I may have used a typewriter once in my life...

PlaySkool doesn't count. Neither does Doug & Melissa (which is probably more accurate)...

Sale is an incredible competitor. We were fortunate to get him in trade, fortunate to sign him up as well. I cannot wait to see him return. I think that I might be as confident as he is that his return will be just what we want to see.

I totally agree.

My biggest worry is that his super competitiveness causes him to overthrow.

Sale is older and should be wiser after the injury and TJ. I'm expecting his experience will lead him to be more of a pitcher so he doesn't try to overthrow. No doubt Cora will be careful with him as he is probably the most significant addition any team can get for the second half of the season.

Sale is very smart, too.

I’m not expecting him to overthrow or try too hard, but my statement was more about me not being that worried about him regaining form.

I do recall him coming back from an injury before and throwing harder than ever and getting hurt after one or two starts.

Cora had to keep sale from over doing it. Even if it means keeping him inactive until august 31.

I'm not sure the date he returns is the main issue, but I agree, he will not start, until they think it's safe.

I'm not sure, if this is what "did in" Sale in 2018, but he missed a start or two in early August and returned on August 12th.

He ended up missing a month after that and came back to pitch very limited innings afterwards. His velo chart shows he pitched harder that game than any other game all year.

In 2019, his last 2 starts, he K's 25 in 14.2 IP and pitched 108 pitches in his last start on 8/13.

Persuasive.

The way Cora talks makes me believe he thinks of Sale as his ACE in the hole. He will be brought in during August to give the Sox a lift when needed.

The problem with Chris Sale coming back is he has to be ramped up slowly and his workload is going to be limited, he had Tommy John surgery and hasn't even begun a rehab assignment yet. He truly is an X factor, I don't think it's not plausible he can help this team in October but that's also asking a lot right now. We just don't know how long it's going to take and even if he's elite again will he be ready to handle the workload on his arm?

I sat about 10 rows up behind home plate at that game; he regularly hit 100 mph on the Baltimore scoreboard. Between Sale's release point and mix of fastballs and sliders, every pitch was a split-second blur. Never seen anything like it... and I'll bet that included the human beings standing in the batter's box. All they could do was guess and swing...

I have no doubt Chris Sale will be back and pitch this year. The question becomes is he 100%? or is he 80%?

If he is 100% what type of workload can we expect in October?

If he gets back near form, he will help in some way- just maybe not as a 5-7 inning pitcher, even by October.

My major worry is not so much about him not returning to form, but more about him reaching back for that little extra, possibly for just one pitch.

Cora can baby him more than he actually needs and tell him not to overthrow, but if it’s a key situation, I’m not sure Sale has “dial back” in his vocabulary.

He may only be up to 40-50 pitches per outing by October, or even less, but if he’s between 80-90%, that could be a huge help.

I'd be willing to bet he'll be more ramped up than that - obviously barring a health setback.

Agreed. I was going low end, assuming Cora babies him as much as possible, and how that still may not be enough to keep Sale from over-extending himself.

You can have 20 guys talk to him about the need to not overthrow, but I fear the competitor in him may take over for just long enough to cause harm.

He's smart enough to know his limits, but they guy is a fierce competitor and has been out of the thick of things for a long time. It must be killing him.

(Just my opinion.)

@PeteAbe

Per the box score, Chris Sale's line today was 3 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Faced 13 hitters in Sarasota.

3 singles (one a bunt) and a double.

Red Sox LHP Chris Sale allowed a leadoff single then retired the next three hitters in his first rehab start for the FCL. Per a source, fastball sat 93 mph, mixed in his changeup at 85-87. Clean inning, all weak contact.

@alexspeier

Chris Sale threw three innings in Florida today. I'm told he topped out at 97 mph and sat at 94-95.

Next start will be in Portland..................

I heard that this is a COVID Postponement. Is that correct?

Unfortunately it is correct Ted.

I wanted to see Duran play badly.

A healthy and productive Sale for the stretch run will be a site for sore eyes! Bloom’s decision to get another starter before the trade deadline will have to be made before the Sox know what kind of a Sale that they are going to have when he comes back.

It's Chris Sale day in Portland tonight!

I was going to go, but I'm going to a ceremony for a great friend who died, last year.
