And a middle infielder can expect a runner approaching second base to try to break up a potential double play.

Please - explain to me how they are supposed to do that. Spikes up is never ok. Please just explain how you think runners are now supposed to be able to break up a double play and still play within the current rules of the game.

Call me a homer but this is one case where "the eye test" is clearly important. There are no stats that support the idea that Austin's slide was anything but a deliberate attempt to interfere ( in this case spike ) with Holt.

I've seen the replay 10 or so times from a variety of angles. From the back or from the front camera views parallel to the runner both show ( in slow motion ) Austin lifting his leg and moving toward Holt's leg.

I don't know what was reviewed beyond weather the Sox were attempting the DP.

The umps or MLB in New York f***ed this one up.

I'd like to see Austin pull that s*** with Psycho Machollo. You know. Someone close to his size and just as f***ed in the head.

Holt demonstrated a lot of self control.

correcto!

A takeout slide is or was a lot different then going in to any base spikes up. If the rule allows for a baserunner to go across the bag spikes up no matter where he is or where the second baseman is located it is a s***** rule. It does happen for sure but it isn't supposed to. I will say though that a real takeout slide as in body to body contact can cripple a player just as easily. I'm not familiar with anyone anywhere who teaches sliding which all coaches do who teaches spikes up at any player. Those spikes that were showing when he slid are supposed to hit the goddamned bag. Maybe the base is to big a target for that moron if he thinks that his slide wasn't dirty. As much as people on both sides want to whine about what happened last night there has to be some sort of retaliation for that s***. Now if he is trying a hook slide , which he wasn't, different story. A hook slide would have had that lead leg a lot closer to the mound and a lot farther away from Holt. Anyone who thinks that slide was ok is a moron. I'm on a rant but it does piss me off. Now MVP - you know that I'm not talking about you because you get it.

I consider Joe Kelly's plunking of Tyler Austin to be vigilante justice.

The MLB office may have examined Austin's slide more closely if the brawl had been avoided.

I should have written attempted review because the umpires got as far as putting on the headphones. Mea culpa. At any rate, to date we have no official finding whether slide was legal or illegal.

Is the second baseman fair game for abuse if he fails to make a throw? Is anything legal by the runner if the infielder does not make the throw?

I joined this discussion because I frown upon a pitcher deliberately hitting a batter with a baseball at high speed. On some level I regret being drawn into the discussion regarding Tyler Austin's slide.

The sad thing is that Austin's likely suspension may reference only his charging of the mound and subsequent behavior. If Joe Kelly had not beaned Austin, MLB could have focused on the propriety of Austin's slide ... or not.

I hope this healthy discussion left no one with bad feelings.

You have stomped on my personal sense of self worth. I will never be the same. I hope that you can live with that.

Actually that is an intelligent comment. But if that type of slide occurs in any baseball game in ml baseball there will be some sort of retaliation. Even the mariners would have done something. Even if it was just to make faces at the opponent. that way no one gets hurt.

Are you really so dense as to ask this question?

Maybe it's just condescension?

Spud - It is possible I guess that he is an intelligent person who really knows nothing about how the game is actually played. Probably I will told soon about how he played college ball or maybe even in the minors. I won't be impressed. lol

I never played baseball beyond Little League and frequently endure the condescension of those who did.:)

harmony - I'm kidding with you!. If I knew you I think based on your writing I would like you. Don't take anything I ever say personally. this has been wonderful for me because it has been a debate over something I really think I know something about. I tolerate all of the talk about statistics and analytics and I do try to comment on a few things but for me this is what it is all about. Real baseball and incredible nuances. I love this - passion - you cannot imagine how it affects me to not be actively involved in something that meant so much to me for so long. I'm retired now and for me I'm not sure I like it.

your honest - I'm not sure everybody here would say what you said. I hope that your ll coach taught you how to slide into a base. lol

Such retaliation has been part of the game forever, as you know. The general consensus among players who have spoken on the subject seems to be that if you hit the guy in the back it's 'the right way'. Even Kimmi advocates this, I think.

I am absolutely in with this.

Joe Kelly is the man.

Brock Holt overreacted to Tyler Austin's slide and Austin overreacted to to Holt's overreaction. It all went downhill from there.

Still, plunking a batter with a 97.7 mph fastball is no courageous feat regardless of the unwritten rules.

I've always respected you, harmony, but I have to say this is bull crap.

Holt reacted appropriately.

Kelly's only mistake was to not throw it at 100 mph.

Vaz saw what was coming after Austin threw down his bat, and he was slow to protect his pitcher.

Not with spikes up and aimed at your planted leg.

Austin is the one who acted like a psycho on 2 different occasions last night. There was absolutely no reason to deliberately go after Holt's leg on a play that wasn't going to be turned for a DP, and then he didn't like Holt asking him WTF. When he got hit by the pitch he atd like a psycho smashing his bat and then charging the mound. i wish that the bat had splintered and come up and hit him in the face. That would have been amusing.

Brock Holt called it a bad slide, but afterward said: "I probably said something I shouldn’t have to start the whole thing, so I’m sorry for that."

Of course you are. You know the score in these situations.

I assume that you thought that the slide was "dirty"?

Yeah I am sure the game would have been better served if Holt had pulled a Bible out of his pocket and prayed with Austin.

Give us a f***ing break.

This is not a case where all of us Sox fans are being homers. Most of us would have called out a Sox player for doing what Austin did.

which means what exactly that Austin's leg had to move farther away form second base to get to him? rules can be confusing.

Let's drop it.

No need to encourage a troll.

At least Tyler Austin's butt went directly over second base, unlike Mookie Betts' butt when Betts broke up a double play (and forced an error) with a hard slide after being out by two strides (unlike Austin):

At :48 of the recap or :54 of Hanigan scores on an error.

Austin is a dirty player with a temper problem. There was no reason to deliberately go for Holt's leg in that instance, because it wasn't a DP attempt. He's a bush leaguer all the way.
