When the Rays traded Archer away, he was in his final 3 years of a deal that paid him $22 million. That's far less than they are currently paying Kevin Kiermaier. They dealt Archer away because they felt the value of what they would receive in return for him was greater than Archer's ability and future production. In short, someone in that organization (Bloom?) felt Archer was overrated...

I agree. I'm just saying $6M to $11M, Archer's pay for those last 3 years, certainly seemed like a bargain, but to the Rays, it was about 10-15% of their player salary budget.

They would love to move Kiermaier, and my guess is, they'd be thrilled to get someone like Vaz for him- enough to give us a very sweet sweetener- like Baz.

And they believed that combination was better because Archer was overrated. At some point, you have to acknowledge that Pittsburgh believed there to be at least equal value in this trade, which means they had more faith on Archer than he deserved. Which is the very definition of the word "overrated."

Or the Rays believed Meadows and Glasnow were underrated. At that point, Glasnow had been relegated to the bullpen.

Here's what was written at the time.

Chris Archer, the two-time All-Star with a team-friendly contract that made him the jewel of baseball's pitching trade market, was finally dealt from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Pittsburgh Pirates, less than a half hour before Major League Baseball's non-waivers trade deadline.

Archer, 29, is under contract through 2021 at a palatable $27.6 million for the next three seasons. That made him attractive both for potential suitors and for the budget-conscious Rays, who had dangled him in trade talks in recent years on the chance they could get a return package featuring both quantity and quality.

With just minutes to spare, the Pirates - in surprise contention for an NL playoff spot -stepped up with a deal that met their standards.

The Pirates will send major league ready pieces Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow to Tampa Bay, continuing the Rays' pattern of accumulating advanced young players to make a run in 2019 and 2020.

The Rays will also receive a player to be named.

Meadows, 23, was a consensus top-10 prospect in baseball before the 2017 season, but injuries and a lackluster major league debut this season dimmed his stock. Nonetheless, the 6-3, 210-pounder has an alluring combo of speed and some power paired with a lifetime .355 on-base percentage in the minor leagues. He'll potentially pair with Kevin Kiermaier and Tommy Pham - also acquired Tuesday by the Rays - in an athletic, dynamic outfield.

Glasnow, 24, was a top starting pitcher prospect whose profile has shrunk to that of a hard-throwing reliever. He has a 4.34 ERA this season - but has struck out 72 batters in 56 innings.

Do the Rays really want to spend 13M over 2 years for a catcher?

BTV thinks the Sox get hosed in that trade. The Rays would need to add Shane McClanahan, Yonny Chirinos or Joe Ryan to even it out.

Getting both Shane's feels very anti-Ray. With Chironos entering his final pre-arb year, he might be more available. But he is not exactly a SP, having topped 89 IP just one time. And his FIP numbers tell the world his ERA might not be as sustainable as one might like. He feels like a "sell high" candidate, but Bloom might like him and if the Sox are getting Baz, it might lessen the blow if Chirinos pumpkins out on us... .

As opposed to spending $26 million for 2 years on an oft-injured glove-only CF?

When I talk dirty, I also get into double headers every Sunday...

If we're talking dirty, Sunday doubleheaders are popular in college. In fact, I missed the ending to the 2018 Pats-Dolphins game, now known as the Miami Miracle, because I was partaking in Game 2 of my own doubleheader. Didn't even have home bed advantage

hehe

So you're saying the Rays were satisfied with two prospects on their way down the ladder? Again, this shows their declining faith in the "jewel of baseball's pitching trade market". Hence, my point about Archer being overrated...

Sunday doubleheaders used to be the norm for every team in MLB. Bringing them back will reduce the likelihood of WS games being snowed out. Keep baseball out of November!

"Overrated" is a very fuzzily defined and used word. "Overvalued" is fine, though.

I like the idea, especially in an age where people get bored with baseball for a medley of reasons. Make the games shorter and reduce the amount of time you run into football season each year.

This post is overrated. :)

"Overrated" doesn't mean "bad." It just means you get more love than you deserve...

I'd be happy with just Baz, but someone else to sweeten the pot would be great.

That might be taking the "get more love than you deserve" more literally than intended...

I've always thought Mike Trout was overrated

He's in Anaheim. Nobody out there loves the Angels. He's underloved and underrated!

He just had a baby, so he does get a little love... ;)

Are you saying Wilt didn't intend to get that much love? Was he under some sort of spell or demonic possession?

His baby probably came out with a Dodgers jersey on knowing that market.

I think you missed his joke

About 30 years ago, Chamberlain wrote a book in which he claimed he slept with 20,000 women, hence "more love than he deserved." Ir'a ridiculous statement, as it meant he slept with one woman a day for nearly 55 years. He was about 54 or so at the time he made the claim. Ignoring the 0 he had to have had for the first few years of his life, I also think he took a few days off to squeeze in some basketball...

The Dodgers?!! That's not Trout Country. They're all about Pollocks over there!

Apparently, he was known for having "many" per day in his "prime."

Speaking of Pollock, hoiw about a trade centered on Eovaldi for Pollock and a pitcher?

I would do whatever it takes to make that work. Pollock went to my HS, and my coach was also his coach. I believe he grew up a Red Sox fan as well, but I may be wrong. It's hard to tell in CT.

OMG now I'm all excited. If this doesn't happen, I'm feeding you to a pool of piranhas ;)

Per BTV, that trade would be Eovaldi for Pollock and Robinson Ortiz. a 19yo who last posted a 4.59 ERA in A ball....

Do you have a pool of piranhas? I think you might need it here...
