Contributors at Over the Monster discuss possible Red Sox extensions this offseason:

https://www.overthemonster.com/2020/10/16/21519059/boston-red-sox-offseason-preview-extensions-bogaerts-verdugo-devers-benintendi

The most interesting proposal may be for Andrew Benintendi, who has two remaining years of team control with a guaranteed 2021 salary of $6.6 million.

I feel like if you can manage it, an Andrew Benintendi extension makes a whole lot of sense right now. He’s coming off a career-worst season that was ended early with injury, so this is the lowest his value likely will ever be.

I don’t know what’s wrong with him, but I also believe he will be better. Eventually. Get him signed, long-term and relatively cheaply while it’s still possible, and avoid the uncertainty in future arbitration salaries and buy out a few of his free agency years.

Sox management probably have the best idea at what is going on with Beni this season. If they sign him to an extension, it means they really think this year was a fluke. Once Pedroia is off the books, they could hide a bad contract if Beni goes south anyway. It also is a fine balance between years and AAV. They shouldn't go crazy like an 8 year deal.

Extending Beni makes absolutely no sense...hell his best days maybe behind him....putting on muscle was the worst thing to do on a 5' 7 body....now he's really slow.....

I know Benintedi is not big, but 5'7"?

That would make him one of the shortest players in MLB history...

Beni is taller than Betts. Betts is not 5'6". (per MLB)

Betts is listed as 5'9, Beni is listed as 5'10. Betts is taller in every picture I can find?!?!?

I need slasher to make a ruling. He's fair and balanced on Beni's physique.

FWIW Baseball Reference lists Andrew Benintendi and Mookie Betts as identical 5-foot-9, 180 pounds:

Pedroia is listed at 5'9" too??? C'mon guys, this isn't pro wrestling... You don't have to fudge the numbers.

If only we had a center fielder as good as Margot..... oh wait! Thanks desperate Dave!

Do you ever get tired of playing Monday morning quarter back?

So many think that bauer will land with the Yankees. Yeah right.

Someone has to get him, and only a handful of teams will spend big, this winter.

Watching the highly rtouted NYY'ers fail to dominate this season and flop in the playoffs , then watching the Rays-Astros/Dodgers-Braves struggle against each other, it only becomes more clear how incredible it has been that the RedSox made it to the WS 4 times from 2004-2018, and topped it off by winning the Series each of those times.

Sometimes we need perspective and in 21st century baseball, the Red Sox have already achieved a monumental feat compared to any other team.

And then, here's today's quote from Joel Sherman, columnist from NY Post: "Judge, like Giancarlo Stanton, just may be too big and strong to stay healthy..."

Meanwhile, Mookie -- our former fiscally-unwise longterm midget -- never misses time with nagging injuries that won't heal.

In those 4 title seasons for the Sox, their accumulated postseason record:

44-14

That record is truly amazing!

Even more astounding is our 16-3 record in the World Series!

" Too big and strong to stay healthy" is a new one for me. It's crazy out there , I tell you.

Going out on a limb here - Joel Sherman has never been to medical school or watched an NFL football game...

There is a reason you don't see world class strong men & weight lifters playing baseball and basketball.

Plus, if the muscle strength was gained through PED use, there is an increased chance of injury.

I was saying this just the other day to Gabe Kapler...

Sherman didn't express that very well.

I think 'muscle-bound' is more appropriate.

My father who coached baseball after WW2 in the 40s and 50s believed that big guys like Judge and Stanton were not the ideal baseball players because they were simply too big. The truly great ball players over the years looked more like Mookie Betts than Judge and Stanton.

In the 40’s (I think) the cardinals used a pitch hit midget so he would get a walk.

Right city, wrong team.

It was the St. Louis Browns who used Eddie Gaedel as a pinch hitter in a game around 1951. He walked, was replaced by a pinch runner and never played again. IIRC, he wore number 1/8.

The team moved to Baltimore a couple years later.

Adjusted for inflation, he was as tall as Beni...
