Verdugo is so good that you can't call the trade a disaster, in my opinion. Choose a less bad word :)

Verdugo is a good player, but he's a downgrade from Betts. If Downs or Wong doesn't pan out, it's not a good trade IMO.

Renfroe has a long enough record of success vs LHPs, and he is over .700, this year on that split, so we just need to put him in situations where he can be successful. I would not send him down. (Plus AAA has not started, so he won't be playing any games, if optioned.)

Cordero is a wildcard. To me, he should get a longer look, but the concern level is reaching the tipping point. Maybe once AAA starts, we can let him work out some issues there, but for now, start him vs some RHPs, and let Marwin play sometimes.

I know MiLB hasn't really ramped up, that's why I mentioned optioning in May in my first post.

From the other side, we may not want to call up players who have not been playing live games until about mid May.

Puello could roll out of bed and hit 700 OPS. C'mon man.

I said that and then checked that they have options. Duh. Would Puello look any worse than Franchy or Hunter right now? Does a healthy Danny Santana take one of their spots?

There is some growing chatter that Cordero may be demoted soon.

I can't help pointing out that Verdugo is outperforming Mookie so far in 2021.

Maybe they're just holding out for Santana to be ready?

There was no limited spending budget this offseason. They already reset last year.

Of course there was.

It's not always about resetting and returning to big spending. Our history shows more times going 2-3 years under the line than just one and dones.

@RedSox

Since the beginning of 2019, Rafael Devers leads MLB with 61 go-ahead or game-tying RBI.

The kid is the man.

soxprospects.com...

-Outfielder Danny Santana, seen by some as a potential big league callup if injury or performance required another outfielder, has agreed to extend his opt-out into May as the Boston Globe's Alex Speier reports. The original opt-out was set for April 30.

-After throwing 17 innings with a 0.53 ERA to end last season, Tanner Houck (pictured, right) was certainly getting noticed, and he has been solid to start 2021 with a 4.35 ERA and 1.35 WHIP after 10.1 innings over two starts and a relief appearance. Houck tells MassLive.com's Christopher Smith that the "light bulb finally flicked on" ($) when watching one of Chris Sale's bullpen sessions last spring training.

See you're agreeing with me. A disaster is say trading off your up & coming pitcher Derek Lowe and your up & coming catcher Jason Varitek to receive a horrible closer Heathcliff Slocumb.

Losing Betts was a disaster. Verdugo is a very good player. Betts is a HOF player.

Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek were hardly "up & coming" when the Seattle Mariners traded the pair to the Red Sox in July 1997.

Baseball America ranked Lowe No. 70 in 1993 and No. 63 in 1994 but had long since dropped Lowe from its Top 100 prospect rankings.

Baseball America ranked Varitek No. 51 in 1996 but dropped Varitek from its 1997 rankings because of the catcher's undistinguished performance.

Instead of "up & coming," the stock of Lowe and Varitek was dropping.

It's a cliche, but hindsight is 20/20. The trade worked out fabulously for the Red Sox and dismally for the Mariners.

Seattle fans take some comfort in that at the deadline the previous year the Mariners traded Darren Bragg for Jamie Moyer, who posted more WAR than Lowe or Varitek for his new team (and for his career).

Some context is needed.

We lost 60 games of Betts. Yes, a HOF player.

We gained 4 years of Verdugo.

5 years of Downs

5 years of Wong

$300M+ is budget space

60 games plus another 12 years that they should have signed him for.

What's the point in 5 years of Downs and Wong if we don't know if they'll even get to MLB?

Budget space??? You were saying that the budget was already restricted even after getting rid of Betts!

Mookie is a .240 hitter now.

He sucks. What would take to get Freidman to convince Bloom to take back Mookie and that 12-year albatross contract for such a small body due to break down (unlike Judge and Stanton)? LA would have to include young pitching, but would even May and Gonsolin get it done? BrudSTAAAAH? Maybe... those three... and Lux?

Mookie = too small

Judge and Stanton = too big
