If we are looking to reset the tax after 2019 (doubtful IMO), then how about signing 3-4 of these projected one year players?

$10M Dozier

$8M Herrera

$8M Sabathia (another lefty?)

$6M E Santana

Maybe Harvey, Ryu or Cody Allen would take a 1 year deal to try and reset their value.

If we are looking to reset after 2020 (more likely) what about these 2 year players?

$16M Morton or $12 M Gio Gonzalez?

Plus...

$8M Cody Allen and $5M Jesse Chavez?

Morton is in his mid 30's. I would only give him a 1 or 2 year deal.

No to Gio. He sucks.

No to Cody Allen unless he is half the price of Kimbo. Allen is just as big a heart attack as Kimbrel, and not nearly as good.

No to Chavez. He's a bag of garbage.

For my game thread buddies, man I am jonesing something fierce. Upwards of 180 games and then......nothing.

I'm not a game thread buddy, but I am jonesing something fierce as well. And we have 5 months to go before Opening Day!

Driving home from work yesterday, I was thinking dang, I don't have any baseball to watch tonight. :(

No point in trading Leon. He has virtually no value in a deal. Simplest thing is to non-tender him.

In fact, many people have described players as "more valuable to the Sox than they are in a trade," which I've heard to describe Holt and Swihart in particular. I never agree with this, but it might actually apply to Leon. As he is Sale's primary catcher, he has a value to the Sox. But to the rest of MLB, he is another all glove/no bat backup catcher, the likes of which can be had for minor league deals every off-season and can already be found in most organizations...

I may be in the minority, but I would keep Vazquez and Leon, and trade Swihart. Actually, I'd keep all three, but I don't see that happening.

Boring Sox off-season in store.

Unless something goes wrong in ST, the Sox have a full lineup returning, potentially no bench spots available, one open rotation spot and one bullpen spot.

I do think there will be some other moved

I'm okay with a boring offseason because we don't have the glaring needs.

I'd rather have boring than have Dombrowski pull of some kind of blockbuster where he trades Bogaerts, Devers, and whoever for a starting pitcher and then signs Machado.

Posted
Ryu got a QO. If he rejects it, he'll want years, on next contract. If were him I'd take the Offer, 17.9 not bad cash for 1 year.

Dombrowski's focus for this offseason should be to start locking up some of our young players for reasonable deals.

Good Luck, after winning WS, and a couple of them Boras guys. These Projected arbitration salaries, will be enough for these kids to ride it out, until Free Agency. I wouldn't sign, now myself, if I was Bogaerts, JBJ, or Betts.

Betts and Bogaerts, will be keeping an eye on this Off-Season for sure. With Machado and Harper hitting the Market. I'm sure any early signing, these core guys will want years. Then you have a Pedroia situation. Paying them, past their prime. Benni would be my target to sign on a reasonable deal, maybe JBJ. Devers still has question marks about him. Edited by OH FOY!

Bogaerts would be an idiot to take a deal now unless it was basically his free agent price. Betts and Bradley might want something very close, but only delayed free agency by a year or two max. Benintendi can and should be extended now...

Agree on Benni.

Upwards of 180 games and then....hockey!!

In fact, because its still early in Baseball Season, its Hockey till Final Game is over in the Stanley Cup. The NHL, play-offs for me are just as intense as MLB Play-offs. GO BRUINS!!!

I can't even somewhat get interested in NHL, I find it absurdly boring. I like football, but, but that ends in February and only has games a few times a week.. I used to be a big NBA fan, but the Warriors have made it way less interesting lol.

I absolutely miss not being able to sit down to a Sox game every evening.

I'm having a hard time watching football. I'm a Giants. Plus there just isn't enough defense in the game today to keep me at all interested.

I love me some Celtics but I can't stand the number of 3's that I see coming off the dribble in today's game.

Oh well at least this off season will be a bit shorter than the last few.

If you never played Hockey I could see it as boring. Without a Doubt the most physically demanding game, with Hard Contact. Grew up in different era on NBA, cannot watch it anymore. Rather watch College.

Hockey bores me because they keep trying to soften the final outcomes for games and make everyone happy.

First they had ties. They were necessary because it’s a low scoring game. But fans HATE ties.

Then they added overtime. But players hate overtime because they have to get beat up more, don’t get paid, and risk losing a point they already earned. And, a lot of times overtime ended in ties. And fans HATE ties.

