But golf is doing fine, prize money keeps going up all the time, so I'm not sure that totally explains it.

The pandemic has reversed the trend and the decline in golf. The number of rounds has increased by 20 % the past year reversing a multi year trend. Even with the pandemic more than four golf courses here in southern Delaware have closed within the past two years.

While the men's PGA is going well, the LPGA is a shadow of its former self, however.

And it really is in your face when you watch a game now. Football is getting pretty bad with the avalanche of stats too.

I find it easier to ignore the advanced stats in football, though, since there is much more going on at basically all times.

The LPGA obviously lags far behind the men's tour, but the 2020 LPGA tour was scheduled for record high numbers in events and prize money, prior to the pandemic. They seem to have a good commissioner now, at least.

I'm certainly a fan of the LPGA Tour, and not just because the best American stars are around my age. Great tournament last week in Houston

Look, there's no way around it: Football is my favorite sport. It always will be, and there's no changing that. So for me, watching the stuff in between plays of a football game is more entertaining than watching the stuff in between pitches of a baseball game. There's no right or wrong answer here; it's whatever your preference is. At least something is guaranteed to happen in every play of football. It would be great if every baseball hitter could put the first pitch of the AB in play, but that ain't ever going to happen.

Like many Americans, I love football. Except for the Jets and Dolphins.

But like many sports, it has its dry spots of inactivity. Not everyone loves basketball, but you have to give them credit for the pace. Unless they’re running that putrid Triangle Offense...

Football and basketball are relatively simple games . Baseball is somewhat more complicated. It takes more of an effort to understand and appreciate. Analytics makes it more so. For years , many kids learned the game from their fathers , then later taught it to their kids. In today's society , too often that is not happening, and it has been that way for a while now. The lack of a young fan base is baseball's biggest problem. The length and pace of games becomes more of a problem when you don't really understand the game to begin with. The young fan becomes bored quite easily. Nothing MLB has done so far has alleviated this .

Since I have gotten hooked on Rugby Union, American football has become tedious to watch. Once one understands the rules it is exciting and fast paced. It is the way our football should be played.few time.outs limited substitutions and both way players.

In Maine this past summer, you could not find a golf course that you could easily get on. Tee times required on some that were always easy walk ons. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues. I do not think that the pandemic has hurt the game of golf at all.

Also,

That's what happens when more and more people aren't forced to go into an office 5 days a week. Also, all the medical advice has been "go outdoors" so the obvious solution is to do something outside like golfing since you can no longer do a lot of things that were part of your normal routine.

But we know that analytics has a lot to do with starting pitchers getting yanked early and being replaced by a parade of relievers.

If anybody didn't know about the 'third time through the order' mantra, it was made abundantly clear to them in the last game of the World Series.

I don't believe the parade of relievers is the problem. The overall pace of the game with pitchers taking 45 seconds to throw a pitch is a much bigger issue IMO.

Hitters stepping out and fouling pitches off doesn't help, either. MLB can't do much about foul balls, but they can do something about pitching pace and hitters stepping out of the box...

... and ban Velcro!

I agree 100%. It's the simplest way to speed up the game.

It won't happen but banning batting gloves would help lessen the excuse for stepping out.

Ban batting gloves, mandate pine tar (offensively and defensively).

Posted
Why make rules that address the problem indirectly? Just use the pitch-clock. It works find in the minors.

... listen you radicals, "batting" gloves have been around for over 50 years, when Mantle wore a golf glove on Home Run Derby, and then Hawk Harrelson kept his on for real games after a few rounds of 18. But Velcro wasn't invented yet, so no reason to constantly readjust.

Players only used their bare hands for a century before that. It's amazing that any batter ever got a hit for one hundred years.

Is it within the rules for pitchers to wear a glove? If so, I imagine that's coming.

A glove would probably take away from a pitcher's feel. I think just allowing pinetar or bullfrong would do the trick.

Anyone here tried it? I imagine you could get some serious rotation by using a wide-receiver's glove.

If that were the case, Brady would be using a glove in warm weather. Most QB's don't use them in warm weather.

Does golf have a large following of younger fans? It might also have something to do with golf being an individual rather than a team sport.

Yes, WE know that because we are baseball geeks. I don't think most fans are thinking that analytics are ruining the game because they don't follow analytics closely enough to know the impact, even with announcers bringing these points up.

Posted
I disagree. I don't appreciate it being thrown in my face whenever I watch a game on TV (I'm looking at you, Alex Speier).

I also don't get involved in statistical threads on here for that reason

I don't consider you 'most fans'. Anyone who is on a baseball forum regularly knows more about the impact than most fans do.

My brother swears that hockey is the most action packed and face paced sport ever. I have never been able to get into it.

RT @jorgecastillo: Bud Black brought up an interesting take on the DH that he said is being discussed: Having the DH eliminated once the starting pitcher is pulled. As he pointed out, that would discourage the use of openers. It also would allow for the traditional NL strategy late in games.

Interesting idea, for sure. As stated, here's one way to discourage the use of the dreaded opener.

I think it is a great idea which is why it will never happen.
