I’m sure he’ll appeal. I assume they’re going off the fact that he was the aggressor and then gestured for him to continue.

And Austin will get two because he was the "victim". Joe Torre in action. It won't surprise anyone.

Austin gets 5. Yankees once again get the lesser penalty under Chief Justice Torre. They always do.

Slight revision to my prediction; after appeal, Kelly 5 games, Austin 3 (was 5 and 2).

A six-game suspension for a reliever who has appeared in only five games is less than a five-game suspension for a position player who has appeared in 10 games.

There you go - Austin was found to be the bigger culprit.

Indeed.

According to MLB.com, "Austin has received a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for charging the mound and fighting."

BOSTON -- Major League Baseball wasted no time issuing discipline from Wednesday's Red Sox-Yankees melee, handing a six-game suspension to Boston righty Joe Kelly and a five-game suspension to New York infielder Christopher Austin. Both players have appealed their suspensions, meaning they are available for Thursday's rubber match of the three-game

No mention of the slide, although more information might be forthcoming.

Kelly is the aggressor? is that what they label you for protecting a teammate? Is Austin going to walk free? Whoever was pick to even it is an aggressor?

We may never get the full story. Personally I suspect that if MLB thought the slide was A-OK and that the Red Sox therefore overreacted, they would have gone a little lighter on Austin. But maybe I'm a touch cynical.

Absolutely Kelly was the aggressor. Anyone who watched the game clearly saw Kelly charge home plate and attack Austin.

Joe Kelly "charged" Tyler Austin with a 97.7 mph fastball. Austin charged the mound without a weapon.

In my jurisdiction a baseball could be considered a deadly weapon as used.

So could spikes used with intent.

Did Yankee pimp, Joe Torre levy the penalties.

Nobody is mentioning the bat slam to the ground. That alone is cause for ejection and fine. Too bad the bat didn't splinter and bounce back in his eye.

What blows my mind during these things is how much a player has to lose. You get upset about something, slide in with spikes up on someone, take that persons knee out and his career is done. You might have just caused that person and their family millions of dollars. Maybe the difference between a comfortable life, and that person hoping he gets another fairly good price selling a car before the month is out.

Just ask the family of Tony Conigliaro.

No brawl or retaliation was involved in that case -- just an errant pitch.

The chances that an errant pitch will cause serious injury increase when a pitcher deliberately throws at a batter instead of at the plate.

Joe Kelly is not known for his pinpoint control.

I have more respect for Kelly after this than I ever had.

I only wish the radr gun hit 100 on the pitch.

98 mph not too shabby tho

I absolutely agree with your concern for the health of the players.

It's unfortunate that these 'retribution' incidents are part of the game.

No. I'm glad Kelly was on the mound.

1) He throws the hardest

2) We won't miss him all that much

My point was one plunk at 98 mph was not really enough.

Spikes up has to be deterred.

the best part?

after Kelly plunked him there was no closeup shot of Brock Holt yelling over to the Yankees "it's not me - it's them".

brock understands the game of baseball.

Joe Kelly is my new favorite Sox player.

also, nice job by Porcello protecting hanram by hitting giancarlo.

Porcello can handle himself...we've seen that somewhere haven't we? :)

I loved that, too. It might have ended up costing him a perfect game, but he did what he needed to do.

Oh I needed that to start my day!!!!!

I've always tried to listen and hear what the wife's last name is, but the guards holler with laughter and drown it out.