So then they threw shootouts at the end of overtime, because who doesn’t like a gimmicky way to end a game? Then they had to add shout losses to the teams record, because the team already had this game end in a tie twice and didn’t deserve to lose the point they earned twice.

Now they have some sort oof 3 on 3 overtime? And if that ends in a tie I think the players just play Sorry! to determine the winner.

And the losing team gets a point for the “Sorry! loss” that appears in their record.

Just bring back the f***ing tie. (Did I mention fans HATE ties?)

I hear what you're saying. But before they made the changes, the incidence of ties was getting to be ridiculous, because the games were also lower scoring.

They need to get rid of the loser point, so that a team with more OT losses doesn't edge out a team with more wins for the playoff spot.

yes - or do what soccer does and make regulation wins worth 3 points

All these guys were projected by MLBTR to get 2 year deals, that's why I listed them.

Coday Allen does project to less than half Kimbrel's cost ($8M per to $17.5M per).

I could see us signing Morton, Allen and Pearce to two year deals and a reset of the tax for the 2021 season.

I only watch Red Sox and Bruins, while following the patriots.

Basketball is a joke played by clowns. The sport is waning in popularity and headed for a financial collapse.

That comment about basketball isn't even close to true. I think baseball has way more issues than basketball does. Those world series ratings are definitely concerning.

This is probably part of it. I never played it and don't really know anyone who played it. I played basketball and baseball through HS, and while I didn't play football, a lot of my close friends did and was always at HS/College/NFL games at a young age. Hockey was something if I got free tickets I'd go to, but didn't really find it interesting. There was legit one game I got free tickets in a suite, the Capitals were playing someone, me and my friends ended up not following the game after the first period and watched the Wizards/Bulls game on the TV they had in the suite, John Wall and Derrick Rose were having an epic battle. It was a weird atmosphere too. It was a 1-0 game and no one was really involved in the game at all and most people were more interested in NBA games. lol.

Yeah don't me get started on the NHL.

It should be wins or losses and none of this loser in overtime gets a points. It's like my God, you lost the game in overtime, here's a point for your effort to get into overtime.

Play like the nba and MLB. Play till there's a winner of the game and don't give out a point for losing the game, christ!

Feels like I'm watching kids play, oh here's a participation banner for making it to overtime.

Almost every year there is a team benefiting from these overtime loss points when they shouldn't.

2018 was a special season! You know the Spankees and the Astros will be spending to improve themselves, so moving forward it will not be easy with the Sox who are up against the luxury tax. I do not see the Sox spending $$$ for someone that was not part of the run unless they lose both Kimbrel and Kelly. Then a top bullpen arm will be needed. Bringing back Eovaldi would give the Sox the top staff in baseball assuming all is healthy. That would allow them to do what they did this post season using starters out of the pen. If Pedroia is healthy then there is not room to carry three catchers. I could live with any of the two. Bringing back Pearce to platoon with Mitchy Two Bags worked, and gives them a power bat off the bench and a DH when JD is in the outfield. Ant big dollars spent this off season will be extending Betts. It will be interesting to see what they do with Sale whose contract ends next year at this time.

In reality, the majority of the 25 man roster is already set, with DD having limited resources to replace key losses and to reduce risks. A subject that might be discussed is what Cora and the Sox should discuss with the players as avenues of improvement. I don't have a lot in mind at this point but would suggest a couple.

1. Dever should work on his weight and trim down a little. He has the body type that is broad to start with and at a listed 239 pounds and around 6 feet tall he was over what he should have been as an infielder. If he could trim down to 220 or 215 it could help his range and maybe avoid later joint issues.

2. Beni has nice swing mechanics but I notice far too many balls fouls off to his left and a lot of weakly hit balls to left field. I would like to see him develop more ability to hit to all fields. He is a young player and it would help his game.

3. E-Rod has been said to have great stuff but he continued throughout the year to nibble around the edges of the plate and often going deep into coulds and walking batters. The result was a 5 inning pitcher. If he truly has the stuff to be a No. 3 starter he needs to change his approach to get deeper into games.

4. JBJ is a great fielder with a marginal hitting capability. At his age and experience level, I believe it is what we see is what we will continue to get. He did contribute to the Sox in the PO's and that is enough.

I don't have other comments, thinking what the players do is already the best we can expect from them. I just would want these players to maintain a good workout plan and stay in shape for the upcoming season.
