whatever the outcome of this season is....our f***ing LT better be reset for the 2021 season.

That at least is a gold-plated cinch.

Im curious..how does a "suspension" of all or part of the season affect contract? Yeah, Im wondering if there are no games, is Mookie a FA after 2020? What about an abbreviated season? The CBA must include language for this...right?

Per the CBA, each team is required to carry Disaster Insurance. My guess is they'd still have to pay the players, but may be able to file a claim with their insurance company.

I looked throughout the CBA and didn't see anything about suspended seasons, but I'll keep looking.

This summer was supposed to be one of the best ones of my life. There's so much uncertainty now, I can't even begin to fathom what the world will be like in 3 months. Really just a bummer all around. I was also convinced that the Red Sox weren't going to be half bad this season, even with everything that's happened in the offseason

Per the CBA, any player with a Uniform Player's Contract (UPC) is paid semi-monthly after the season starts.

Per the following:

If the Player is in the service of the Club for part of the championship season only, he shall receive such proportion of the sum above mentioned, as the number of days of his actual employment in the championship season bears to the number of days in the championship season.

it seems that an abbreviated season would still provide for full payment to each player under contract (i.e. if you are employed 100% of the season of 150 games, you'll still be paid per your contract).

Especially in light of:

No Salary Reduction

6.© The amount stated in paragraph 2 and in special covenants

hereof which is payable to the Player for the period stated in paragraph

1 hereof shall not be diminished by any such assignment, except for

failure to report as provided in the next subparagraph (d).

Try not to get too bummed out. We still don't know how this will affect us long term.

MVP's advice is sound. Don't get too bummed. In 3 months your biggest disappointment may be the Red Sox. And you can handle that.

Thunder, there are a ton of quotes I love about just living for today because you can't get too stressed about tomorrow.

"Today is a gift."

"Let tomorrow be tomorrow. Let tonight be tonight."

Nobody knows what the future will really bring us. It's just wasted effort to get stuck in being depressed about all the horrible things that could go wrong. Enjoy and appreciate what you have today.

This morning Jeff Passan reported that an Opening Day of April 9 — two weeks after the originally scheduled March 26 Opening Day — is highly unlikely. Passan, on TV this morning, after being asked if April 9 was likely:

“From everybody that I speak to, players, executives, officials, people at the union, the answer is no. And if there is baseball on April 9, something went really, really well across the country . . . the expectation at this point among almost everybody, is that we’re not going to see baseball until May.”

And if they go much beyond that, the players will need additional Spring Training to ramp up. June 1st would not shock me.

We have not as yet implemented large scale testing of individuals so do not as yet know how many cases are out there nor how it is spreading. The steps taken to quarantine those known to have tested posiitive and those in direct contact with people who have tested positive should help but the unknown cases remain and represent a possibility of further increasing spread. I would think it will be highly unlikely that a good handle will be developed on the situation for at least a month and then authorities will be reticent to allow large gatherings to resume until cases are demonstrably dropping sdignificantly. I would guess a resumption in early June would be realistic.

I appreciate that. I am a textbook long term planner. I'm so eager to get out of college because I have all these ideas of what I want my life to me. I'm desperate to get out of CT, get settled somewhere, have a family, etc. Hell, I even have names for my kids. But, I was really looking forward to this summer. I've been depressed for a good portion of the winter, and was relying on my summer plans to get me through it. I'm scheduled to have my first real accounting internship, and I've been working on my people skills, and for the first time in my life, I can make friends of either sex and not have them be repulsed by my inability to pick up on various social cues, or my tendency to be honest, borderline brutally honest, with people. Then, there's the Travelers Championship. I've made so many friends there that I only see during tournament week, and from the first time I ever volunteered there, in 2012 at age 13, it's felt like home to me, and one of the few places were I don't get social anxiety. And I was also looking forward to one last go-around with the football team. I'm the man this year, guaranteed to travel to every road game. Our preseason camp is my favorite thing to do all season, because we get to live at college without having classes to go to. Thankfully, that should not be affected, but who knows. Everything else I mentioned? Truly up in the air right now.

But this is a case of what the NBA's CBA calls a "force majeure" event--war, famine, epidemic ... In which case, the league is not bound to pay players. The NHL has a similar clause (not identical), and I would expect there's something in MLB's agreement that is similar. Both NBA and the NHL have said (I believe) that they will not invoke it in this case, but MLB?

If I have to stay inside everyday, and there's no sports to watch, I'll be super bummed out.

Buy stock in Netflix.

I am buying airline stocks and hotel stocks. They have been decimated. If you hold them for a couple of years you can make a lot of money. This is a blip....it will end and a vaccine will be developed. Hang in there everyone.....and go buy an Elizabethan collar for yourself.

It hasn't bottomed out yet. Good idea, though.

The CBA is online. See if you can find the language.

Hmm. Can't find anything that addresses that, which somewhat surprises me, as other sports have it. Maybe it's implied in some language that I can't construe.

I spent too long today reading through it. Maybe it’s there, but I didn’t see it.

In this instance, I agree with Scott Boras. The facilities need to remain open for the players to do their work. Otherwise, the they will need additional spring training.

[h=2]Scott Boras Speaks On Players Staying In Spring Camp[/h]By TC Zencka | March 14, 2020 at 8:17am CDT

Baseball’s preeminent player agent is rarely shy about sharing his opinions, but in his latest comments, he’s making an extra effort to not offer anyone advice when it comes to COVID-19.

But he still has opinions. Boras believes players are best-suited staying in camp and working out in the semi-isolation of their squads, utilizing the healthcare options available therein, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Speaking further on the issue, Sherman quotes Boras as saying, “Players are evaluated daily and have immediate treatment access. This process over the month is proven effective versus the outside world as there are no reported cases [of coronavirus among major leaguers]. … The key to low probability of the virus is to be in isolated areas. But the key in treatment is early detection and treatment. And players are getting daily health care, they are getting daily diagnostics. They are in one of the best isolation situations when it comes to managing this outbreak.”

Many players evidently agree with Boras, as the Yankees, Padres and Tigers are among those teams that have mostly decided to stay put for now. MASN’s Mark Zuckerman reports that the Nationals are largely staying put, while the Reds and Cardinals are airing on the side of breaking up camp. Players across the board have been told that they are allowed to return to their homes should they so choose.

I agree. We'll soon find out though, because this has to be the primary issue on every player's mind. Since many players are still in camp, there's no real case to be made against paying them. I suspect too that that might be one of the reasons Boras (see 700hitter post above) is saying that camps should be kept open.

MLB has to err on the side of over-protection so, yes, I would guess kiss this season goodbye.

It's early days to be saying kiss the whole season goodbye.
