It takes two to dance.....Betts turned us down.....there will be others...

I did the math, so I'm not as depressed: 13 for $380 reportedly includes this year ($20M), so if it's really an extension of 12 for $360, then that's at the same $30M annual rate the Sox offered (10 for $300). This would at least confirm what I suspected, and justify trading him; Mookie didn't want to stay in Boston.

He’s getting $27 mil this year. In new money, it’s 12 years $353 mil. Just under $30 mil per annum. The dodgers decided to give length over AAV and Betts decided to take the highest guarantee. This offer is 2 years and $53 mil richer than the Sox offer in terms of new money

If true , this at least will squelch the pipe dream about trading Mookie , and then re-signing him . That was never very realistic anyway .
Anyone who has been following the Red Sox for a few decades knew that the return of Mookie was not a possibility.

Dodgers Extend Mookie BettsBy Steve Adams | July 22, 2020 at 4:03pm CDT

The Dodgers and star outfielder Mookie Betts have reached an agreement on a 12-year, $365MM extension, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. The team announced the extension just minutes after Passan’s report. Betts is now signed through 2032.

The extension comes on top of Betts’ $27MM salary for the 2020 season (which is prorated to roughly $10MM given the shortened campaign). That makes the extension the largest deal ever in terms of new money promised to a player, topping Mike Trout’s previous 10-year, $360MM mark. Trout was already signed for two years and $66.5MM when that extension was agreed upon, so his $426.5MM total still exceeds Betts’ $392MM sum, but the $365MM mark is nonetheless a notable record in its own right.

So much for testing free agency. What a liar

To be fair, the circumstances changed drastically. For a while, it looked like Mookie was going to come to regret his decision to test free agency. He is fortunate that the Dodgers were willing to give him this kind of deal under these circumstances. He would have been stupid not to jump all over that.

Good for Mookie. He bet on himself and never wavered. In the end, it worked out for him.

I wish him the best with the Dodgers, but I am not the least bit sad that we traded him. In fact, I am thrilled that we did not sign him for anything close to the Dodgers' deal.

Dodgers will regret that deal

I am shocked that the Dodgers would offer that kind of deal when every other team is talking about cutting back. Sure, they have the money and can afford that kind of deal, but they are throwing money around needlessly.

Seriously, is there any other team that would have offered Mookie anything close to that kind of money this offseason? I think the Dodgers greatly outbid themselves. That contract is crazy in the best of times. It is beyond crazy in these uncertain times.

There's always a risk signing players to long term deals but one like this could be a blessing in the sky for the Dodger. Mookie is one of the best players in this era of baseball not to many are above his skills right now you've got Mike Trout that would be considered superior then it's Mookie.

I think the fact that the Dodgers have come so close , but have failed to win a championship in recent years makes them a little more hungry and aggressive in spending than they otherwise might be . No doubt Mookie increases their chances .

I have no idea how this deal is loaded but on average it is $30.4 mil per year. That will see the Dodgers paying big bucks for a great player now, but will he continue to be 5 years from now, 8 years from now? The risk is extremely high for the Dodgers and I am glad that the Sox did not make a similar offer, which would have hamstrung our organization going forward. As I remember, we did offer $30 mil for 10 years, which I thought was too rich given the Red Sox existing salary structure. That is not to denigrate Mookie who is a legitimate star player now. Mookie is a smallish guy whose game relies on his speed and physical health. Injuries and father time will cause his skills to deteriorate. It's just a matter of time. I'll give Bloom the benefit of the doubt, but I expect him to build a solid team that can compete year in and year out. It probably will take a few years, based on the need to recover from Dombrowski's moves

Seems like a reasonable deal. Will Mookie sign an extension will soon be a new story, of course.

I had a feeling this was gonna happen...

