully check mvp 78's post on page 1. In any case, I trust Cora's judgment and believe he will have plenty of good choices tonight.
