Are you doing this for the savings? Segura is a 2b now.

I'm figuring he can still play SS, of we put Kike in CF and he can play 2B, and we sign a SS to bridge to Mayer.

I've said all along, this must be about the prospects, and that Bloom must see something, the prospect rankers don't see.

$12M in a lot of money. The $8M buyout for 2023 means JBJ will be here for 2023 as well.

The prospect rankers all HATED the Yorke pick. So far, so good for Bloom.

He'll be 32 and is getting slower. I don't see him going back to SS. He's an aging, overpaid guy who doesn't make great contact. His hitting comps are Manny Margot, David Peralta and Odubel Herrera. As a replacement at SS? Pass.

@DukeCastiglione

Veteran @mlb player tells me and an MLB Official confirms. … unvaccinated players can’t play in Canada and under new CBA they will not be paid or receive service time for those games missed in Canada

So stop scratching the deceased equine's head.

The trade was not about him as the centerpiece on the return, in fact, he's the last guy on the list- in terms of value.

He was included to offset the financial cost to the other Phillies. The trade was about getting a young catcher, who is better than anyone in our current system, getting a RH'd hitting OF'er who may be better than Duran and a very nice pitching prospects- all while saving money that might allow us to sign a better FA.

Segura also fills a stop-gap role at SS or 2B.

I said it must be, not that I think those 2 prospects are worth $20M.

Correa wants 330M. He's not coming here.

He may not go anywhere at that price.

The guy gets hurt, a lot. I'm not seeing why he thinks he's worth Lindor or Seager money, both of whom I think were overpaid to begin with.

It's $20M minus the value provided by JBJ.

And it's Bloom's opinion of the prospects that counts. He's supposed to be able to outperform the market when it comes to valuing prospects.

Seager is not the measure of health either.

Seager is a fine player, but $325 mill is absurd, especially when you factor in the health concerns.

Minus the difference between JBJ and Renfroe, right?

Also, possibly a minus a minus only adds to the $20M.

That's the only anti-itch cream I see.

And it's enough for me, because I think he's a smart guy.

As always, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

If I had a choice, it'd be Correa over Seager. Seager is not worth 325.

The notion that the Sox should ignore shortstop because they have Mayer is an even greater stretch than saying the Sox should ignore pitchers because they have Bello…

Mayer will be 20 in December. Bogaerts and Devers were big leaguers at age 20, and regulars at 21... for Boston.

Mayer is already the Red Sox' most highly regarded all-around infield prospect in my lifetime, ahead of Nomar (#12 pick in '94 draft) and Moncada (all offense).

When is the earliest we might see Mayer with the big club?

The Sox didn’t promote Devers to Boston after 107 plate appearances in rookie ball…

This Bogaerts guy has been pretty durable.

He's durable and very productive. I'd keep him and Bogey around as the cornerstone of the franchise. Xander can still fake it at SS for a couple more years.

Posted
Bogaerts and Devers each played about 400 minor league games before playing in the majors.

Nomar only played about 200.

Mayer has 26 in the rookie league.

How many millions, and for how long are you willing to pay these two?

Fair enough. Soto played 122 games in the minors, Franco 215. Mayer may not make the bigs at age 20, but if he develops as advertised, would it be such a shocker if he has a cup of coffee before turning 22?

The bigger question is: does anyone think Bloom and Co. don't project lineups a few years into the future? And if they anticipate Mayer at short in '24 or '25, are they planning on breaking the bank for Correa and then asking him to move positions before he's even 30? Or do they just move Mayer to third and reacquire Stephen Drew?