I appreciate all your comments. But as far as hamstringing the organization, I hope most people are referring to the luxury tax and reset rules, and not actual salaries. The Red Sox have always been able to splurge and afford what they thought were great players. They paid 30 mil per to Sale with a bad elbow, 30 mil to Price with a bad attitude, and offered 30 mil to Betts about to enter his prime. I certainly hope Bloom can rebuild a good team, but I also trust Boston will still try to lock up star players and fan favorites as part of the process.

I can't identify with musical chairs; I can't even dance.

Seriously who cares at this point about this player ? Guy obviously couldn’t wait to Bolt so good riddance to him .Havent given one rip about the guy the nano second he turned down 350 here .

Mookie Betts was a franchise player and the Red Sox didn't treat him like one. They rather give the money to unworthy players Chris Sale, 30 mil Price 16 mil, Pablo Sandoval 5 mil plus what about the money they gave Hanley Ramirez, Rusney Castillo to play AAA or Rick Porcello for one good season out of 5. Seem like the Red Sox like to overpay and reward mediocracy and fail to recognize and pay to keep elite talented players. The fail to keep the best baseball executive they ever hired by failing to recognize his brilliance only after consecutive disastrous seasons was his true value really acknowledged.

Curse of the Bambino part deux.

We didn't trade him because we didn't want him, we traded him because we needed to get under the luxury tax, and that was one of the easiest ways to do it. Yes, we are known for some pretty terrible contracts. Price, Sandoval, Carl Crawford, and Adrian Gonzalez all come to mind since Theo left for Chitown. But I don't think we had too many other options in this case

Well, the point is we all care about the team... which even the GM said wasn't going to be as good this season, about a minute after announcing the trade. Luckily, we only have to watch sixty games, instead of one hundred and sixty...two.

I'd have paid more than what the Dodgers paid, but who knows if he'd have taken $385M/13.

Yes, the back end might hurt, but to me, he may be worth $50M a year for a few years, and if we front loaded the deal, trading him later would be made easier.

$30M a year on the luxury tax is a lot for 13 years, but to me, he's the one guy worth it.

I was clinging to slim hopes he may come back, but it was never meant to be.

I hope we spend that $30M wisely x 13.

A baseball post. Good for you. I mean that sincerely.

I've been in the basement with Joe, no actually in my garage staining some outdoor wooden furniture we just bought for much of the afternoon.

I missed the news of the signing, until now.

WOW!

I'm glad he's in the NL, but I sure wish he played his prime in Boston.

You also missed the trade for Dylan Covey. I thought you would be all over that one.

I admit, I've been out of touch with baseball, and I'm not really all that pumped up about 60 games with no fans and a likely under .500 team.

I've actually been following basketball news more. (I'm a Bucks fan, so there is hope of a ring somewhere else, for me.)

I'm sure he's better than 5 guys on our 40 man roster, and I never heard of him.

LOL.

Very happy we aren't the ones that offered that contract.

I don't believe he will age well, and I don't believe he ever wanted to sign a long term contract with the Sox unless it was for something utterly absurd. His comments yesterday of "This is the only place I would have signed this long" (paraphrasing) might be paying lip-service to the Dodgers fans, but it backs up a suspicion I have had for a long time he didn't want to stay with the Sox long term.

Mookie has always been about the money. He'll have the Dodger fans bevelling it's all about them in no time.

Good luck to him. He was gonna get paid somewhere, I'm just glad it wasn't here.

Here in New England Fans more pissed off Tom Brady is gone then Mookie Betts.

Pandemic 51 million unemployed smart move to move fast on this by Betts, would have looked like a *******, if he was holding out.

Dodgers overpaid.

Tough Stadium especially at night for Power Numbers, lets see if ha can put them up like a Bellinger.

I never felt it was always about the money. He wound up signing with LA for the same AAV that the Sox offered.

I always felt it was about getting out of Boston. He never ordered his agents to make a deal to stay, like Bogaerts.

Mookie is now the hot ex-girlfriend... fun while it lasted, but there was always the sense he knew he could do better.
