my post wasnt about how we rank vs the other 29 teams. it is how effective i perceive them to be in the postseason against the elite teams.

I don't have a lot of confidence in our pen at this moment, but if our numbers show we're a top 6 pen, I'm not sure I have any more faith in other elite teams' pens either, if they have done worse than ours all year long. Even the Yankee pen is not unbeatable.

2018 Team Pen WAR Leaders

8.2 NYY

6.7 Astros

6.5 Padres

4.9 Rays

4.5 Brewers

4.4 A's

4.3 Sox

4.2 Giants

4.0 Mariners

We might end up facing the best two in MLB in the playoffs, but we're only 2-4 behind each, which if you look at 162 games it's just 1 out of 80 or 1 out of 40 difference in games won by the pen.

We are better in other areas than those teams.

We have just about the same pen as last year, but we have Brasier instead of Abad.

Last year, we had a 7.0 pen WAR (4th in MLB).

2017 to 2018 combined:

17.4 NYY

12.4 HOU

11.3 BOS

9.8 LAD

9.5 TBR

9.3 MIL

9.1 COL

8.3 PHI

7.7 TOR & CLE

Well, Ty did string together 5 or 6 scoreless innings!

And if that isn't enough to get him a nod for the Rolaids Reliever of the Yeat, then what is?

(I mean, besides resurrecting the Rolaids Reliever Award in the first place.)

Kinsler and Pedroia are very similar, although I suppose the girls find Kinsler better-looking...

Plus he hits home runs.

And you know what they say....

Kinsler is still a very good ballplayer IMO. And with some postseason experience and good postseason numbers.

Happy to have him.

I like having Kinsler on our team too.

Not only does he solidify 2B, he also makes our depth/bench guys stronger.

We can finally put to bed the debate of Benny the Boob vs. Desperate Dave

In 3 years, Dave has 3 consecutive Division championships (1st time ever for Boston), a World Championship and the best regular season record in franchise history 108 wins.

In 4 years, Benny had a Division Championship and a World Championship and 3 last place finishes (not done since the 1930's)

Decision to DD by a landslide. Case closed and put to rest permanently.

DD is what he is. A total badass of a GM. I was wrong on Eovaldi. I was very meh on Steve Pearce but those guys are huge reasons why we are World Series Champions. It goes without saying but DD is one of the best GMs in the game for a reason.

As soon as Dave signed David Price for the 2016 season, I purchased a weekday season ticket plan.

When Dave added Chris Sale for 2017, I renewed my weekday plan.

When he added JD for 2018, I upgraded to a full season plan.

Each year he added the best available player -- Price, Sale and JD. The Red Sox have always had oodles of money, and this guy doesn't dick around looking for hidden value players like Pablo and Hanley.

Dave Dombrowski was your 2018 MVP. Every single move was perfect. JD allowed the Sox to alter their approach and force teams to pitch to Betts. Sale and Price were key this year as well.

But his deadline dealings were absolutely perfect. He knew he’d need a righty starter vs NYY to get past them. He got Eovaldi, who was an oft injured power pitcher lacking in production who put together a good two months. He comes to Boston and turns into a folk hero and an ace while the actual ace dealt with arm issues. You likely see a game 5 in Boston vs NYY without Eovaldi. We couldn’t hit him. Turns out, nobody could

He sees the Sox big weakness in hitting LHP, so he goes out and gets journeyman Pearce. He creams NYY in the regular season and is a tone setter during the 4 game sweep that effectively sealed the division. In Game 1 of the ALDS, he drives in 4 runs by the 4th inning of a game that ends up being a nail biter yet the Sox win. He gets 2 hits and scored a run in the Game 4 clinched against NYY. Pearce became a Yankee killer and then rattles off a World Series for the ages while the big sluggers go cold. 3 bombs in the WS. Just epic.

The sox have a great club. They’ve got a lot of questions heading into 2019, but Sox fans should be comforted by the fact that their GM was perfect this year. Literally perfect

This is where we likely start hearing about how good DD is and has been but but but but. No buts for a change - not to take anything away from anyone else who has done this job but I do think that he has stood the test of time and that there really isn't a team in baseball that wouldn't feel pretty good knowing that he was their GM moving forward. From the cliff walkers to the he can't build the farm nor can he build a bullpeners - it has been idle talk. Let's just be happy we got him working for us. Let's see how we do going forward before we judge him in distant hindsight.

I'm a "cliff dweller" who has loved what DD has done. What's not to like?

