Sure he did. But I don't think the 3 contracts you mentioned are the reason we didn't keep Mookie.

The contracts of Price and Eovaldi would have been off the books after 2022. Mookie's new deal doesn't start until 2021.

It would be unbelievably short-sighted for a franchise with the Red Sox's money to have those two deals affect keeping Mookie.

And yet lots of unbelievably short-sighted people here were whining about the Sox potentially going over the luxury tax in the short term if they resigned Mookie...

But those three deals also would have cost the Sox $213mill running through 2024. If Eovaldi was allowed to walk, Price opted out, and Sale was never extended, Henry would have another $307mill total to spend on the Sox, you don't think that changes the picture on Mookie?

We would have needed to pay some other starting pitchers, though.

It's my belief Mookie's situation superceded all those things.

I think they gave up on trying to keep him. And that may have been before the deals with Sale and Eovaldi.

That is possible. But I think once those deals went down, it sealed Mookie's exit...

That theory just didn't make sense to me. It suggests that they weren't giving Mookie any thought at all when they did them. And then went "Oh, whoops"?

I've seen that happen before, the most glaring example being John Schuerholz having to trade Kevin Millwood because he offered arbitration to Greg Maddux. A long time ago, but he basically admitted it publicly with his "the economics of baseball stick" comment that tried to divert blame from a situation that was obviously his fault.

With Mookie, I could actually see more of him holding out, and Dombrowski just saying "well f*** THAT" and going ahead and spending his allowance, and basically forgoing the chance of coming to an amicable agreement with Betts or seeing if his demands changed...

Even if all that was so, the Red Sox were in no way forced to trade Mookie.

No, but without extending him and with Sale out, it was the right decision. This was only re-enforced with ERod getting sick and Price opting out of the season...

And that little thing with Mookie becoming a Dodger for life...

Without the extension, it would have been stupid to keep him around.

Well, there's no hope when it comes to Mookie. He's gone forever.

They should trade Verdugo, Downs and Wong for him.

The Dodgers aren't dumb; they would demand pitching prospects.

But unlike LA's future arms, Boston's are so bad that they'd have to get a third team involved. Let's see, what's equal value for 13 years of Mookie... how about Vanderbilt's entire pitching staff?

Ward, Mata, Houck, Groome, DHern for Mookie. You're trading 8 future CY seasons for an overpaid player! They'd jump at that!!!

I don't think the twitter account is run by John Henry or Chaim Bloom.
It's run by the organization. And I am virtually certain that Bloom and Henry et.al. have it on their Twitter feed. A gaffe like that should have resulted in a phone call to the Twitter guy from one of the tone deaf cadre to delete the tweet.

It's run by some lowly paid marketing guy. It was deleted because Bloom/Henry/et al saw it. The tweet was deleted.

I see that ownership has taken a beating on Twitter for celebrating the reset. LOL! What a bad move. Let's celebrate that we are in last place and have had a fire sale. Yay!!!

It's a bad move in that hints to fans that ownership can now spend on players. So they'd better or else... they'll be recycling cardboard spectators next season (or the next one where actual warm bodies can sit -- I mean, squeeze -- into Fenway chairs).

Agreed. I don't think they couldn't pay Mookie because they paid pitchers. I'm in the camp that they didn't like Betts' price, so then decided instead to invest in veteran arms.

Didn't they do this before -- wasn't Lackey a consolation signing because they missed out on someone else (Tex?)?

Was Rusney Castillo an impulse signing or compensation buy?

Rusney was an impulse buy for not signing Jose Abreu the previous offseason.

Was it deleted after the blow back?

It was deleted within the hour. I think the twitter guy posted it thinking it would be funny. Someone higher up found out about it (backlash or otherwise) and told them to take it down.

At the end of the day, it was not a good look. This organization makes some really dumb decisions sometimes (Henry going on sports radio to rage on current players, kicking every single former player and coach on their way out the door, Sox Appeal, Henry flip flopping on what the spending limitations were in 2020, etc.). They never treat this like the storied franchise it should be.

Reportedly it was Matt Holliday.

IMO, the reason we didn't pay Mookie is that we didn't want to pay him $400 million.

Also IMO, that's the only acceptable reason.

But why didn't we want to pay Mookie $400 million? You can't look at his contract in a bubble. Whether the Sox are willing to pay out a big contract has a lot to do with how much they're paying other players and how many cost-controlled players are on the team or will be in the near future.

The FO had said that they wouldn't be able to keep all of their players and that is due to the dreaded cliff. In other circumstances, Henry might have opened his wallet for Mookie.

Carson Fulmer got DFA’d by the last place Pirates. They picked him up recently and have already cut him. You have to wonder if he has a physical problem or some other issue for him to be such a bust after having been a celebrated first round pick from Vanderbilt a few years ago.

He's 26. Red Sox drafted him out of high school and almost again in 2015 when they took Beni 7th overall. White Sox picked Fulmer with the next pick and he made the majors a year later.
