I still think the big reshaping of the roster will come after next year when there will be lots of money coming off the books, and even more if Bogey walks. Then there is still the big question on what happens with Raffy.

I think everybody feels the same way about all that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if one of Bogaerts or Martinez starts 2022 in another uniform…

I agree with all your points but will be shocked if Chaim Bloom does. It should be exciting watching GMs trying to jam three months worth of hot stove into one week. Some deals and signings may happen fast, because they were already agreed upon behind the scenes and just waiting to be announced.

The Sox need Carlos Rodon just as much as they need Suzuki. Can a $100 mil land both? Beyond Rodon, there really aren't other free agent pitchers I'm interested in at the prices they will demand. Solid young pitchers will certainly change teams, but at the cost of prospects.

While I see the obvious logic behind Rodon, there are even more obvious reasons that make Suzuki a better choice…

Correction: Cot's presently has us at 207.7 million, 22.3 million under the threshold.

You have to look at the CBT numbers on the right.

Indeed.

Makes that JBJ trade even itchier.

BTV accepted Bogey, Barnes & $8M for Urquidy.

We'd save $24M on the lux tax for '22 and $5M in '23, if we gave $4M each year.

That fives us enough cash to sign Correa and Suzuki, although I'm against signing Correa.

BTV accepted:

Bogey, Duran & Groome

for

Abel, Vierling, O'Hoppe & Segura

(We save $6M on the lux tax in 2022 and have a $17M on Segura for 2023 w a $1M buyout)

f*** YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! There will be baseball!

An attempt will be made in NYC to field a team that looks like they are playing baseball.

One thing this lockout really hurt was Bloom's ability to dumpster dive and move players. He is gonna have to go warp speed now. With a normal offseason, I thought there would be absolutely no way Bogey suits up in Boston in 2022. Now, it's a virtual certainty

No so fast.

Besides, dumpster diving is always a an option.

Right. Because Bloom will be the only GM with limited time.

Also I do doubt no GMs worked out anything with each other “in principle”…

They will attempt toplay baseball. There is a question as to whether they will succeed

A shortstop would be a big step in the right direction…

Not to mention GM and agents talking secretly.

Do you think anyone will trade for Bogey for just 1 year unless they are willing to shell out millions in a multi year contract?

It has been done before, but my guess is anyone who trades for Bogey will want or think they can lock him up for longer.

(I doubt HOU or PHI would make the trades I suggested.)

Why do you hate the concept of buying prospects so much?

Seems like you don't like building the farm so much if it might hurt the 2022-2023 teams a little.

Head-scratcher.

Sure. It’s happened before.

Philadelphia is an ideal landing spot. They can use. Bogaerts to buy time for Bryson Stott. (The Yankees are in a similar position with Volpe and Peraza, but I consider that less likely.).

An acquiring team might try to extend Bogaerts. And if they do, so? Bloom will probably only trade him if he gets a replacement now like Correa or Story, which would mean Bogaerts was gone anyway…

The cost of Correa just seems so anti-Bloom, especially with Mayer in the pipeline. More pressing 2022 priorities in order: a good reliever, another starter better than Wacha-Hill-1/2Paxton, a righthanded hitting outfielder, and a regular second baseman...

... unless Bloom knows Bogaerts refused to switch positions and is as good as gone; in that case, trading Xander to get anyone decent back takes on an almost Betts-like priority.

Posted
Well, Bloom can't use the "luxury tax issues" and "we're gonna suck this year anyway" as reasons to trade Bogey, so that makes it different from Betts.

If any big-money guy makes sense in Boston, it's really Kris Bryant. The Sox love versatility, and Bryant fits the job for '22 and beyond. He'd automatically become the needed righthanded power bat in the outfield. If Dalbec or Casas flop or are traded, Bryant can play first base. When JD leaves, Bryant can DH. If they decide not to re-sign Devers (or move him to first or DH), Bryant can play third.

Mayer shouldn’t be a factor. The Sox aren’t going to staff their 2022 roster to accommodate a kid who graduated high school in 2021.

We really don’t know what is anti-Bloom, since this is the first time he will have access to money..

The notion that the Sox should ignore shortstop because they have Mayer is an even greater stretch than saying the Sox should ignore pitchers because they have Bello…

Paying max dollars for a DH doesn't really make sense anymore.

Are you doing this for the savings? Segura is a 2b now.

It's the "buying" problem. He only wants to see "savings" against the cap rather than "spending."

Bogaerts said he's willing to switch positions.

I don't see the Sox signing Correa though. He can't stay healthy.

Kind of, but not quite. I think they should sign a SS, but probably not for 8-10 years like Correa wants.

The same thing is being discussed right now about the Yankees; NY has two top prospects that are shortstops... either or whom will be making around three-quarters of one million dollars in their first year instead of $30+ million.

I've said all along, this must be about the prospects, and that Bloom must see something, the prospect rankers don't see.

$12M in a lot of money. The $8M buyout for 2023 means JBJ will be here for 2023 as well.
