The problem is that Henry made a deal with the devil when he hired DD. He brought in DD for the ring, got the ring and got the baggage that goes along with it. When you line up Theo, Ben, DD and Bloom, the odd man out is DD. His roster construction is antithetical to how the Sox had been previously built.

Thanks, Dave.

The ring itself was excellent. The attempt to keep the band together for another one really messed up the following season(s)...

Will be some time until we know if this was a good trade or a bad trade.

If Benintendi returns to 2018 form and Winckowski and the PTBNL's flame out in AA, then this will definitely be a bad trade.

And this is all far from a remote possibility...

What about all this happening and Codero out-hitting Beni's 2018?

In theory, there was no reason the 2019 team should have sucked so badly. The window DD built should have been from 2016 to 2019 or even 2020, even with a reset in there somewhere.

The Sox traded an outfielder in Benintendi who had a career OPS+ of 107 and acquired an outfielder in Renfroe with a career OPS+ of 106. And that is destroying the team?

Not to mention, in those two deals he also added another MLB outfielder and 4 prospects and did so without adding anything to the budget.

How again are these bad moves?

It's the totality of the turnover: Holt, Betts, Bradley, Benintendi... Guys that they marketed the s*** out of.

Don't keep the keyboard player (Eovaldi) in spite of the lead singer (Betts).

Bloom is supposed to be a trading genius. Is his MO to get lots of pieces in return for a legit MLBer and hope that one or more of them hits? Fine, but he needs to also put out a product that people want to watch. You know, walk and chew gum at the same time.

That certainly does swing the pendulum the other way..

We're still waiting. Remember all winter when posters like us thought trading a guy like Beni would help free up even more funds to sign a guy like Rosario or even Ozuna?

Maybe that was just the fans' plan.

Absolutely.

Right now, the goal should not just be improving this team (which he very well might have done already). But rather the goal needs to be improving this team to watchable levels that carry into September and (hopefully) beyond...

I am not sure why anyone thought freeing up Benintedi's $6mill AAV would clear room for Ozuna...

So we get a 2.8 hit and KC gets a 2.2 hit. We shaved 2.2.

Seems like it.

@jcmccaffrey

Oops, yes. Benintendi's salary is $6.6 million this year, but he'd signed a two-year, $10 million deal ahead of 2020, so the $5 million AAV is what counts toward the payroll this year

@ChrisCotillo

Correction: Red Sox will pay $2.8 million and the CBT hit on Benintendi is $2.8 million for 2021.

And when the team comes in last place with one of the highest payrolls in the league and everyone is losing interest, do the people footing the bills find consolation in how many people are wearing jerseys?

You know what? As a decades-long RS fan like yourself, my interest in the team never wavered because of those last place finishes. Nor did yours. In large part because we knew most of the players on the team and enjoyed following them. The only thing that will make me want to watch them this year is Fenway Park, as it will be one of the few items (and frankly, that's what players are now) that actually connects the present team to its history.

Yes, we save $2.2M on the Lux tax, but $3.8M in actual dollars.

His contract is $6.6M, so KC is paying $3.8M.

The $5M is the lux tax cost, which doesn't affect KC.

Maybe someday they'll tear that dump down too.

I don't think we're worried about the out of pocket cost, just the lux tax calc.

Assuming we will be straddling the line or going over, this year, yes, mostly.

I believe that conversation happened more than 20 years ago. And then Fenway became the 'model' MLB park, with all others trying to emulate it.

I'd say using Fenway as a model goes back 30 years with the build of Camden Yards.

Less Franchy’s salary.

So, minus about $800K, and we saved $1.4M and whatever Beni would make in an Arb, next year minus Cordero's salary.

I think the trade of Benintendi is the prelude to signing JBJ . Perhaps a two year deal tops. I can't see Cordero as a full time center fielder. Slowly transition to Duran.

I can understand not wanting Cordero as the FT CF'er, but I doubt we add an aging CF'er, even if he accepts 2 years.

I doubt we're even talking to him, now.

Another trade may be in the works, as well as announcing the Sawamuro signing.
