I haven't heard Reddick's name anywhere, until here with you.

Me neither. And that’s why I think he will fit whatever budget constraints the Sox have...

Carlos Rodon back to CWS.

High upside gamble, but honestly, does Boston need an arm even less durable than Eovaldi or Richards?

I think the only person I heard mention him was you.

I probably am. I would have considered Rodon at best a luxury. But I am not at all miffed they passed. Rodon needs to be on a team that can withstand his frequent injuries...

If you’re on a team that isn’t winning this year, you can withstand his lack of durability

The biggest weakness on the Red Sox right now is injured and injury-prone SP, so no.

I mentioned him once or twice, prior to the Garrett Richards signing. But I don’t mind them passing on him. He is more likely to help the White Sox than be worthwhile trade bait for the Red Sox...

I am expecting - yes, expecting - 3 more actual additions. I’m not sure who, but their names probably rhyme with Workman, Moreland and Reddick.

Nothing major that’s going to put the Sox back into contention, like Trevor Bauer might. But just enough to fill a few minor gaps while not exceeding the limit.

And these moves plus the two previous signings of Richards and Hernandez would mean saying goodbye to Springs, Payamps, Wilson, Walden and Mazza. Although some might return on MiLB contracts...

Pedroia isn't retiring?

Posted (edited)

How long do the Sox have before they need to add EHern & Richards?

Pedey retiring would make one roster move easier, although I'm not sure anyone is fretting over DFA'ing anyone on the bottom of our 40 man roster. Chances are, the player we DFA might end up on our minor league roster, anyway, or we can sign a minor league FA just as good as the guy we cut.

Possible DFA or trade candidates (options remaining according to soxprospects.com):

Pedey retires

Springs 3

Payamps 1

Wilson 2 (maybe only if we add an OF'er)

Brice 0

Walden 1

Brewer 1

Arauz 2

Valdez 2

Mazza 1

Andriese 0

Whitlock 3 (rule 5)

Bazardo 3

Groome 3

That's up to him...

Hasn't the retirement plan already been hinted at as happening?

Are there any quotes from Pedey or his agent on this?

I've seen it mentioned a few times. Not sure what the hold up is...

Words like "working on the framework" of his retirement.

Does this mean they are restructuring his money owed?

Deciding when and how he retires?

I'm glad we don't really have any pressing roster crunch issues, this winter.

Pete Abraham said it'd be done by the end of January.

And who catches for us if they trade Vaz - Plawecki and Wong?

Which is why I think the Sox would need to be bowled over to give up Vaz. He's not expensive and his contract goes through next year. If they really think they can be close to contention this year and then in the hunt next year, why give Vaz away?

I think the idea is they only do it if they get blown away, which makes sense...

I agree. I think they should shop everyone (at least listen to offers) because you never know when a deal that is too good to be true lands on your desk.

Even Devers?

Yup. I'd be sad to see him go, but if some team wanted to overpay for him, it's time to go.

I think I'd be hesitant. Sure, they could get a boatload of young talent, but even some of the highest rated prospects might not work out like Devers has.

Would you deal him for Wander Franco? That's basically an overpay, but is it a good idea?

Every suggested Vaz trade I have made on the BTV site involves us getting back a catcher, most of whom I believe are better handling the pitching staff than Vaz, but I am no expert on other team's players.

I would never trade Vaz while counting on Plawecki and Wong to be our only catchers of note.
