Yes, harmony is in full Cooler mode these days.

We also got Seabold with Pivetta for Workman & Hembree.

Let's hope it turns into the next Vaz & Lowe for Slocumb type deal.

The Rays seem to know things like this, so good news, but harmony will show us his ZIPS projection, so we are doomed.

Nick Pivetta is among several impressive acquisitions by Chaim Bloom.

Trivia: Pivetta and his one-time Phillie teammate Michael Saunders went to the same high school on Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia.

Pivetta always reminded me of Jake Arrieta. Both had similar stories about having an incredible arsenal they just could not harness and played for teams that just could not maximize their talents, but were hesitant to deal them both due to their potential.

Both were finally traded iin July of their age 27 seasons.

Arrieta threw 358 IP for the Orioles with a 5.46 ERA/4.72 FIP.

Pivetta threw 396 IP for the Phillies with a 5.50 ERA/4.64 FIP.

After the deal, Arrieta threw 803 IP for the Cub with a 2.73 ERA/3.16 FIP.

Probably a bit much to expect those numbers from Pivetta, but I do think there is a chance he pitches much better than he did in Philly. So far Pivetta has a 1.80 ERA/3.39 FIP for the Sox in 10 IP...

803 IP and 3.73 would be a gold mine.

FTFY

Especially since it does not highlight how tremendeous Jake Arrieta was during a couple of those years, which include a Cy Young Award...

That would be a diamond mine.

Think of how many MLB pitchers had similar numbers and went on to do nothing better.

I'm very hopeful on Pivetta, as hope springs eternal, this time of year, but he's not the only guy that could come through for us in 2021.

ERod, Richards, Houck and maybe even Eovaldi and/or Perez could surprise us.

If we could be in the race when Sale comes back, who knows...

If will be starting on the mound Opening Day, then in the next game, and the next game, and the next game... then, we'll get Martin Perez.

But I think both these Red Sox and their fans would rather be dismissed as underdogs going in, compared to the AL favorites also stocked with uncertain pitching.

Pivetta stinks. I can remember days when Red Sox fans thought Andy Hassler would step into the rotation and perform.

Pivetta pitched well in his 2 starts for us last year. Think there's no chance whatsoever? Sometimes it just takes some little adjustment or other for a guy to do better.

One week away before pitchers and catchers report and Bloom has a jalopy of a roster. We might finish ahead of Baltimore that is like a stripped car up on blocks. And we might compete with the Rays who moronically decided to build on their World Series appearance by decimating their starting staff. The Sox don’t have the horses to run with the Yankees or the Blue Jays. Both should pummel the pukes we send to the mound. I expect that we will see more position players taking the mound in ‘21 than in the shortened ‘20 season. Three different position players toed the rubber in ‘20.

There was hope for Andy Hassler too.

Hassler had a 140 ERA+ for the Sox in 78. I can't say that's a stretch. It's not like Hassler was a scrub. He had some decent season, though most of it came out of the pen.

Good news for JD?

Yes, he became a RP'er with a few spot starts after 1977, so the comp is a bit off, but yes, he did fairly well for several years:

ERA+

140 w BOS in '78 (102 with KC time combined 88 IP)

84 in '79 (96 IP)

147 in '80 (95 IP

114 in '81 (72 IP)

146 in '82 (71 IP)

Hassler seems to have had a much better pedigree than Pivetta does.

If the 13 players in Red pitch most of our 2021 innings, it's easy to see how we can see a major improvement over the 2020 numbers.

The players in RED only pitched 37% of our innings in 2020. (193/524)

The fans were hoping that he would convert his excellent stuff to a starting role, but he could never do it. He was much better than Pivetta, so I am not pencilling Nick P into the rotation.

Sure, but if we get into a shootout with the Jays lineup, they have more heavy artillery.

Only early on.

Their rotation is not much better than the Sox, if at all (although wild card Nate Pearson could go either way, and one of those might put them over the top). But their bullpen has more question marks in it than the Sox bullpen does.

Their only real pitching advantage is at the prospect level...

If we want to be realistic, Bloom is going north with the same roster as last year with additions of a broken down starter who hasn’t been healthy since 2015, a swing and miss low OBP power hitting OFer and a utility FA. Realistically, this will not get it done.

Well, don't forget that Eduardo Rodriguez guy. And eventually that Chris Sale guy.

I don't think he's done, either. The OF is still a question mark, and I don't think anyone tagged Renfore as a starter, given that he only paid him $3mill. That's utility infielder money. I assume the Sox will add an OF at some point in the next week or two...
