The Mets are showing interest in Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez, per reports from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com) and Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

While the Mets have gotten off to a subpar 15-19 start, they’re nonetheless in the playoff race in a wide-open National League. And catcher is one of the areas they’re looking to upgrade, as Heyman reports that they’re hoping to at least add depth behind the plate. The club was previously in on Jason Castro before the Padres acquired him from the Angels on Sunday, according to Heyman.

Mets catchers have collectively logged middling offensive numbers this year, largely because starter Wilson Ramos is amid one of the worst offensive years of his career. On the other hand, the normally light-hitting Tomas Nido has posted impressive production, though his success has come over a paltry 26 trips to the plate.

With Ramos likely to become a free agent after the season (New York has a $10MM option or a $1.5MM buyout decision), the Mets could be in the market for a new No. 1 backstop during the winter. In acquiring Vazquez, though, they’d seemingly remove the need to pursue catchers in the offseason. Vazquez, after all, is controllable next season for $6MM and has a $7MM option (or a $250K buyout) for 2022. As such, there may not be any urgency for Boston to move Vazquez, but the out-of-contention club is at least open to it.

Vazquez, who turned 30 on Aug. 21, hasn’t hit much since his career began in 2014. He seemed to turn a corner in that regard last year with a .276/.320/.477 line and 23 home runs in 521 plate appearances, but he has slumped to a .252/.286/.411 line with four homers in 112 PA this season. At the very least, though, Vazquez is an accomplished defender – one who has thrown out a whopping 40 percent of would-be base thieves this season and during his career.

Edwin Diaz has to be coming back in any Vaz-to-Mets deal. "It's-Right-to-Bear-Arms" has always been Bloom's favorite Ben and Jerry's flavor...

I'd rather get someone with longer team control than both of these guys' 2 years.

The Mets/Vazquez talk is overblown per Rosenthal

So Barnes and Peeez stay put.

Sometimes deals can trickle through to the media for a bit. But I think they stay...

Barring a delayed announcement, the deadline also passes with JBJr in his last month with the Red Sox. No idea what Bloom's discussions with other GMs about Jackie entailed but obviously he didn't draw enough payoff to make a deal.

This is one guy for whom FA is going to be a long, unrewarding slog through this particular winter.

Had given Bloom a B for Hembre Workman then an A for Mitch ,today Bloom gets a D today .Bloom really failed in my opinion to deal Barnsy Perez JBJ .I am pretty upset at the hire at this point and think Moon MVP and many others could have done better .I do not trust this GM now .Paethetic GM to this point .

Didn’t you say earlier you didn’t want him to give players away?

If no other team was willing to give up anything good for this crowd, what was he supposed to do?

And Barnes and a Perez are controlled for another season. They were trade bait, but moving them was not necessary...

Delayed announcements are apparently still filtering in. Padres acquired Taylor Williams announced at 3:34CST.

It wasn't a complete sell off, apparently the Red Sox plan to compete next season. I can't say I'm surprised, this is John Henry after all and he has invested a fortune into this organization and will likely continue to do so.

Sign Bauer in the off-season, E-Rod returns, so does Cora. Sale will return sometime in the middle of the 2021 season. Bloom will need to fix the bullpen, but the Rays always had a good track record in finding under the radar relievers.

In the meantime, keep losing games to improve your draft positioning and go hard after some top international prospects. I liked the Pillar trade, it suggests the Red Sox plan to be active on the international front.

I'm surprised we didn't trade JBJ w cash for something.

We don't know what the offers were for Eovaldi & Barnes, and both have another year left, so waiting and hoping their stock rises might work out.

Vaz has 2 years of control, so that non trade is understandable.

All in all, we traded every FA to be but Jackie.

You could almost say that JBJ got special treatment this year, with the arbitration salary he got and the non-trade.

Just to clarify, Eovaldi has 2 years left as well.

I'm JBJ's biggest fan, and I agree on this. I was surprised we agreed to pay him that much, and that we didn't trade him.

I'm guessing that no contending team thought JBJ was going to improve their team significantly enough to take him as a rental.

There was talk a team or two were interested.

A bag of balls would have been worth it. I can't believe nobody wanted him with some cash.

I could be wrong, and the rumors could have been wrong.

We did dump every other player that will be a FA, so I guess I shouldn't complain. Plus, it's not like Duran or Jimenez are ML ready, now.
