I may end up being totally wrong, but I get the feeling Chavis is going to be given a somewhat long look, at some point, to prove he belongs or not.

He may also start the season in AAA, and who we add or not will factor into this, but I think he gets a chance in 2021.

Bloom on high end FA...

"There’s risks you’re taking on, too, and sometimes there are consequences down the road with that,” he continued. “What you don’t want to be is hamstrung when it really comes time to push some chips in because of some commitments you made earlier. That isn’t, to some degree, the position we’re in now. And look, it worked. All my teammates have rings here because of it. But you’ve got to make sure you’re flexible so you can really take advantage of those great opportunities when it’s really the right time for them.”

Spoken in English.....my hand is not good enough to push all my chips in.....I need to see a better hand....

But even if you fold, if you want to play again, you still have to ante up.

I think he starts in Worcester, but someone will get hurt and he will get some MLB at-bats...

I think Bloom's patient approach will pay off for us over the long run. But this year he's still in a tough spot. If we don't crack .500, a large part of the fanbase will either be tuned out or expressing discontent.

Chaim knew what he was getting into here, though.

Yikes.

2013 Enough said.

It's February 5th. I'm starting to doubt anyone else is being added to the Red Sox. So as constituted, I'm going to say ... 80-82.

There will be more additions to the Red Sox before the start of the season. Of this I am very confident.

Bloom makes a lot of sense, if you ask me.

Can't count on 2013 miracle seasons happening very often.

It really wasn't a miracle season though.

I'm not expecting us to win the division this year. Legitimately competing for a wildcard spot? Absolutely.

It kind of was, going from 69 wins in 2012 to 97 in 2013 and then back to 71 in 2014. Everything went right in 2013. A lot of upside randomness at work.

I discount anything that happened in 2012 due to Bobby Valentine. And I say that with all sincerity.

A lot of things went right in 2013, as things almost always have to do when a team wins a World Series. I don't think it was a miracle season where everything went right though. I've never agreed with that assessment.

Yes, we will need a lot of things to break in our favor to win the World Series this year. So will the Yankees.

Annnnd just like that the NY Yankees have no shot at the World Series trophy . We have less a chance though but I take comfort like a heated blanket and hot Coco Watching the snow slowly fall watching the 2018 team celebrate while getting my feet massaged ....yeah that kinda comfort .Sorry JAX maybe next year .

With this current roster? I am not seeing competitiveness unless they add more wild card spots.

Playoffs? You’ll struggle to be .500 as currently constituted

The pleasure will be even better.

(BTW, you don't need to be great to make the playoffs, especially if they expand them.)

If anyone thinks Sale comes back this season to make an impact is crazy! The least sign of concern in a simulated game or BP session and he’s on the shelf until 2022! And as for Bloom... what the hell are you doing? Schoop signs for like 4.5 and we don’t even make an effort to land him! Nah it’s cool go throw 65-70 mil at Mr I walk on water in CF because I make a few really good plays but can’t hit my own weight for AVG.... not to mention our catcher seems to have had as many successful stolen bases lately as him! Please don’t blow our payroll up to bring him back!!!!

Not trying to bust your balls, here, but honestly, I don't understand a single point you just made.

Why do people think Bradley is coming back when every single article about him says they’re not?

...and did I miss the Schoop signing?

Even though I've been pulling for us signing him, even I would not be upset, if he signed for $4.5M elsewhere.

Yes, with this current roster. It's not quite where I'd like it to be, but I think we have enough to win a wildcard berth. In terms of the players who are uncertainties for this year, like Beni, JD, Erod, we need a little better than an average number of things to work out in our favor.

As questionable as our pitching staff is, the potential is there. I think the other AL East teams have almost as many question marks about their pitching as we do. Our offense should be very good. I am concerned about our defense, though Kike should help out a little there. I'd still like that defensive CFer signed.

Sale not til ASB, this team is dead in the water

Sale will provide the boost and the spark that we need at the ASB to take us into the playoffs.

You do know this is the realistic thread, right? This isn’t the puppy dog, fairy tales and unicorn fart thread.

The players rejected expanded playoffs and the season should move ahead as it was in 2019. There will be 3 division winners (not the Sox). There are two other teams aside from the division winner that are head and shoulders better than the Sox. Then you’ve got the A’s and Astros in the West, where one of the teams will win the division and the other will be better than the Sox. In the central, the Guardians still have the pitching to be dangerous as a WC with the CWS and Twins as in window teams with one of them likely to win the division. You’re buried and likely to be well below .500
