Everything you want to buy has a market value whether it be a house, car or anything for that matter it's dictated by the market. The same is to be said for baseball players you've got the Elite, the Good and the Mediocre as the different level of talent. We've seen the contract signed by Manny Machado and Bryce Harper which are a level lower than Mookie. Machado contract 10/300 mil with a 20 mil signing bonus total value 320 with opt out clause in 2023 and 6 team no trade clause. Harper contract 13/330 mil with a 20 mil signing bonus total value 350 mil no deferred money with full no trade clause.

There's no way Mookie was unreasonable he just wanted the money he deserve the market clearly showed that for his level of player the Red Sox offer was a bit slim side.

Machado's and Harper's contracts are both insane. An offer of $310 mil for 10 years was more than reasonable. A counter of $420 mil was completely unreasonable.

This was all about Mookie's ego.

Well, it also seemed that their only chance of extending him was if they first reset the tax penalties, which they could not do without trading Betts or other expensive and far less desirable contracts. So trading Betts was the smartest plan to reset, since no one was going to take Eovaldi, Sale or Price off their hands. (And they did try. I believe there were some Price/Wil Myers rumblings, which shows how far the Sox were willing to go.)

But the Dodgers were the only team willing to take Betts (and most of Price) and give up anything of value. My only problem with this unfortunately necessary trade was it did look better when the Sox got Brusdar Graterol...

By all accounts, Graterol projects to be a reliever, not a starter. It's too soon to know, but if that's the case, then the Sox are much better off with the package that they got.

So? Sox need relievers too. I liked the idea of having Graterol and Darrwinzon Hernandez and a lefty-righty duo to protect late leads.

Jeter Downs is a good prospect, but middle infield is not the Sox biggest need even in the short term future. Not only do they have prospects, but teams only need 2 middle infielders to pan out. You need a 12-13 pitchers...

What's Jeter Downs's trade value, I wonder.

It’s not a big need, but 2b isn’t exactly a strength right now.

I have never been happy with Mookie's stance that he was going to test free agency, presumably to get the most money that he can. That type of thinking just doesn't sit well with me. It's absolutely his right to do so, but I don't agree with. There are things that should be prioritized over money, especially when you're already going to make hundreds of millions either way.

Mookie not being your son's hero anymore has as much (or more) to do with Mookie than it does with the Sox.

Agreed. Still, if it was all about the money and he was going to test free agency no matter what, then somebody -- Boston or Betts -- was lying. That irks me, a Red Sox fan.

I won't say "he's dead to me", but he is now a ghoul. I fell asleep watching the end of the Sox game, and dreamt Mookie showed up in the front row with a black mask on to see how they were doing without him. So far, so great.

Re-signing Mookie was a pipe dream . We would never top the Dodger's offer . And we all love Boston, but let's face it, Hollywood has a lot more to offer . The glitz , the glamor , the dames and the fame . There is an allure that Boston cannot match . Mookie is rich and happy. Good for him. Thanks for the memories. Move on .

This is the best way to look at what happened.

I'm going to miss Mookie. He was the best all around Sox player I ever saw. (I missed Yaz in his prime, and Fred Lynn came close.)

Per baseballtradevalues.com, Jeter Downs has a surplus trade value of $21.7million. Graterol only has $14.3million.

Mookie off to a slow start with his new and permanent team, 2 for 16. Very early of course!

One of the very few bright spots for Boston today was Alex Verdugo...

We may never know if the virus pandemic affected his decision a bit...

There's no way Mookie was being unreasonable? Get off the high horse, he wanted more money than Mike Trout. I'm sorry but until you're an MVP candidate year in and year out like Trout is, you're not worth the money he was asking. He can't even produce back to back MVP type season. Not the player I want to throw ridiculous money at. Like I said, wait a few years and everyone will be saying their glad the Sox dodge that bullet.

Personally I think it's safe to assume it had *some* impact.

No, but people will use the pandemic as a cudgel to support whatever argument they are making.

I think it's reasonable to assume that the pandemic made the Dodgers offer look even better than it was.

I think it’s reasonable to assume that Mookie would have taken that offer if the Sox made it.

That's possible but doubtful.

... if they hadn't traded him, and made the same offer during this pandemic summer.

Of course if they hadn’t traded him, the decision to keep him in the face of a season with a strong possibility of no baseball would have looked a tad different...

Let me play devils advocate here for a minute.....but doesnt X have an opt out after like 3 years? What if he opts out, could Downs be a future SS?

He doesn’t have the range. It’s a 2b/COF profile.

Mookie also had slow starts some seasons with the Sox. Not surprising.

No doubt there will be folks checking the box scores daily and gleefully reporting any time Mookie goes hitless. That's just the way folks are .

And some will check out of curiosity to see how his career goes. When you are declared a superstar, it comes with the territory. And more so when that superstar left the team you root for.

I am so glad Mookie signed long term with the dodgers and not us!

We still have this year and next year of Pedroia!

Long term contracts can kill teams!

Best to invest in building a self sustaining farm system!

Yeah . You can avoid the ups and downs. The highs and lows . You can be consistently mediocre.

Graterol took the loss for the Dodgers last night too!
