How much courage does it take to plunk a batter in the back with a 97.7 mph fastball?

Granted, it takes some arm strength.

Errrr.... he invited an angry dude who is bigger than him and who was charging at him to bring it on, and in one more second he had the dude on his hands and knees without even having to do a takedown maneuver. That was slicker and quicker than a preacher's prick.

You don't want to fight the Yankees. We have some bruisers

You can't be serious. What part of "it's not the size of the dog that's in the fight, it's the size of the fight that's in the dog" do you not understand? Looks to me by the way they some of the "bruisers" behaved in this one that I would take Joe Kelly over any one of your big boys.

Wow Harmony - How much courage does it take to spike a guy at second base who is half your size? It's the way the game has been played since it was created. Plus - that is Kelly's change up.

I'm against plunking hitters, but I also think that slide was intended to injure Holt. Austin and his manager called it a good hard slide and it would appear MLB (the umps) will agree. It was all Holt's fault for actually putting his foot/feet on 2b to get the runner out on a force play. I believe Machado did something exactly like that last year to basically end Pedroia's season if not his career.

It isn't so much about hitting guys or fighting in general it's about being a team made up of guys who support each other. No more - "It wasn't me" crap I guess. I hope that Joe Kelly showed people what I guess he is actually made of last night. He didn't run! I'm 100% in.

I agree with Remy on this one - I don't like the rule. I was a second baseman and had to learn the hard way to get the hell out of the way. I would never defend a spikes up slide where that lead foot is not moving to the bag in any way. I don't know if Austin was literally trying to spike him or not but he was trying to break up a double play. I think that the rule and the way I guess that it is interpreted is going to lead to more slides like this. If you are a second baseman or a ss and you don't have to get off the bag, that is a pretty good deal.

Kelly did the right thing by hitting Austin and when he did it, his next AB. That’s when you do it, not two games later. Good thing to see that the team learned this last year. Thanks Pedroia. Meanwhile, we’ll see if this clown Austin learns anything from this experience of being a f***ing punk, spiking our SS covering 2B, getting plunked for doing it, charging the mound and getting punched in the face at least twice by Kelly and leaving with a busted lip. Yanks virtually had the game won from the 1st Inning, why be an ******* and try to hurt someone just for doing their job? f*** these clowns.

I can't improve on the first two posts in this thread. I agree completely.

I still and will always believe that "It's not me, it's them" led to the fracture in the clubhouse that Bogarts alluded to during the preseason.

I totally agree. Nice touch with the "change-up" comment.

Barnes and Sale last year, Kelly this year! Good job by the pitching staff protecting the Sox. Hopefully the position players will get in the mix tonight when the punk bitches from the Bronx retaliate. Everyone should watch out for Sanchez because he has the rep from last year of getting sucker pitches in while staying outside the scrum.

Should be an interesting summer!

Hopefully, the Yankees don't continue to suck. That would take all of the fun out of it.

No it wouldn't. As I say in my signature, they could go 0-162 and it still wouldn't be enough (now THAT would be fun).

It'd be nice if the Yankees finished last in the division, but we know that's not going to happen.

I'll settle for knocking them out of the playoffs in the last series of the season.

That's my idea of fun!

Here's a nice difference from last season:

Grand Slams:

2017 (166 games, including the postseason) - 0

2018 (11 games) - 3

That's an amazing stat.

This. I really felt that whole scenario was the 'beginning of the end' so to speak, even though it was early in the season.

Like Remy, I hate the rule, but going in spikes up was unnecessary. Then puffing out your chest and acting like a punk made me wish Holt would have gone all Rougned Odor on him - you came in spikes up jackass, of course the guy covering second is going to bust on you a little bit. Glad he got plunked. Sox Yanks is so much fun.

The rule is a disaster and should be changed back to original. It protects nobody. In fact it is more dangerous. We have fielders feeling comfortable around the bag and not even moving to protect themselves in many cases. A play comes that forces them to protect themselves and they have forgotten how to do it. Worse, we are going to start to see fielders that never learned how. Just stop this madness. It protects nobody.

This fight video between Yanks and Sox minor leaguers surfaced after last night's fight, never saw it before but was pretty entertaining.

My favorite part is the frogsplash tackle 12 seconds in

My bad. It was Austin’s 2nd AB after his spikes-up slide. Still. You plunk him before the game is over, if possible. Great job Joe Kelly!

Ryan Dempster will always be the gold standard for plunking someone, but I agree that Kelly did the right thing and in a timely manner.

I liked the rule - or at least the concept of it - at first but now I'm coming around to not liking it. The change was designed to prevent injuries but instead it seems to sometimes create a different injury.

My "solution" FWIW would be to use a double-base much like the one used at 1B in softball only with the "new" part extending directly toward CF. The fielder would be entitled to any part of the double base and the runner responsible for any contact.

(Feel free to trash this idea. Like everyone, my having an idea it doesn't make it a good one!) :D

I like the additional base at 1b. At 2b, it seems like it'll be in the way whenever a fielder is trying to turn two or even just fielding a ball in play.

The review found nothing illegal in Tyler Austin's slide in which his foot barely left the ground in a routine attempt to break up a double play in the heat of the moment with no teammates in close proximity.

I suspect Joe Kelley's pitch -- a 97.7 mph four-seam fastball, according to MLB.com -- was more deliberate as the right-hander stood 60 feet from his target surrounded by his Red Sox teammates.

Yeah. And don't leave out the 30,000 fans "surrounding" Kelly either! And yet Austin got to the mound before any of the 30,000+!

I don't need a "review" to tell me a cheap shot when I see it, whether it's Austin or Machado.

Actually, MLB did not rule anything on the slide. Since Holt made no attempt to complete the DP, they said it was not reviewable. Telling was what the ump said to Cora, "my advice is next time have him throw the ball" or words to that effect (the my advice was definitely there). Tells me it would have been ruled illegal had a throw attempt been made. MLB network played the audio after the inning.

Brock Holt overreacted to Tyler Austin's slide and Austin overreacted to to Holt's overreaction. It all went downhill from there.

Still, plunking a batter with a 97.7 mph fastball is no courageous feat regardless of the unwritten rules.