The results are on the scoreboard.

Hats off to you, DD. Great job getting Price, Sale, JD, Eovaldi, Pearce, Brasier and more...

Great job keeping Devers and our young core together.

The going gets tougher, especially after next season, but this win make it all worthwhile.

You have fun on that cliff Moon. You have some friends there for sure to spend time with. It is tough every year to produce a winner but it appears that our GM might be up to the challenge,

Congrats to DD. Price and Pearce's WS assures his legacy.

My order of credit for current success:

1. Henry- £240 payroll. Supporting the core w Price and JD, when Hal went under the cap. The window of opportunity was taken.

2a. Theo- he drafted the killer B core.

2b. DD- many of his big moves have come good. I thot Price was a bad one.

4. Ben. Don't forget him, he made some awful moves but he played a decent part of the build up to this ring. He drafted / signed the prized chips which netted the best pitcher in MLB. He also kept the right core players when they were prospects.

To me, it's more about Henry's willingness to spend $240M+ for 3 or more years. (The taxes will be very high, even as we lose Pablito & Castillo's sunken costs.)

If he does, I have faith we can remain contenders after 2020. (BTW, unlike other cliff-dwellers, my date was always after 2020, unless we won a ring or two and Henry decides to reset the tax for 2020.)

I have also said I like what DD did and am willing to accept a down year or two in exchange for a ring or two more.

We got the ring, so here we are.

Ben drafted one of the killer B core: Beni. He drafted Kopech and signed Moncada who helped us get Sale. He signed Devers.

Moon - I understand totally how much you have enjoyed this year and how much you have liked Dombrowski's moves and how much of the future you were willing to sacrifice for a ring or two. I get all of that. The problem I am having with all cliff dwellers whoever they may be, there is always an addendum to your praise. It of course is ok and possibly correct but I choose to see the future beyond 2020 or whatever as still being potentially bright if current ownership remains in place and if Dombrowski likes it here. He has been and is as good as there is in the game and I have great faith that he can build successful teams under any circumstance.

It's weird to me that the first thing somebody wants to do after seeing their team win a WS is immediately try and bring up an old argument so they can act all superior, but each to their own.

Personally, I think it's awesome that we have a GM who has made so many brilliant decisions and given us sustained success. I am also very thankful for the previous one who gave us a WS and who's players like Kelly and Porcello were so instrumental to this unbelievable season.

It's a good time to be a Sox fan.

I hope you are right about beyond 2020, and for the record, I never said it would be impossible to avoid a cliff or deep valley.

One good sign has been with DD's big signings. The going rate of MLB success with large and long contracts is 50%, at best. DD has done well with the Price & JD signings, at least so far.

Everyone knows my feelings about the Chris Freakin' Sale deal I dreamed of doe several years.

Most know I hated the Kimbrel trade and disliked the Pom trades, not because I disliked the players we got, but because we gave up too much.

There's no caveat. We all know DD went all out to get us a ring, and it's been worth it to me. I don't think my concerns over 2021 and beyond are unfounded, misplaced or exaggerated, but that's a long way away from right now. I'm enjoying the moment and feel really good about 2019, as well.

You are right! It isn't about being superior though. I don't care about that. Moon lays over me with his knowledge of these types of issues. I am guilty of looking ahead I guess and maybe not enjoying the moment like I should. When the last game is over, you go to work on the next season. That is pretty much me and I have total faith that our franchise is in good hands. But once again you are right.

Seriously Hitch - Have I said that to you one time this year? lol

Enjoy the moment. I think that we all have one big thing in common - We love this team.

That's for sure!

We may have different ways of showing the love, different areas of the game we love more, but we are all big Sox fans, through and through.

Oh my comment wasn't aimed at you, apologies if you thought that.

As you say, this is a time of celebration. I can't quite believe how good we've been this year. I thought the wheels had to come off at some point. I didn't think we could be THIS good THIS long. It feels surreal.

And one cherry we should never ever forget, Machado ended on his knees for the last out looking up at the Sox celebrating.

It should have been aimed at me. It is odd how when the last game was coming to its end, I actually kept hoping any ball in the infield would be hit at Devers. I was as happy for that kid as I was for anybody. We are going to suffer a letdown soon with no Sox to follow.

Yeah it's going to be weird not having games to watch. We will have Domborski's winter moves to argue about into the dark nights soon, however. Ha!

And yeah,so many people on this team I'm so happy for. Just so pumped for everyone involved.
