I never thought it was a foregone conclusion. I thought it was a legitimate risk. We'll never know how it would have played out without a pandemic.

Also, as you know, while technically it's the largest contract in history, with the deferrals the present value is lower than a few others.

THe deferrals do not affect the actual value of the deal. They just play games with the AAV for tax purposes. It may take a little longer than the contract states, but at some point Dodgers' ownership is going to pay him $365 million dollars...

You're not a believer that the present value of money is a real thing, I guess.

You know, I was talking about that just the other day to Bobby Bonilla.

I think we both know that the impact on the AAV and luxury tax of the Dodgers is a bigger deal than it will be on Betts' life and financial situation....

Sure, not saying it's a big deal to anybody, really. It's ridiculous sums any way you slice it up.

But as a bean-counter, I do see the value of Betts's contract as less than the value of Gerrit Cole's.

Sox finalized Kiké signing. He takes Pedroia's roster spot.

On pins and needles about who goes to make room for Richards.

I nominate Joel Payamps or Hudson Potts, or maybe both and go shopping from the 142 man unsigned list.

Potts is not high on my list of replaceable players, but I could see there being 4-6 players available near the end that are all better than these 6-8 Sox players:

Brice (out of options)

Springs

Payamps

Wilson

Walden

Brewer

Valdez

Mazza

We could maybe even improve on these players at a low cost:

Brasier

Andriese

Chavis

Arauz

Whitlock (rule 5)

Potts

Rosario

Zero chance they DFA Potts, who is a former first round pick and was in AA by age 20...

Righthander Chris Archer signs one-year, $6.5 million contract with Tampa Bay:

Steamer and ZiPS project Archer with 2021 WAR of 1.7 in 26 starts and 1.6 in 19 starts.

The Rays could contend again.

Or not.

Agreed. I think Rosario is pretty safe for another year, at least.

I think Whitlock is someone to hold onto- big upside.

That still leaves 8-12 players that could easily be replaced by an inexpensive last minute FA signing.

Whitlock and big upside aren’t really concepts that go together. Whitlock is pitching depth and a guy who I thought would end up as a swing guy. If he hits, your upside isn’t huge, but he could be solid.

I’ve talked a lot of BS the last year about Bloom but I actually Love Love Love this player he’s a winner and has a bit of Ortiz clutch in him .Spring training is here and honestly excited to see Verdugo and KiKi playing together .I don’t think it’s out of the question that we may see a huge year from JDM .What about a platoon a reunion with Reddick ? Can he play LF ? What about Braun ? Appolagies for the boredom posts ready for the real deal .Pitching may be a surprise this year.Bloom getting it done And we need it .I say 94 wins in 21 and one hell of a Fun ride .This team is no longer Boring .

The Orioles dealt Alex Cobb (plus $5 mill) to the Angels for MiLB prospect Jahmei Jones.

That’s actually a pretty good get for a salary dump. Jones was once a consensus MLB top 100 prospect, and was still ranked in the top 100 by Baseball Prospectus as recently as their pre-2019 rankings. Jones did have a rough 2019 in the minors and got only 7 PA in 2020 in the Majors. Seems like either they gave up on the 23yo Jones fast or the new price for salary dumps is astronomical...

If he were on the Yanks, you'd be singing an entirely different tune.

Post #13, he refers to Whitlock's projection as a "backend starter." I can live with that...

We should all be leery of the Red Sox rotation as is, but I don't see how anyone can favor the Yankees to finally win a pennant based on their pitching "upgrades", either. An MLB article today says NY improved their rotation, but all I see is a "favorite" who replaced their #s 2, 3 and 4 starters with injured guys and hopefuls. Nothing guaranteed, there, either.

Requesting board assistance: I've lost all features and editing privileges, and even submitting replies is a three-button excursion. Can anyone tech savvy help?

When looking at who were the Yank's innings eaters and best SP'er over the last 2 seasons, Tanaka, Paxton and Happ are easily in the top 4 in both areas.

IP 2019-2020

230 Tanaka

211 Happ

171 Paxton

143 German

107 CC Sabathia

103 Cessa

fWAR

4.1 Tanaka

3.8 Paxton

2.0 German

1.9 Happ

1.5 Cole

0.4 CC

You are right, nothing is guaranteed. Their rotation could get worse, especially if Sevvy does not return to form after returning mid season.

In February, all improvements are on paper only. Now one could argue the arms of Taillon and Kluber are baasically made out of paper.

Personally, I think the Yankees did improve their rotation, but not by a whole lot. They also drastically increased their injury risks.

As far as the 2021 season goes, the Yankees have had a more productive off-season than the Red Sox. The Rays have gotten worse on paper, but somehow that type of thing never seems to stop that team...

You have to go back to the old days when we just wrote everything on Post-It notes and stuck them to our monitors...

The teams that win the offseason don't typically win the regular season.

To me, the "improvement" made to the Yankee rotation will mostly come from within their system more than from Kluber and Taillon, despite my high regard for Taillon.

They have a lot of young starters and only need 2 or 3 to do well.

Kluber and Taillon are massive X factors. They might both work out, or one, or neither. So anything between 0 WAR and 7+ WAR.

Agreed, and the input they get from their young starters is also an X factor.

Tanaka, Paxton & Happ were more know commodities and gave the Yanks over 600 IP from 2019-2020.

Kolten Wong signs with Brewers - 2 years / $18 million

Solid deal, although they are getting a bit of a logjam with middle infielders, considering they already had Keston Hiura, Luis Urias and Orlando Arcia.

I suppose this bumps Hiura to 3B.

This move does make Hernandez at 2yrs/$14mil look a bit questionable...
